AIBU to not wee in the hotel kettle?

Summary of events:

  • In hotel room with new(ish) partner.
  • Go to make myself a cup of tea, ask if he wants one.
  • His eyes widen and he yelps 'No! Don't use that! People wee in them!'
  • I have never heard this and say something along the lines of 'What? Why would anyone wee in the kettle? There is an ensuite.'
  • He says that everyone knows you should never use the kettle in your hotel room because people wee in them 'and worse'.
  • I tell him I'm going to take my chances and make a cup of tea (although I boil it out once first to be on the safe side).
  • He looks repulsed and says 'I can't believe you're doing that, that's disgusting, I didn't think you were like that' (basically how I'd expect him to react if I actually did a wee (or 'worse') in the hotel kettle myself.
  • We go out later for an after-dinner walk and he points at a dog poo and says 'look, there's your dessert.'
  • We are getting ready for bed and he picks up kettle and asks me if I want a cup of wee to take to bed.

So, question, in case you haven't guessed: is weeing into the hotel kettle 'a thing' (in which case IABU for making a cup of tea in what is essentially a toilet) or is my partner being weirdly OTT about this? Girls group chat theories have so far ranged from he's an extreme germophobe (red flag) to he's testing my reaction because he's 'into' poo and wee related 'activities' (also a red flag) to he wees in hotel kettles himself (also a red flag).

The only non-red flag is that he's right and people are weeing into their hotel kettles left right and centre which would be a a green flag for him but a red flag for the rest of society. I'm not really sure what outcome I'm hoping for here. Help me out?

I have just Googled pissing in a hotel kettle...

Like various pp’s, it’s the cups not the kettle you need to worry about. As a chambermaid in three hotels, I’ve defo ‘cleaned’ the cups with a used towel picked up from the bathroom floor. Boil the pissy kettle first and pour the boiling water over the cup to disinfectant. Then you’ll be fine Grin

I always pack my own travel kettle (just in case)

PandemicPalava · 30/05/2021 21:16

I've heard this too. We once found poo in a kettle but it was in keeping with the state of the rest of the room so not a common occurrence. I don't think it's common to find wee

DdraigGoch · 30/05/2021 21:21

I suppose that it would depend on the class of the establishment. I am aware that a member of staff at Pontins once found (when cleaning rooms between guests) that someone had defecate in one. So it's certainly not an unheard of event.

L0bstersLass · 30/05/2021 21:21

My friend is an ex hotel inspector. She told me about this and she would never use a hotel room kettle.

Mooloolabababy · 30/05/2021 21:27

I've heard of this but definitely never done it! I always rinse the kettle a couple of times, boil the water, pour it away and then boil it again to make my first cuppa

cardibach · 30/05/2021 21:29

@Giantrooster

Think I've seen it mentioned on QI or something, people didn't believe it.

It's well know you shouldn't touch the remote though Grin.

What happens if you do? Only, I always do, and so do all the people I’ve ever shared a room with. We don’t seem to have suffered any ill effects...
ShamrockHillz · 30/05/2021 21:30

I’ve heard of this but thought it was just an urban myth. I do, however, fill hotel room kettles up to max and boil and throw a couple of times before using them. That’s just me being a germaphobe though!

Giantrooster · 30/05/2021 21:31

@cardibach
Wank fingers Grin.

cardibach · 30/05/2021 21:34

I don’t ask why not, @Giantrooster. I pointed out it had never made me or anyone I know ill...

ScottishNewbie · 30/05/2021 21:35

Obviously, SOME kettles probably have wee or other bodily fluids in them....
You've probably also eaten at a restaurant where the kitchen staff haven't washed their hands/sneezed into/spat into your food.
I think we come into contact with a lot more than we realise.
I try to go along my merry way and not think about it too much. Although will be boiling the kettle in hotel rooms once now and tipping away before using lol.

Feather12 · 30/05/2021 21:36

What kind of hotels is he used to? The kettles are always DRY. Someone is actually drying the inside of the kettles in the type of establishment I frequent. I think they would have noticed if they were cleaning wee from the inside. I would dump him for the shit hotels he clearly stays in, you deserve better OP.

NativityDreaming · 30/05/2021 21:36

He sounds unhinged. His comments to you after you used the kettle are red flags, he is not a nice man.

Giantrooster · 30/05/2021 21:36

@cardibach

I don’t ask why not, *@Giantrooster*. I pointed out it had never made me or anyone I know ill...

Fair enough, guess I'm more squeamish Wink.

ArnoldJudasRimmer · 30/05/2021 21:38

His comments are bizarre. Confused

InTheMiddle23 · 30/05/2021 21:42

You couldn't pay me to use a hotel kettle, and certainly not a glass or cup/mug.

spacewitch99 · 30/05/2021 21:44

This was in an episode of Inside No 9.....
Does he believe everything he sees or hears on TV!?

MiddleClassMother · 30/05/2021 21:46

I think your DP is unhinged! I've made tea in a hotel kettle, not used it as a toilet...

JudgeJ · 30/05/2021 21:50

Never weed in one but I have boiled eggs in one!

RedRiverShore · 30/05/2021 21:50

I'm sure it does happen, it's like people pooing in changing rooms which I'm sure happens also. Some people are revolting.

JudgeJ · 30/05/2021 21:53

@Peppapeg

I've heard of this before, but thank goodness never seen it or done it myself! Does he play rugby or is he ex forces by any chance?
I have heard of a rose bowl being used under the table during a very tedious Mess dinner!
BanginChoons · 30/05/2021 21:57

The dog poo comment is a red flag. So unnecessary.

TellerTuesday · 30/05/2021 21:59

I look after a holiday cottage with 2 bathrooms. I was once dusting the window ledge, pushed a vase to the left and felt a splash on my hand... yeah full of piss. People are fucking disgusting!!
