To go A&E?

DP has come back from work on a building site and his eye is bright red from about eyebrow height to where the eye bags stop (not sure if that makes sense).
Was drilling a concrete ceiling and thinks but if concrete has got in his eye.
After the incident he rinsed his eye out with water to the best of his ability, and when that didn’t help he used the eyewash station on site.
It’s still no better.
I’m aware that A&E will be hours and hours, but also if it is important then it could of course be worth it.
More of a wwyd.

There is an eye casualty/a&e in the town where I live. Might that be more appropriate? I reckon you don't mess with eyes and isn't concrete caustic??

ThatChristinaAguileraSong · 25/05/2021 16:29

Go. It's not worth the risk - a few hours in A&E or potentially going blind? Get him to take a laptop loaded up with films or a book or something - some snacks, drink etc (don't forget a phone charger).

AluckyEllie · 25/05/2021 16:30

Definately A&E or eye hospital if you have one.

maxineputyourredshoeson · 25/05/2021 16:30

I second eye casualty, we have one at our eye hospital where you can self refer.

sasparilla1 · 25/05/2021 16:30

He really needs to be seen and get it cleaned properly. Concrete is a nasty thing to get in your eye.

Floralnomad · 25/05/2021 16:31

If you get in touch with your GP they may be able to refer him to a Rapid eye clinic locally .

OverByYer · 25/05/2021 16:31

Minor injuries unit?

Feellikeimsinking · 25/05/2021 16:35

Don’t mess about with eyes. As a pp said it’s nasty stuff. DH potentially has chemical burns. Not going to a and e is reckless and I don’t use that term lightly

fairynick · 25/05/2021 16:35

Thank you for all the replies! Would a walk in centre be able to deal with? X

Crockof · 25/05/2021 16:37

I would go to a walk in. They might be able to help but if not they can often get you seen by an eye injuries unit. Even if you end up in A&E I find I feel less like a dick when I say minor injuries Sent me.

gamerchick · 25/05/2021 16:38

Yeah to can't fuck about with eyes.

randomsabreuse · 25/05/2021 16:41

Possibly call your optician - they have all the kit for looking in eyes (GPs and walk in centres don't necessarily have a properly dark room). Failing that, A&E - don't mess with eyes!

nocoolnamesleft · 25/05/2021 16:45

Eye cas if you have one, A&E if not. They'd be set up to irrigate it properly, as well as assess.

DeathMetalMum · 25/05/2021 16:48

Get it seen today. 111 may be able to direct best place even go to an opticians and they'll tell you if need to go to hospital.

LeuvenMan · 25/05/2021 16:50

Walk in centre if there is one nearby. They will be able to examine it and clean/irrigate. It's it's more serious they will send you to A&E/Eye Cas with a referral letter so you will be seen quicker by the right team

NoMoreAngelDelight · 25/05/2021 16:50

Definitely a&e

Pythonesque · 25/05/2021 16:51

Agree, this sounds like it needs to be seen in eye casualty wherever your nearest one is, access to it could be direct if you know where it is or via A&E or walk-in, whichever is most practical.

Allsizes8to14 · 25/05/2021 16:52

I’m an optometrist, yes he should be seen today - concrete in the eye can be quite nasty and needs proper irrigation and the front surface of his eye examining to see if he needs drops. Finding the right service may be tricky - our area had a walk in eye casualty which is the best place. I’d probably try 111 first to see what is available locally, otherwise general A&E is fine but might be a wait like you say!

minnimiss · 25/05/2021 16:52

I would ring 111 they may be able to get you an app at the eye clinic, or advise if an urgent care centre can deal with it and get you an appt there.

fairynick · 25/05/2021 16:52

I ended up ringing the local switchboard and they actually recommended Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Connected me to them and they told us where to go. He’s on his way now, thanks everyone! Smile

Yes I agree that something needs to be done with this one, walk-in or A&E. I've never heard of an eye casualty, but that sounds very fancy!

Oh brill! Hope he's ok
ShopTattsyrup · 25/05/2021 16:59

I can see you're sorted - the MRI eye hospital is great and have a speedy urgent care area!

For future reference, in my A&E we categorise something like this as a category 1 (highest priority) as chemicals/foreign bodies in eyes are nasty and need looking at ASAP Smile always go for A&E!

DeflatedGinDrinker · 25/05/2021 17:02

You not got an eye hospital department within your hospital OP? Ours has and it has a walk in session every day. Worth checking but if not go A&E

DeflatedGinDrinker · 25/05/2021 17:02

Oh just see your update OP sorry
