I want to cancel my membership but need to use up my credits first! I've already paused my membership once in the last year so I can't do that again.

Anyone got any recommendations for good audiobooks? Something that is pretty gripping and easy to get through :)

Thanks so much lovely MNetters

My recent favourites

All that remains by Sue Black
War Doctor by David Nott
Not my father’s son by Alan Cumming
The bone clocks by David Mitchell
The last day by Andrew Hunter Murray

Cannot recommend Jurassic Park enough. The book is so different to the film and I was hooked to the audio version on Audible!!

Krook · 24/05/2021 22:34

If you like non-fiction, 'Why We Sleep' is fascinating. Also 'The Body' (Bill Bryson) and, surprisingly, 'The Secret Life of Trees'.

Booksaremylife · 24/05/2021 22:35

7 husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Shuggie Bain
The Mercies
A Treachery of
spies
My sister the serial killer
Big Girl Small Town
The Milkman
Where the Crawdads Sing

All of the above brilliantly narrated, in regional
Accents where appropriate!

Booksaremylife · 24/05/2021 22:37

All the Hilary Mantel wolf hall series are fantastically narrated too.

rookiemere · 25/05/2021 08:10

Ironically I now think I need to keep my membership to download all these fantastic sounding books !

I have 24 credits on my audible account and will receive another 12 in July, I have never heard there is a limit on accumulations.

Anything by Bill Bryson he is so so funny.

Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell is lovely or anything by her but not really humorous.

Robert Galbraith Strike books are addictive. I have attempted Rivers of London series several times but really didn’t like them.

FinallyFluid · 26/05/2021 10:38

I used Audible last night and fell asleep really quickly, however does anyone know how to adjust the speed of narration, as it was quite fast.

Please and thank you.

LadyJaye · 26/05/2021 11:40

@ByTheNine

The Rivers of London series - supernatural detective stories, there's loads of them and they're all great.
Came to suggest RoL - aided by the fact that Kobnah Holdbrook-Smith is a BRILLIANT narrator.

I also recently enjoyed The Stranger Times by CK McDonnell.

44PumpLane · 26/05/2021 12:09

Now I'm. Not commuting I rarely get a chance to sit and listen to audio hooks and really concentrate, but I like to listen to books while I work so they have to be books I've read a hundred times so if I zone out I don't "miss" anything!

I love all the Harry Potter books and Jurassic Park for that reason.

I too have 6 credits on my account currently so have just quickly bought the Sherlock Holmes read by Fry, Mythos read by Fry and "As you wish" purely based on this thread! Grin

If you are using the app you should see a “1.0” near the bottom left corner. If you click on that you should be able to change the speed.

Where the crawdads sing
The last thing he told me
What Alice forgot
A view across the rooftops
Last night

Sorry I haven’t put author names. It’s a range of books so hopefully something you enjoy.

lidoshuffle · 27/05/2021 07:03

The Five by Haille Rubenhold. The full and interesting lives of Jack the Ripper's victims and what led them to ending up in Whitechapel.

It's not gory, it's not about their horrible ends but their lives. You read it thanking the gods we were born when we were.

Quincesorbet · 27/05/2021 07:14

I was also caught out by the 6 credits maximum a couple of years ago. I paused it for a few months and now am listening to audiobooks more when I am driving, cooking dinner etc. It’s also good if I have to read something for my book group which I’m not that keen on.

I’ve really enjoyed the following ones, with narrators who fit well with the story:
The Martian by Andy Weir - great suspense
The Dutch House by Ann Patchett - loved this and it’s read by Tom Hanks
The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare
Shuggie Bain
Hamnett
I also like all the books by Curtis Sittenfield

I quite enjoyed the Michelle Obama book, but she speaks really slowly! ((but too fast if you speed it up)

Looking forward to trying some of the suggestions on this thread.

Leonardsgirl · 27/05/2021 07:21

I didn't know it capped it at 6 credits either! No wonder I get so many emails reminding me to use my credits.....

I'm off to look at some of these suggestions. I really enjoyed Mythos by Stephen Fry. I couldn't get into the book, but the audiobook was great. Fascinating to listen to.

LittleRa · 27/05/2021 07:23

Ben Miles reading the Wolf Hall trilogy

Stephen Fry reading the Harry Potter series

Helenluvsrob · 27/05/2021 07:25

Monty don reading Nigel.
Balm for the brain and dogs as well.

Aspiringmatriarch · 27/05/2021 07:39

Recently listened to The Wee Free Men with my eight year old son, we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

I also thought Eleanor Oliphant and The Rosie Project worked well as audio books, the humour came across really well and I don't think I'd have enjoyed them as much just reading.

The classics are great on audible too.
