Using God/Christ in negative threads

Tigertalk · 30/05/2021 09:00

Hi all, I’m a long time mumsnetter but finding it hard to read constant threads (as a Christian) that use phrases starting with ‘ for G*d’s sake ( insert some nasty phrase about something) . We don’t accept racist or phobic language so why is it okay to use God, Jesus, Christ etc in these contexts? It’s really uncomfortable to read constantly 🙁

Religious people do love policing everyone else’s thought, speech and behaviour.

I don't think that kind of insulting generalisation is very helpful. I'm as athiest as they come but know plenty of religious people and none of them police my thoughts or speech.

phoenixrosehere · 30/05/2021 09:42

Nobody uses Mohammed, Allah or Buddha as swear words. It would be considered quite offensive to do so.

The U.K. isn’t a Muslim country and from what I’ve seen most of the people who use the words that OP is talking about are usually Christian or would consider themselves Christian.

ShutUpAlex · 30/05/2021 09:43

What about during sex?? Is that still considered negative?

seashells11 · 30/05/2021 09:43

@ThreeKneeRepeater

The worst one is Jesus Christ with the word ‘fucking’ inserted in the middle. Really offensive imo.
I absolutely hate that. I find it deeply offensive. No other religion seems to get the same blasphemy.
skirk64 · 30/05/2021 09:43

We've been a predominantly Christian nation for over a millennium so terms used which reference God or Jesus have entered standard usage in a way that terms referring to other religions haven't.

If you banned "for God's sake" you would have to ban an awful of a lot of terms too. Damn, blimey, Jeeeeeez, bloody hell, Christ alive, Christ on a bike, bloomin' 'eck, the shit on Satan's shoe, heavens above. And many others. You couldn't call your partner an angel. You couldn't "go the extra mile" or "give up the ghost". Someone couldn't be "a wolf in sheep's clothing" or "a fly in the ointment".

@Ugzbugz

Saul in was struck blind on the road to Damascus in order to show him the error of his ways. His sight was returned when he was converted (to the truth). 'blind' is not seeing or telling the truth. It became used when making mistakes.
'Swear blind' etc came from that.

We are trying to get our GC to stop saying it. But it's slightly better than my FFS.

Friendofdennis · 30/05/2021 09:45

I agree with you that using Jesus or Christ as an expletive is horrible That is because he is important to me. But for those for whom he is just a name , we can’t expect them to police their words.

TO12T39FRQ · 30/05/2021 09:45

How do you navigate daily life being so offended, dying inside, cringing and getting upset over normal language? Language evolves....nowt much ya can do about it

TO12T39FRQ · 30/05/2021 09:47

We are supposed to believe someone was ‘struck blind’ on a random road then once he started thinking another way it was restored?!???

Macncheeseballs · 30/05/2021 09:48

Shutupalex, yes! Maybe that's what Mary said when she was being impregnated by the Holy spirit!

BagORats · 30/05/2021 09:49

I had no idea about blimey, how interesting. My grandmother never liked us to say bloody - from what I've googled this isn't necessarily a religious expletive so why would this be objectionable?

Macncheeseballs · 30/05/2021 09:49

Would 'fucking hell' offend satanists?

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 30/05/2021 09:50

I reported someone for saying 'Christ on a bike' once because I find that really offensive. No response from Mumsnet.

UhtredRagnarson · 30/05/2021 09:50

It’s not comparable to racism or any of the phobias as those are directed at people. The gods or Christ are not people. If it was directed at Christians, as in “fucking Christians/bible bashers/god botherers” then you’d have a (loose) point. But any of the gods and Jesus Christ are totally unaffected by their names being used in this way.

TO12T39FRQ · 30/05/2021 09:51

Why is Christ on a bike offensive?? Why?

CPsRus · 30/05/2021 09:51

Christians didn’t respect the cultures and religions that came before them - stealing and repressing the holy days and practices. Oh and the centuries of cruelty and oppression. The forced adoptions, the burning of witches, the slaughter of muslims, of heretics etc. Now it is all benevolent bake sales and happy clappy masking this past I am not supposed to offend them? Sod that!

Because cycling is an outing hobby?!

Riddo · 30/05/2021 09:52

I find "for God's sake" offensive but accept that it is in everyday use. However in my home I think I have the right to object and have on occasion asked people (particularly DC's friends) to try to avoid saying it and I've explained why I find it offensive. Jesus f***g Christ is much more offensive IMO.

sailmeaway · 30/05/2021 09:53

I have a friend who gets upset at 'blasphemy' too but she reckons comes judgement day we'll all be sorry... I'm careful how i speak around her but the reality is there are many gods and too many words to tiptoe around if we went down the path of trying not to insult everyone accidentally all the time...

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/05/2021 09:53

No response from Mumsnet.

They probably couldn’t type for laughing.

UhtredRagnarson · 30/05/2021 09:53

When I think of some of the atrocities that were carried out “in the name of God” I feel quite comfortable using “oh my God” regularly.
