So chilling in the garden today with dp and fil, and then fil asks if we like haggis, goes to the kitchen and gets a packet of 4 haggis slices. I say yes, but unsure what hes planning with these slices straight from the fridge.

And he eats it straight out of the packet?? Dp agreed that they were edible and had a slice, and they both though i was strange for passing on the offer for not eating raw haggis??

I know that technically the process of making the haggis boils it so it is theoretically 'cooked' but i dont think its ok to eat straight out of the packet like that without grilling or frying??

Am i the weird one or ainbu by saying this is not how you eat haggis?

They also thought that this was an appropriate way to eat black pudding as well, which is even worse due to the blood imo.

For full disclosure, im scottish, dp and fil are not haha

The ones we had were MacSween.

From.the link:
5°C. Once opened, keep refrigerated and consume within 2 days and by date shown. Suitable for freezing. Freeze by date mark shown and use within one month. Defrost and use within 24 hours. Once defrosted, cook thoroughly

Yeah, those slices are in the raw meat section next to the sausages and bacon in my aldi. Definitely need cooking!

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 30/05/2021 22:42

I think people are confusing sliced haggis/black pudding with sliced ham/corned beef etc from the deli counter... sliced haggis/black pudding is about a centimetre thick & definitely needs cooking before putting anywhere near your mouth.

steff13 · 30/05/2021 22:47

It says to make sure it's heated thoroughly before consuming, so i wouldn't eat it without cooking.

FloraFox · 30/05/2021 23:03

It’s not just about it being already cooked. Sliced deli meats have different, stricter handling requirements because they will be eaten without being cooked. Haggis and black pudding definitely need to be cooked.

This on Asda website..

Also, if anything, sliced haggis would need to be cooked even moreso. More surface area gives more space for bacteria to grow.

mrsbyers · 30/05/2021 23:11

I’ve seen black pudding served from ‘raw’ as bar snacks in NE , not for me cooked raw or with a cherry on top

fearfulfran · 31/05/2021 00:09

This is definitely not okay. It's clearly raw!

Hankunamatata · 31/05/2021 00:26

Boak. It's like my dad who eats raw black pudding

Justbeenjabbed · 31/05/2021 00:38

How does it not taste disgusting? Confused

Also... are you sure you haven’t been pranked OP?! As you say, it’s an incredibly random thing to just get and eat!

Yeah are you sure it's not a prank? It's not a great idea to eat rawnl offal.
ChatterMonkey · 31/05/2021 07:41

@mrsbyers its funny you mention that youve seen it in the NE, as thats where we are. So maybe it is a thing here.

Defo not a prank, i handled the packet before they had a slice, they were definitely uncooked. And then were eaten in front of me.

But that's not the product
cupsofcoffee · 31/05/2021 08:25

The product you linked to says they need to be cooked.

Hopefully they've not given themselves horrific food poisoning from eating raw lamb 🤢

funnylittlefloozie · 31/05/2021 08:29

Haggis is delicious, but it ALWAYS needs to be cooked. Always. As does black pudding.

I've seen people eating raw black pudding in Staffordshire as well...I gave it a wide berth. I love black pudding but its not something to be eaten raw in my book.

RaspberryCoulis · 31/05/2021 08:32

No it needs to be cooked. (I'm Scottish too)

Cold haggis sounds gross, the fat would be all sticky and yukky. I think you play the trump card here of "I am Scottish I know what I'm talking about" in this case.
