I want to cancel my membership but need to use up my credits first! I've already paused my membership once in the last year so I can't do that again.

Anyone got any recommendations for good audiobooks? Something that is pretty gripping and easy to get through :)

Thanks so much lovely MNetters

The Beekeeper of Aleppo is great, another vote for the Midnight Library. I’m listening to ‘The Last thing he told me’ at the moment which is really good tio

Pinkylemons · 24/05/2021 15:47

Three hours by Rosalind Lipton. The giver of stars by jo jo moyes. The silent patient. It’s hard as everyone likes different things.

supercalifragilistic123 · 24/05/2021 15:51

I've just finished the new Andy Weir book (the author of the Martian) Project Hail Mary, I would definitely recommend it. I really enjoyed it!

@Catswithflamingos

Sorry totally missing the point but Scribd is amazing. It is like Audible but has ebooks and audiobooks. None of this credit nonsense - listen to as many books as you want. It’s the same cost
I love scribd but they just don't have the same catalogue as audible. Apparently some authors are tied into audible for publishing deals.

Wow, so many suggestions!! Thank you so much 💓

I've been massively enjoying 'The Mirror and the Light' which is the last in the Wolf Hall series. The narration is fantastic.

If you like fantasy, The Name of the Wind trilogy is brilliant and, again, the narration is superb.

I enjoy the Jack Reacher novels on audible, too.

ON the topic of fantasy, sadly the narrator chosen for Robin Hobb is really bad. Shame.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/05/2021 16:16

The sequel to six of crows is in the £3 sale. I was listening to it the other night and didn't mind the narrator.

PerveenMistry · 24/05/2021 16:19

That new airline thriller Falling is releasing soon; should be interesting.

I like the mysteries by Sujata Massey set in 1920s Mombai.

Michael Connelly series of Lincoln Lawyer is good. Especially enjoyed most recent one, Law of Innocence.

Connelly's other recent books featuring detectives Bosch & Ballard are good too.

Body in the Library anthologies narrated by Alistair from As Time Goes By are well done.

Edna Buchanan's Britt Montero series is good. Start with Contents Under Pressure then Margin of Error.

pepsicolagirl · 24/05/2021 16:27

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue had me hooked! I may even go and give it a second listen

Also really enjoyed Mythos and Heroes

Bitconfused75 · 24/05/2021 16:30

I loved Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart
Yes to Rivers of London series
Any Peter James or Peter May
Mythoes or Heroes by Stephen Fry
Any Stuart McBride books (in fact any tartan noir - love the accents)
And Educated by Tara Westover

WyldStallions · 24/05/2021 16:49

Strike series by JK Rowling
Helen Fielding "perfect" series if you can handle a fair bit of crime detail
Shuggie Bain
Bitter Orange - very atmospheric and beautifully written
Invisible Women - but only if you don't mind getting v angry!

TrojaninTroy · 24/05/2021 16:52

Olive Kitteridge & Olive Again by Elizabeth Strout. She makes it ok to be cranky.

TrojaninTroy · 24/05/2021 16:53

Also, An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. Very topical.

UniversalAunt · 24/05/2021 17:57

Any suggestions for a 14yo girl who does not like reading, but might once she’s heard a compelling story?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/05/2021 18:00

I know I've already mentioned it, but Montmorency. Especially if she liked Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter. The writing is a lot better (love the stories of Harry Potter but not necessarily the language).

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 24/05/2021 18:09

A Walk in The Woods by Bill Bryson make sure it's this one, narrated by him its really entertaining as well as interesting!

I also enjoyed Mythos read by Stephen Fry

PrincessMonacoOfKent · 24/05/2021 20:29

Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh - a great courtroom thriller www.audible.co.uk/pd/Thirteen-Audiobook/B077SZ6VW2.
It's the fourth in the series, but you definitely don't have to have read the first three.

mrsrupertpenryjones · 24/05/2021 21:06

Science fiction!

Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. (Its a three part series, full cast so more like a play. )

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

TheMotherlode · 24/05/2021 21:34

Some that I’ve enjoyed recently:

  • Michelle Obama - Becoming
  • Bill Bryson - The Body
  • Stephen Fry - Mythos
  • Tara Westover - Educated
  • Trevor Noah - Born a Crime
TheMotherlode · 24/05/2021 21:46

You can pause it again if you have a month in between. I keep losing my credits. It took me a while to figure out you couldn't accumulate more than 6

@DDIJ oh bugger, I had no idea you couldn’t accumulate more than 6. I stopped buying new audiobooks when I started working from home and assumed they would just accumulate until I was ready. Can’t believe they just still take the money every month for nothing Confused

GromblesOfGrimbledon · 24/05/2021 21:47

I like books!
I like listening to books!

The Madness of Crowds- Douglas Murray
The Coddling of the American Mind- Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianhoff
Beyond Order- Jordan Peterson

Books books books 📚

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 24/05/2021 21:47

The Rivers of London. I used to go for night walks listening to it during last lockdown. Was great.

luxurychocolate · 24/05/2021 21:48

@CarolandDarryl

Oh and unnatural causes by Dr Richard Shepherd a criminal forensic pathologist. He conducted many high profile post mortems and gives a fascinating (to me 😂) insight into it all.
This one
WisestIsShe · 24/05/2021 21:56

Yet another vote for the Rivers of London series. They are the stories with the most perfectly matched narrator ever.
