to be driven up the wall by this

I'm the first to admit I'm a bit of a control freak, but I try to keep a lid on it for the sake of family harmony (even though my way is always clearly right & better). Having said that, I manage to remain calm in the face of incorrectly paired socks most of the time. But it drives me up the wall when DP makes his lunch and stands in the kitchen eating it off the chopping board (usually while still finishing prepping it) instead of, y'know, getting a plate and sitting down like a normal civilised human being.

And when the kids come in from outside they always keep their coats on until repeatedly told to take them off. Our house is a normal reasonable temperature. They'll lounge around watching telly in their coats till I insist they're taken off when we all sit down to eat dinner. Who eats dinner inside wearing their outdoor coat? Grrrnnnnghhh!

YABU - it's fine, chill out, who cares about plates and coats and normal behaviour
YANBU - of course you're right and your family are uncivilised retrogrades that need telling

Jesus christ, it's just as well you haven't got a real problem, isn't it.

DysmalRadius · 24/05/2021 17:37

I'm all for a bit of well-placed control-freakery, but I limit it to the things that actually affect me. Other than the affront to your eyes, do either of these things actually negatively impact your life? Because that really defines whether or not YABU.

JorisBonson · 24/05/2021 17:38

Yep.

You committed the cardinal mn sin of not putting 'lighthearted' in your post OP.

100%!
FFS people, you can tell it's just a bit of a rant! Honestly, this place sometimes 🙄

Mintjulia · 24/05/2021 17:55

Well, neither of those things actually causes a problem. Unless you want to get to the chopping board I suppose. Irritating though.

I prefer to pick my battles. Like DS refusing to wear a coat in January because it's 'lame' and then getting flu. Or my ex trying to give DS a kg of Haribo on a Sunday morning. (Why would any sane adult give a child a kilo of sugar ffs? [Confused])

cheesecrackerz · 24/05/2021 17:57

My DP does that too!

He even specifically bought a nice wooden chopping board for this very purpose

But he's still using our normal chopping boards instead!!

DroopyDaff · 24/05/2021 18:00

You obviously haven’t trained them very well OP. DC have have been trained since toddlerhood that coats and shoes come off at the door.

I wouldn’t care about where your DP eats his lunch (if he’s the only one eating and it’s not a family meal) as long as he clears it up after himself. That’s a tad extreme.

I get crumb rage. They’re bloody everywhere since the DC started helping themselves and I admit to being unhealthily obsessed by them Blush. When DH eats sunflower seeds it makes me apoplectic so he doesn’t very often Grin.

Geppili · 24/05/2021 18:00

My nemesis like this is all the fucking urine which gets sprayed everywhere over my loo! I am the only female in my household. It makes me feel homicidal (in a lighthearted way).

pussycatlickinglollyices · 24/05/2021 18:02

DP makes his lunch and stands in the kitchen eating it off the chopping board

I do this sometimes - I actually prefer to eat standing up.

Geppili · 24/05/2021 18:03

Also my DH always has only evolved so far in the essential life skill of hanging your fucking coat up! When we met he would leave it on the floor, now we are middle aged and married with DC he has progressed to hanging his coat up every time comes in, BUT he can only manage to hang it on the door handle of our very generous under stairs coat cupboard. Every night I put it away. Grin

MrsClatterbuck · 24/05/2021 18:06

I really really want to know what kind of lunch you would eat of a chopping board apart from a sandwich. I know I'm missing the point of the thread.

petridishmystery · 24/05/2021 18:08

My mum does the coat thing and it irritates me, my sister, and my uncle (her BIL). None of us are entirely sure why it annoys us as it doesn’t effect any of us and we don’t say anything but we are all sat there side eyeing her and there’s palpable relief when she finally takes the bloody thing off. I really don’t know why it annoys me so much but it does!

rainyskylight · 24/05/2021 18:08

YABU re eating lunch in the kitchen. I do that all the time when WFH and hungry. Sometimes food is just fuel.

YANBU re the coats. That’s just nasty on the furniture. Inside clothes inside!

SnarkyBag · 24/05/2021 18:14

The eating from the chopping board only annoys me when I’m making a roast and whilst I’m making the gravy I can see DH eating bits of the meat he’s carved straight off the board. If he’s making a solo lunch he can do what he likes!

Vodkaandballoon · 24/05/2021 18:17

Fuck it!. Who cares

Lottapianos · 24/05/2021 18:19

Jesus, some people Hmm not you, OP

I get driven up the wall by all sorts of stuff too. I try to acknowledge the control freakery and try to laugh about it. TRY being the operative word Grin I feel your pain though, especially about the coats

tattleandbagels · 24/05/2021 18:24

Your kids are something special! All the parents around me are fighting to get their to put a bloody jumper on Grin

I wouldn't allow my kids to keep coats inside, it's ridiculous.

Your DH? As long as it's not in front of the kids and he keeps the kitchen clean after, let it go.

AntiHop · 24/05/2021 18:26

My DH does that too. Grin I don't understand why he doesn't want to sit down and relax whilst eating.

Spodge · 24/05/2021 18:29

YANBU. My husband makes the sandwich on the chopping board but then eats it over the hob which is an absolute bastard to clean. Leaving the fridge open all the while.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 24/05/2021 18:29

You’d hate me. I got in 20 mins ago and I’ve still got my coat on. I’ve had a snack, got the youngest to bed and now I’m sat in bed.

3Britnee · 24/05/2021 19:11

Amazing! First response! I consider that a triumph Grin Grin

I didn't bother putting 'lighthearted' as it so very obviously was

No, these things don't really affect me in any meaningful way, but they still drive me round the bend. Interesting the vote is pretty much 50/50 at the mo - I'm reassured to know I'm completely middlingly irrational Grin

😂😂😂

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/05/2021 19:47

Someone will come along and complain about DHs generating too ,any dirty dishes when they could just eat a sandwich off a paper towel....and children refusing to wear coats outside (especially of the teenage variety because their outfit is show worthy).
