To not want to deal with previous house owners mail?

Annonnn · 24/05/2021 19:07

I recently moved in to a property, when I arrived there was an instruction list for things like where to find the gas/electric meters etc. But at the end it also asked me to pass any mail for them on to my new next door neighbour for them to collect.
At first I was okay with this, I assumed they had arranged to have their post redirected to their new address but some things would inevitably be missed. Since then it has become clear they haven't tried to redirect it at all, I've received everything from packages to letters marked important, I get more mail for them than for me, I really don't think I should have to deal with it.
Now maybe I would be more willing to go out of my way to help them if they had been better about the move but they left so much junk I had to pay a private uplift to get rid of it all, when my solicitor contacted them about it they denied leaving anything so I'm a bit miffed at them as it is.
Anyway, aibu to want to just write "not known at this address" on everything and post it back to the senders?

It's been almost 3 weeks since they moved out so not a long time but I don't know how long they expected us to keep taking in their mail for hmm

😂😂😂😂 It's been 5 years and I binned a letter just last week😂 3 weeks are nothing.
Ee did return to sender, then I started binning it

UrAWizHarry · 24/05/2021 20:10

Cheeky, tight fuckers. I'd do one more drop with a note saying that everything from this point onwards is being returned to sender.

addictedtotheflats · 24/05/2021 20:11

We still get post from previous owners from 5 years ago! I sent it back at first but now it all goes in the bin.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/05/2021 20:14

I'd go for "no longer at this address" rather than "not known...." - but in returning to sender hopefully a lot of them will update their databases and the crap will stop coming.
Agree with PP - chuck any obvious parking fines - at least until the 7 or 14 days when you're only liable for half the fine is up Grin

osbertthesyrianhamster · 24/05/2021 20:15

Stop taking their packages. And order a stamp, 'Return to Sender. Not at this address' and chuck all their post in the nearest box.

Essexgirlupnorth · 24/05/2021 20:18

We have been in our house 4 years used to get loads of post. Started returning to sender and then people who lived her got it touch as they had forgot to change the cars registered address and got a speeding fine sent to our address. That has kicked them into gear and now get the odd thing mainly catalogues which go in the recycling.

Roselilly36 · 24/05/2021 20:20

How strange for them to not set up a re-direction for their Mail. Not your responsibility to deal with it, RTS not at this address is the way to go.

CecilyP · 24/05/2021 20:22

It’s not that strange, Roselilly, the neighbour is free!

Anonymouslyposting · 24/05/2021 20:25

Our sellers asked us to forward their mail, we agreed as it was before exchange and we knew they had two other offers at the same price or higher so were desperate not to offend them. They said they would tell everyone they’d moved so it shouldn’t be much. Two years later we’re still sending stuff on - Christmas is a nightmare - they get a lot more cards than we do! I know we should stop forwarding it but they are a sweet old couple so we’re putting up with it, but you certainly wouldn’t be unreasonable not to do so.

murbblurb · 24/05/2021 20:28

Who gets this much post? Just leave one more note saying that is it, telling them to set up a redirect and start changing addresses. Then start binning. You aren't their clerical staff.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 24/05/2021 20:30

The previous owner of my house flatly refused to give a forwarding address. For a few weeks I handed everything in to the estate agent but they then refused to accept any more aomit all gets binned.

I got her p60 again this year, been her nearly 2 years now and apparently she hasn't altered it even with her employer.

Bargebill19 · 24/05/2021 20:30

If you are feeling really annoyed, write deceased and return to sender.

If you’re feeling generous, stick a note on your day with “post for mr/ms xyz to go next door.”

But yes to stopping forwarding on via your neighbour.

FangsForTheMemory · 24/05/2021 20:33

I write 'gone away' on the previous owner's stuff and put it i n the postbox. They asked me to leave it with a neighbour, who got fed up with it after a week or so.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 24/05/2021 20:34

The previous owner of this house was similar. The garage was full of junk when we moved in and we ended up taking it to the tip. She also hadn't paid for redirection and after three years we stopped delivering it to her house (not far away) and started returning to sender. We have been here four years now and it seems to have stopped coming.
We paid for a full year's redirection for our mail, even though we only moved round the corner so it was a bit annoying.

NoSquirrels · 24/05/2021 20:40

Give bundle to neighbour with a big note saying ‘Please set up a redirect by X date, as any post received after this will be returned to sender’

Then write Not At This Address on any post you get after that date and stick back in post box. I’d do this for a year max, then just bin it.

BrieAndChilli · 24/05/2021 20:52

We have this problem. Moved in in feb, they vendors had moved out in October so had plenty of time to sort out addresses etc. (We moved, set up post redirect for 12 months (for all 5 of us including 10 year old DS) to catch anything yearly that we might have forgotton about and immediately changed addresses with everything important - bank accounts HMRC etc)
They had also left a not saying to give to neighbour. Which we duly did for a few weeks but we were getting bank stuff, what felt like new cards, HMRC, next account etc etc, we then started doing return to sender and one time DH bumped into the postman who mentioned us getting post for old people so if it’s him he just takes it back again to put back in the post return to sender!! We still occasionally get stuff, I’m assuming if a different postman. Thier son has recently turned 16 so have had a few things like national insurance number we think and a bank card or something so have passed those on.

Cantbebotheredtothinkofaname · 24/05/2021 20:54

The previous owner of my current house still gets more mail delivered than we do... and we’ve lived here for over 5 years! They also appear to be actively using the address for new things, cheeky sods! It all goes in the bin. I used to return to sender but it made no difference so now I just bin it. They left the house filthy as well.

DotBall · 24/05/2021 20:57

It's been almost 3 weeks since they moved out

Bloody hell, I thought you were talking 3 months not 3 weeks!
I am definitely in the YANBU camp but give them a chance to get their act together for a few weeks.

Give them notice perhaps after 6 weeks and then return or bin.

ButNotTonight20 · 24/05/2021 20:59

I would want to know why they think it's ok to still use your address.

When we moved to our house 8 years ago we had bags and bags of mail for the previous owner. We contacted him about it and he said just to throw it away...very suspicious.

Then the bailiffs and creditors started to turn up. Turns out he had racked up huge debts and done a runner abroad to escape his creditors after the house sale. Hence never getting his mail redirected.

We never had a problem turning the bailiffs away once we explained the situation and they were pretty decent to deal with but it was not a nice situation.

We sent everything back to sender and also followed up with emails if it had an address on the back. We still get mail for him occasionally but only a few now.

Clydie89 · 24/05/2021 21:11

3 weeks is nothing. The people we bought from, a mid 30s couple, both teachers, still haven't updated their address on things from 4 years ago.

They called round once for mail about a week after we'd moved in, after that I emailed them to say they had stuff delivered etc and to pop round to collect again but no response so I just RTS'd it as they hadn't bothered to put a redirect on. We've had new contracts of employment, p45s, payslips, p60s, all sorts of bank /financial looking info etc and most recently, their f*ING covid jag info! They moved out of the area but must not have even registered at a new GP in the last 4 Years Hmm Unfortunately the wife's first name and maiden name (we get mail in both her names) are very similar to mine so I do occasionally still sign for parcels accidentally then have to send back which is a pain!

Livingintheclouds · 24/05/2021 21:18

I still get mail from the previous owner at my rental investment after four years. A local celebrity. It's almost all overdue parking fines. I spent two years 'return to sender addressee moved' but still get them - her fines must be well in to thousands by now!
My tenants must have dealt with this, and the odd thing is he didn't redirect his own mail! I used to put it on top of the mail box but someone now keeps posting them back in. I texted him I've sold it and to redirect his mail. I've also told the new owners to just bin it all from now on.

katy1213 · 24/05/2021 21:18

I'd just bin it. Unless it looks as if it's from bailiffs, in which case I'd obligingly pass on their new address.
Even 'return to sender' is an imposition.
And I don't take in parcels for anyone or expect them to do so for me.

SnackSizeRaisin · 24/05/2021 21:22

I'd carry on passing it to the neighbours for 3 months and then RTS everything. 2 weeks is not long at all. Seems a bit mean to begrudge that.

bakingdemon · 24/05/2021 21:25

Three weeks isn't that long! I would tell them you'll pass stuff on for another two weeks (say) and then you'll return everything to sender. Royal Mail redirection is excellent and only costs about £60 for a year.

We returned our vendors' post to sender for about 6 months and then started just putting it in the bin. We probably get a couple of things a month for them still.

2bazookas · 24/05/2021 21:35

Just write to them and say "Please arrange for the post office to redirect your mail as soon as possible." No reason. no excuses.
