To not want to deal with previous house owners mail?

I recently moved in to a property, when I arrived there was an instruction list for things like where to find the gas/electric meters etc. But at the end it also asked me to pass any mail for them on to my new next door neighbour for them to collect.
At first I was okay with this, I assumed they had arranged to have their post redirected to their new address but some things would inevitably be missed. Since then it has become clear they haven't tried to redirect it at all, I've received everything from packages to letters marked important, I get more mail for them than for me, I really don't think I should have to deal with it.
Now maybe I would be more willing to go out of my way to help them if they had been better about the move but they left so much junk I had to pay a private uplift to get rid of it all, when my solicitor contacted them about it they denied leaving anything so I'm a bit miffed at them as it is.
Anyway, aibu to want to just write "not known at this address" on everything and post it back to the senders?

I forwarded everything to the previous owners solicitor.
They weren't particularly impressed.🤷🏻‍♀️

It's the fact they left rubbish that makes it reasonable to throw the stuff away, and some people regardless of any rules might open official looking stuff, such as DVLA or anything from a Court to avoid your address being chased for debt or linked to criminal offences- they may be deliberately using your (their old) address for some dodgy activity, or to avoid paying something.

I wanted to give the neighbours the bundle of letters we have now for the people and leave a note with it given them a week longer of us taking in their mail to set up a redirect. My husband wanted to bin the lot and RTS any we get in future, so we compromised. I'll be handing the last bundle to the neighbour today with a note asking the previous owners to set up a redirect as any post received after today will be returned to sender.

Argh we are having this problem too!

At first I was dropping the letters off to the estate agent. Now it's been 5 months since we moved and still getting letters.

We paid for our own mail to be redirected for 6 months. Not sure why they couldn't do that.

honeylulu · 25/05/2021 08:34

The former owners of our old house only redirected their mail for 3 months. Loads of it kept coming. I tried return to sender but it kept coming. No forwarding address anyway.

I started sending it on to the estate agent who must have got really fed up and bollocked them because it has slowed down massively.

We had to deal with deceased father in law’s property. We informed everyone of his death and gave our details for any future correspondence. He hardly got any mail so we didn’t bother with redirecting. After 3 months with the new buyers in the house, the estate agent called to say they had been given a bundle of post. When we collected it, it seems that despite informing all utilities, dvla, insurance etc., they took no notice and sent out reminders to pay or to contact them. I returned all of them writing Deceased, no longer at this address. We also told the estate agent to tell the new buyers to throw away anything arriving now.

Your course of action sounds entirely reasonable, OP. Sometimes changes can take a little while to take effect so I'd have no problem forwarding things for at least 3 months, if not a year. Maybe that's unusual though, and I'd certainly not be expecting lots of post or deliveries.

I've lived at my current address for 5 and a half years and still receive the odd medical or financial letter for one of the previous owners. I RTS everything and have even opened a few of these to call the sender and let them know what's going on, but it just won't stop. Very frustrating.

GillianAnderson · 25/05/2021 09:54

Considering how they've left, and then denied the junk I would put all their mail in the bin. You don't owe them any favors and they've shown their true colours

Cheapskates too, didn't pay to have junk collected or redirection. Scrap man would happily take metal shelving

Tossblanket · 25/05/2021 11:26

I bin our previous owners mail now, fuck them.

It's been 4 years, if they can't get their admin in order in that time it's tough.

Annonnn · 25/05/2021 15:51

I've posted the letters through the neighbours letter box with a note asking the previous owners to sort out a redirect for their mail. I don't really know the neighbours here yet but it sounds like they got along very well with the previous owners so I do hope my new neighbours don't think badly of me for it.

I’d tell them you won’t be taking their mail anymore so they need to change their address and arrange redirection. Give them a week to get everything changed over, in the meantime send it all back with not at this address on the front. Then just start chucking everything away. I used to put the previous owners post in the recycling bin.

RedMarauder · 25/05/2021 15:58

Put "Return to sender" on the mail and post it back every 2 weeks.

Banks and credit card companies after 3-4 months of receiving returned stuff will stop sending it out, and some put a block on the account.

Rinoachicken · 25/05/2021 16:44

I did return to sender for everything for the first 2/3 months, then only important looking stuff (like from pension companies and finance companies etc). After a year I just bin everything.

It’s been 8 years and STILL the previous tenant gets official looking letters coming here. He was a builder and we’ve had invoices to his ‘business’ and debt reminders (I did call them to say no longer here!)

user1471538283 · 25/05/2021 16:49

This really annoys me. We are expected to do the return to sender thing but this pandemic has highlighted how entitled and selfish people are so I dont. Just bin it.

NoMoreAngelDelight · 25/05/2021 16:53

Open a fe low things which look interesting then give them to your neighbour…. Oops! Then start returning to sender. They are cf.

NoMoreAngelDelight · 25/05/2021 16:53

Open a few letters…

AmberIsACertainty · 25/05/2021 17:08

You missed a trick with the junk OP. Should have boxed it up gave it to the neighbors - parcels arived! Grin
