Do they work?

I went to the dentist for the first time in ages for a check up. Think More then 8 years kind of thing

I had a gum infection a few years ago other then that I don't want to go to the dentist if I don't have an issue!

So I have to have 4 teeth out the wisdom ones and my husband went for his checkup Same time as me. He needed a filling and was told to go to the hygienist. I was told I didn't need it. I have really tight teeth but the dentist said no cavities etc and didn't say to have the hygienist as my teeth looked ok but cramped

Now I am wondering if I should get an air floss thing like the dentist has? Aibu to get one for home use?

I use the little stick things to go between my teeth. I am 28, is it too late to start an air flosser?

@PerfectionistProcrastinator

I find it really interesting that some posters here have had them recommended by their dentist and hygienist. When I told my dentist recently that I had started using a water flosser he rolled his eyes, said they do nothing but wash water around the mouth and said he didn’t know why people “wasted their money on these things”. But my gums have stopped bleeding since I’ve been using mine. Swelling has gone down and my teeth are cleaner. I get on with it so much easier than normal flossing.
Yes, I have changed dentists recently. Hygienist at the old dentists raved about the Waterpik, highly recommended etc. Current hygienist was a bit 'meh' and still advised I should useTepe brushes and tape also.

But all things considered when you see what the Waterpik blasts out from your teeth I think it's great! I clean my teeth before breakfast, eat toast or cereal, have a cuppa then use it. if I didn't that stuff would still be in my teeth presumably.

I love my waterpik water flosser. When I floss with dental floss the plaque is sticky and I have to keep wiping it off the floss - I use the ones with the plastic head that holds a small section of floss. With the waterpik it solves that issue and also removes any tartar build up too.

I just lean over the sink with my mouth slightly open, the top of the waterpik wand allows you to turn the head rather than turning your hand to get to the right angle. I use warm water in mine.

When you first get one use it dry with the machine switched off and look in the mirror, get a feel of running the head around your gum line and between the teeth. Then turn the machine on and recreate the same movements with your head over the sink looking down. I do not get splashed at all. And yes it is a good cleaning tool for jetting water into small places Grin

I got a Waterpik on special offer from Boots for £30 and I really like it. It has different heads including a little brush.

It wasn't expensive (about £25) and has extra brushes and tongue cleaner etc, the knack to using them is to lean over the sink, keep mouth open put the tip into mouth before switching on the run the jet along teeth gaps and gums letting the water run out of mouth into sink, you can see bits dislodged too! I tried a waterpick but did not like the air water pulse it did, mine has different settings so can pulse be sensitive up stages to full blast, holds a good amount of water too.
