Should I have second vaccine?

Not interested in anti vaccine opinions as v pro vaccine but I have been a bit unlucky. I had my az covid jab a few weeks ago and suffered a non life threatening but annoying thromboembolism (clot) I’m due my second in a few weeks. Would you get it? The data says not to have it if you have suffered a major clot but nothing about what a major clot is.
Anyone had a mix of az and Pfizer under 50?
I have a vulnerable young son and want to be protected, I work with the public. equally don’t want to push my luck
Unresonable- get it you worry wort
Not unresonable - risks out way benefits

Sympathy Allthegearnoidea. I have not had a blood clot but have a underlying blood clotting disorder (Leiden factor five) and had the first dose of AstraZeneca before the blood clotting issues came out. I did actually have my second dose today - I called my GP to discuss yesterday who was unable to definitively advise one way or another, mixing vaccines was not given as an option though. In the end I decided to go for it (as the blood clotting disorder would be be a problem if I actually caught COVID anyway, and the GP said just the first dose would only provide 30% protection against the Indian variant). Difficult though, any booster vaccinations etc I will definitely be put down for Pfizer instead.

Have you been started on an anticoagulant following your clot? There's reassuring data that the first dose is 76% percent effective so you don't need to panic that you are putting your child at risk whilst in limbo...you have done what you could for them at the moment.

I honestly don't think its good enough for your GP to say they don't know. There are a fair number of people worldwide who have had this issue and they should be able to access some data/make a plan such as having the vaccination in hospital though realistically I believe the thrombosis is normally a few days after so not sure how that would work. There is very little data around mixing vaccines because they are so new so not sure you will get a definitive answer but could GP/consultant consider prophylactic heparin if you do have the next dose?

There must be something in place for people who have had full anaphylaxis, there's no way they are giving them the same jag twice.

If it was me I would be getting back to doc and getting a more proactive plan. Could they/you liase with a pharmacist? They are experts on evidence around medication and I know a lot of work was done by pharmacist around breastfeeding and vaccines at the early role out so surely they could help with this?

Maybe check in with a different GP?

passmethemilk · 25/05/2021 16:58

I'm not sure why people are jumping on you so quickly op!
Mumsnet is a chat forum and you want a chat!
There's already been some good advice given about getting referred and not accepting your gp leaving you to your own decision.
I've had side effects for ages after the vaccine so have similar worries about my second dose.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 25/05/2021 16:59

I wouldn't in your situation. If a doctor cannot tell me I'll be fine then that's a no from me. I had my vaccine btw but no side effects.

AlgalDoom · 25/05/2021 17:06

You don't have to have the same vaccine, so you can ask that your second vaccine is Pfizer - it's in the Public Health Guidance since January.

No doctor will ever tell you that vaccines are one hundred percent safe.

stopringingme · 25/05/2021 17:07

I had my 2nd dose of AZ on Saturday at a vaccine centre and the Nurse you sit down with asked if I had a history of blood clots and what reaction I had to the 1st Jab.

The Doctor who administered my 2nd dose also asked the same before giving me my jab. He also said you are less likely to get side effects with the 2nd dose, but obviously it is not guaranteed.

I cannot answer your question as I do not suffer from blood clots, but thought I would let you know what I was asked when attending to get my 2nd jab.

Wowthisisreal · 25/05/2021 17:12

My understanding was that there's been no reported blood clots with the second dose of AZ, only the first dose.

Zilla1 · 25/05/2021 17:12

Agree massvac don't always know nor always understand the boundaries of their knowledge (frustratingly they advised patient we'd spent hours reviewing and discussing with consultant before advising to be vaccinated that they shouldn't be vaccinated and then unprofessionally said GP didn't know what we were talking about when they'd no understanding of the medical history nor were correct in their assessment based on what they were told [listened to audio recording when patient complained to us and played their recording] In the end, we had another delivery of relevant vaccine and vaccinated them ourselves). We would need to understand more detail of your presentation so I think, OP, this is one for GP and possibly further advice, depending on what happened after first vac and your full history.

Good luck, OP.

Zilla1 · 25/05/2021 17:14

"If a doctor cannot tell me I'll be fine then that's a no from me" - perhaps try not to take any medicines or vaccinations if that's your personal baseline then. Might not be in your interests as most circumstances have a cost and benefit trade off so you'd have all the costs and risks of the untreated condition for which the managed risk of treatment would otherwise be required.

Roonerspismed · 25/05/2021 17:15

There have been clots from second dose AZ by the way. It was announced last week

PurpleDaisies · 25/05/2021 17:16

It’s not zero but it’s a tiny number.
FayK · 25/05/2021 17:35

I work in a vaccine centre and we have been administering second doses of Astra Zeneca this week. When we take patient through the screening questions we ask about any reactions they had from the first dose. Your experience would red flag you and you would not be allowed to have your second dose until you had discussed it with our on-site GP. Our on-site medics have up to date information regarding all the vaccines and are very well informed. So I would suggest making your second appointment and discussing it when you go. We are always happy to postpone appointments if people need time to think about it or need referrals before they are vaccinated. Also at the moment we aren’t allowed to mix vaccines so currently having a second dose of another vaccine wouldn’t be an option but there are trials to study the effectiveness of doing so. Hope that helps.

Mindymomo · 25/05/2021 17:36

I would feel the same as you. They have mixed vaccines in other countries for people who had AZ first, so would think they would want to give you something else for your second. Good luck. I personally don’t know where you can go to for advice, if your GP doesn’t know.

Cryalot2 · 25/05/2021 17:55

Sorry things are like this op.
I would speak to a senior practice nurse who often will be more helpful .
We all had az. It varied how we were, 2nd much better.
We had covid and seen how it spread and sadly lost loved ones to it. Some of us have been left with long covid, others have had friends die from it. We never want covid ever again.
Wishing you well

Saoirse82 · 25/05/2021 21:45

OP, I totally sympathise. Im pregnant and have had the first AZ jab before getting pregnant, I'm a higher risk pregnancy as I'm 39 and bmi of 32. I too have asked GP, midwife and consultant and none of them can advise me whether its safe to mix vaccines or whether to have it or to not. They just don't know. So I suppose asking on mumsnet was a long shot but someone may have come along who knew something! The best advise I've had is off my cousin who was a doctor, she seemed to know more about the vaccine as she'd been working at the vaccination centre but midwife honestly told me she didn't have a clue. @TakeYourFinalPosition were you advised to not have the 2nd vaccine due to being pregnant?
I hope you get some clarity OP. For me personally I think I'll wait til more data becomes available even though I'm very anxious not to be fully protected but hoping we'll have some.

BarbarianMum · 25/05/2021 21:48

I'm very pro vaccine but I'm your case OP I'd be talking to the gp about switching to Pfizer.

BarbarianMum · 25/05/2021 21:48

in your case

ceilingsand · 25/05/2021 22:23

This is a medical matter!

XenoBitch · 25/05/2021 22:27

100% up to you. Strangers on the internet should not be making medical decisions for you.
