Alcohol policy at Harvester

houselikeashed · 29/05/2021 12:06

I had no idea the alcohol limit at Harvester restaurants is 25! We took our DC (age 19 and 16) for a meal last night and DC1 was refused a beer. I can't find this advertised anywhere on the website. They said it is a common thing in restaurants now.

Is it? Have I missed something?

Doesn't that just mean that you will be asked for ID if you look under 25? Which is a thing everywhere.

TheMNChicken · 29/05/2021 12:07

The policy is to ID anyone who LOOKS under 25. If they can prove they are 18 or older they can purchase alcohol. I'm guessing they didn't have ID?

MissBridgetJones · 29/05/2021 12:07

It's not their policy. Must be just the restaurant you visited.

DamnShesaSexyChick · 29/05/2021 12:08

Did he have ID with him?

m0therofdragons · 29/05/2021 12:08

Just means under 25s must show ID. Dh was very young looking into early 30s so always had id.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 29/05/2021 12:08

Did he have I.D

JackANackAnoreeee · 29/05/2021 12:09

Was it just that he needed ID or that he actually had to be over 25? That said I do know some pubs (usually the more food focused ones) are now serving only 25 and older. It's just to avoid crowds of drunken 18 year olds if those aren't their intended market.

cupsofcoffee · 29/05/2021 12:17

It's not.

Challenge 25 means they ask everyone who looks under 25 for ID, not that you have to be 25 to drink.

I assume your 19yo didn't have their ID.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 29/05/2021 12:18

Haha they mean they have to ID anyone who looks under 25. How hilarious 😂 you must have had a newbie serve you. Email them please and let them know. I used to work there.

Troupador · 29/05/2021 12:19

Did they have their ID?

Babbly · 29/05/2021 12:19

It's not. Legally, they aren't allowed to refuse alcohol to people who are under 25 but over 18 because that's age discrimination and is a violation of the Equality Act 2010. Their policy is to request ID from anyone who looks under 25 to check that they're over 18.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/05/2021 12:20

Ah. I see world is getting back to normal with all the wedding agro threads and "they wouldn't serve alcohol" ones. Yay!

houselikeashed · 29/05/2021 12:25

OMG. I think I've completely misunderstood then!! Shock Blush
No, he didn't have suitable ID with him anyway, so it was fair enough.
I thought she was saying that no one under 25 could have alcohol and wanted ID to prove he was 25!

It wasn't a wedding, and it wasn't agro. DC1 was happy to have a coke and we didn't cause a fuss. I just thought I'd missed a new rule coming in.

Very similar thread posted a couple of days ago. Surely all young people (say under 30) know they'll need ID with them if they want to drink or buy alcohol.

He'd forgotten he'd handed in his driving license when he passed his test a few days ago.

I was being asked for ID into my thirties. Unfortunately I have aged a lot and now in my early 40s never get asked!

I always took ID wherever I went out for alcohol. Challenge 25 is not new.

rainbowunicorn · 29/05/2021 12:46

Challenge 25 has been around since 2005 so not sure how you have missed it to be honest. There are posters advertising it in pubs, restaurants, supermarkets etc. Your 19 year old would surely have heard of it as well as would your 16 year old. I honestly can't see how they wouldn't know about this. Have your whole family have been living under a rock for the last 15 years?

Pinkflipflop85 · 29/05/2021 12:47

Pretty sure we had this thread last weekend.

It is nothing new. Challenge 25 has been around for a while.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 29/05/2021 12:48

Bit of a non-story, just like the other thread.

19 year old doesn't have ID, doesn't get served alcohol.

The end.

OnTheBoardwalk · 29/05/2021 12:51

To be fair the 19 year old probably hasn’t had many opportunities since his 18th to be out having beers and being ID'd

Bluntness100 · 29/05/2021 12:57

Challenge 25 has been around for years and is everywhere, even supermarkets, I’m really surprised none of you had heard of it.

2bazookas · 29/05/2021 12:57

beerandpub.com/campaigns/challenge-21/

All a challenged but legal customer needs do, is carry proof of their age. Driving license, passport ,travel pass etc.

My DIL is flattered she still gets challenged "are you over 18?" when buying alcohol. She's a slim, wrinkle-free athletic 40+.

So you did know it was about lack of ID not his age then?
JellyTumble · 29/05/2021 13:10

It’s Challenge 25, and it was introduced in 2009, so it’s been around 12 years now.

So no, it’s not new.
