Cup of tea

Just came back from a lovely winter walk with my partner and settled down to watch some Netflix with lunch. After we finished lunch I said I'm just going to get some water would you like some? He responded with 'no but I would like a cup of tea pls'
AIBU that I didn't make a cup of tea for him? I would usually do this if he asked, and he would for me also, but I was freezing cold and
literally just wanted to grab a quick glass of water and get back to watching our TV show..

If I was freezing cold, I’d much rather a cup of tea than a cold glass of water. But yeah, it’s pretty cheeky to request an involved drink when you’ve offered a simple one. It’s like when I offer tea and people ask for coffee instead, it’s totally not unreasonable of them but making fresh coffee is much more of a ball-ache.

HazeyJaneII · 30/05/2021 07:46

This sounds like the plot of the mildest TV drama ever. It would be called something like 'Lunch at 7.30 in the morning'

Sirzy · 30/05/2021 07:48

“I will stick the kettle on ready for you then”

Then when it boils he can make his own.

None issue surely?

theyoungishman · 30/05/2021 07:49

Hazey... I'm in Australia hence why it's lunchtime! And also why it's cold.. to be fair I would have also preferred a cup of tea but couldn't be asked faffing about making one

You were only going for water, but you were going into the kitchen and could have made a cup of tea in no time.

It is a cheeky ask but one I regularly ask myself of other family members, and I am often on the receiving end too.

YABU not to make him a cup of tea.

beryltheperilrocks · 30/05/2021 07:50

Where are you OP? Yes you are being unreasonable. ...tea is very warming and comforting and does not take long to make.

ShutUpAlex · 30/05/2021 07:51

I don’t think it’s cheeky at all. You were getting a drink and asked him if he wanted anything.

I only drink water, don’t drink hot drinks. By your logic I’d never make my fiancée a coffee ever.

beryltheperilrocks · 30/05/2021 07:52

ah Down Under! you could have gone the extra mile and got biscuits.

WimpoleHat · 30/05/2021 07:53

He interpreted what you said as “would you like me to get you a drink?”. Can’t see the drama here....

HazeyJaneII · 30/05/2021 07:54

Ah @theyoungishman, apologies.
It's still a bit of a mild drama though.

ZaraW · 30/05/2021 07:55

YABU putting water in a kettle is not a big deal.

Tossblanket · 30/05/2021 07:55

Making a cup of tea is hardly involved 😂

Yabu.

Ughmaybenot · 30/05/2021 07:55

This is such a brilliantly dull non issue Grin I probably would’ve done it, as it’s nice to be nice and I’m quite keen on both of us putting ourselves out the tiniest bit to make the other feel good where possible... but I’d have probably told him to fuck off first Grin joking... of course...

Itsprobablynothingbut · 30/05/2021 07:56

Yeah I might jokingly think 'FFS, anything else I can get you?!' But to be honest, if it's your partner, doesn't this sort of thing- doing little things for each other- balance itself out over time, so I'd prob just do it if he wanted a cuppa to warm up.

cariadlet · 30/05/2021 07:57

I think he was being cheeky.

DP and I always ask if the other one would like a cup of tea if we're making one for ourselves.

On the other hand, DP also drinks a lot of squash. It would never occur to me to ask him to make me a cuppa if I saw him going out to get himself a glass of squash.

That's really mean spirited of you! He asked for a cuppa, not a 3 course meal!

Itsprobablynothingbut · 30/05/2021 08:01

Hazey there is a Christmas special called 'Opening the After Eights at Half Six'

Steady on, that sounds like racy stuff
theyoungishman · 30/05/2021 08:03

Making a cup of tea takes about 7 minutes I reckon ( boiling the kettle letting the tea brew...), which is quite a long time to be standing about when just want to get drink of water!
And yes it's definitely a non-issue of course. And I was watching mare of east town which is really a good show 😂

My DH has an annoying habit of asking if "I'm putting the kettle on " if I leave the room sometimes. No I'm bloody not.

RubyGoat · 30/05/2021 08:04

Could you not at least have put the kettle on?

theyoungishman · 30/05/2021 08:07

Seashells- he does this also A LOT! It's like you get up (for any reason.. need the toilet, grab a tissue..) and all of a sudden you are on tea making duty!
Update that after the show was finished I offered to make a tea but he said no just to be a dick

Getawriggleon · 30/05/2021 08:08

I do this to my husband all the time. He always makes me a tea.
