Should I have second vaccine?

Allthegearnoideas · 25/05/2021 15:40

Not interested in anti vaccine opinions as v pro vaccine but I have been a bit unlucky. I had my az covid jab a few weeks ago and suffered a non life threatening but annoying thromboembolism (clot) I’m due my second in a few weeks. Would you get it? The data says not to have it if you have suffered a major clot but nothing about what a major clot is.
Anyone had a mix of az and Pfizer under 50?
I have a vulnerable young son and want to be protected, I work with the public. equally don’t want to push my luck
Unresonable- get it you worry wort
Not unresonable - risks out way benefits

TakeYourFinalPosition Thank you. I think all I really want is someone else who has gone through this. I want it so I can protect myself and my child but am terrified. I’m not going to listen to people telling me what to do as the law. I have a mind, I’m not stupid but people who are meant to help can’t. I didn’t see a clot specialist at all. it’s lovely to hear a though process from someone walking in my shoes.

this is awful for you to be left alone with this. As far as I know the only direct advice to HCPs at the moment is no second vaccine if the blood clot occured alongside low platelet count, which you seem to be saying didn't happen for you. There are trials ongong for mixing but not finished yet.

I guess these guys are snowed under at the moment but they might be able to direct you to the latest evidence? thrombosisuk.org/

CoffeeCakey · 25/05/2021 16:12

I'd ask the people doing the vaccinating? I think they ask about reactions etc when you go?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 25/05/2021 16:17

Why are you terrified of waiting? Maybe explore that, it's not a proportionate response to the current risk to a half vaccinated person who I assume is taking all the precautions they can.

Allthegearnoideas · 25/05/2021 16:17

I don’t know if I had thrombocytopenia as well. It reacted 2 days later the info regarding clotting risks was just emerging.

A friend was given the Oxford first dose despite suffering from a clotting disorder. Then she was given the pziezzer for her second because guidelines have changed and you should not be given the oxford with any existing blood clotting disorders. She is on meds for her previous clots. So please go back and ask the gp for the most recent advice. She is now part of a small study of people who have been given a dose of each.

GaspingGekko · 25/05/2021 16:19

If you are able to request a different vaccine - not sure how this works where you are - the preliminary data seems to suggest that it is effective.

How was it left with your GP?

motogogo · 25/05/2021 16:20

Speak to your gp who can consult with a specialist. I would think having Pfizer would be sensible

SchrodingersImmigrant · 25/05/2021 16:21

@Roonerspismed

Why are you asking on MN? Surely this is a medical question for your GP

I hope you have recovered ok

This.

People lie online! That can be really dangerous

Is that in England? I didnt know they were mixing vaccines, has that started recently?

The advice was that having a history of clots didn't automatically exclude you from having AZ, it's not quite as straight forward as that is it?

Don't bother asking at the vaccination clinic, they have no more knowledge that your gp.

I think you need to go back to your GP and ask for a referral to hospital. I'm a big fan of asking on MN but something like that is beyond its realm really.

But saying that I will say what I would do in your position is the above- and ask for a referral before having the second jab.

time4anothername · 25/05/2021 16:23

@Allthegearnoideas

that's really important information for you to know. I presume you had blood tests when it happened? You need to get your records from where you were treated as your platelet count would surely have been part of your bloods panel and I certainly wouldn't be going ahead with the second jab until I'd established that I did not have thrombocytopenia.
Allthegearnoideas · 25/05/2021 16:24

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair Instead of getting snippy, you have a vulnerable child, work with the public and the world is relaxing. I also know someone 5 years older than me who lost his life to covid. I did however actually mean terrified of getting the vaccine and having a worse reaction. I know I’m lucky to have one on board but it’s not great with the new variant. Thanks for your thoughts though.

Is google broken for you? Confused

Do you mean to be so rude?

I don't get this sneery dismissive response, I'm seeing similar all over MN. This is a forum, where people discuss things and find out new information, it's called having a conversation. It's worth double checking facts but having a general discussion is the whole point of the forum. If people googled everything there would be nothing to discuss.

Pinkdelight3 · 25/05/2021 16:28

@PurpleDaisies it's not compulsory to keep replying so rudely either, but that doesn't seem to be stopping you.

PurpleSplodge · 25/05/2021 16:28

I am not a doctor but your GP saying "I don't know" is not good enough.

Can you go back to you GP and ask if they do not know then you'd like to be put in contact with someone that knows more than they do?

Personally I wouldn't have the 2nd dose until a medically trained professional has given you their opinion on how to proceed.

nancypineapple · 25/05/2021 16:29

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair yes she is in England. Her GP contacted her and explained and she also took advice from her hospital specialist.

Allthegearnoideas · 25/05/2021 16:30

Thank you for the helpful comments. I hadn’t actually thought about asking for further referral.
I had no bloods.
Where it was, it was pathognomonic so just dealt with.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 25/05/2021 16:31

It's difficult with gp not being able to help and signpost you properly. I think Scotland has a number you can call with enquiries, but not sure if England or Wales do. They could maybe be able to advise?

countbackfromten · 25/05/2021 16:31

Please go back to your GP and they can seek advise from a haematologist who will be able to help risk stratify for what should happen next/will know who to talk to to get the answer.

Much safer than just asking Mumsnet and what I would be doing!!

KOKOagainandagain · 25/05/2021 16:33

You clearly need specific medical advice that takes your personal experiences into account. It would be risky/jumping the gun to act before you got that advice.

If you can't get specific advice now or your doctor doesn't know, then you may decide to wait until you can receive professional advice before you decide. You can always rebook. Don't think there is a clock ticking and it's now or never.

It's really not up to you alone to decide how serious an adverse reaction to the first vaccine was or whether potential risk of second vaccine outweighs potential risk of becoming infected, transmitting, morbidity and mortality. Especially when the risk of encountering the infection (due to restrictions) are relatively low but rising in some areas.

PurpleDaisies · 25/05/2021 16:33

I was a bit grumpy in my response to you @AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair, apologies. I will withdraw my post. Medical threads often irritate me because people post from a position of little knowledge and don’t bother to check they’re not talking crap.

You should get your post about mixing vaccines not being worth a full vaccine withdrawn @Pinkdelight3 because it’s really misleading.
