To think I'll lose weight on gousto?

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 18:25

Just received my first gousto box. I am a size 16/18 and 5ft 4 with about 5 - 6 stone to lose. I also have type 2 diabetes.

I have been reading the fast 800 book and so my plan is to just eat one meal a day these being the gousto meals. It's just easiest for me so I'm not at the shops being tempted.

The only thing is, the fast 800 book recommends a Mediterranean diet, some of the gousto meals have carbs in it. For instance one of my meals had 67g of carbs. But as that's all I'm eating all day that should be okay shouldn't it?

I used to have the gousto meals but stopped when dieting, although there are a few calorie controlled options, the majority are quite high in calories/carbs. Taste delicious though but wouldn’t describe as diet friendly

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 18:32

@DaisyLilyFlower but if that's all I'm eating?

The bottom line is, if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you'll lose weight.

A key thing is to figure out how many calories you burn per day even if you do nothing but... live (your BMR): www.calculator.net/bmr-calculator.html

If your BMR is, say 1600 calories, eating under 1600 calories will result in weightloss, irrespective if those calories are super healthy, keto, or entirely mars bars in baps.

MyNameForToday1980 · 23/05/2021 18:38

I went from a adult-lifelong size 16/18 to a size 12 at 5ft 5 by limiting to 1200 calories a day. It was sometimes boring, sometimes hard, it took around 8-9 months - but it worked.

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 18:40

Thank you, using that calculator it says my BMR is 1674 so as long as I eat under that I will lose? I am very inactive also. I just wasn't sure as with type 2 diabetes you're basically told that carbs are the enemy so I wasn't sure if it was okay to include them in my one meal a day.

@MyNameForToday1980 well done on your weight loss also!

I know of two people who have recently lost weight on Gousto, apparently they have some really tasty meals. If you are doing one meal a day and drinking lots of water then surely you will see weight loss but you might need to eat a bit more?

Blowingagale · 23/05/2021 18:42

Presumably you can. I lost with weight watchers. However I didn’t stick with it and put weight on again. What is your longer term plan? Also how are going to not feel hungry and then maybe splurge?

romdowa · 23/05/2021 18:43

Are you on anything medication for your diabetes? If you are then I wouldn't try only eating once a day as you could end up going hypo.

Crunchymum · 23/05/2021 18:45

Size 16-18 but want to lose 5-6 stone?

How small do you want to be? Shock

You eat under tdee not bmr really
zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 18:49

@romdowa I'm on lowest dose of metformin. I have fasted quite a lot the past few months and have had no ill effects. Actually the author of the fast 800 reversed his type 2 diabetes doing so.

@Crunchymum yes, I am currently around 15 stone 7 and so would be happy at 10 stone however really happy at 9 stone 7 which is what I was 4 years ago.

Fair dos.

I am similar(ish) height and weight but can't get near a size 16 Shock

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/05/2021 18:53

If you have type 2, speak to someone before embarking on diets like this. With any health problem actually. It's safer and they will be able to advise on how to best manage for you personally

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 18:55

@Crunchymum a lot of people say I don't look my weight but I carry a lot of it in my chest/face etc whilst my legs alone could squeeze into a 14, my belly is a 16 and 18 on bad days.

I’ve been on a calorie controlled diet for just over 2 months (1200 calories a day) and have been including “hello fresh” boxes in this, I’ve just chosen the lower calorie options and had smaller lunches etc - I’ve lost 20lb in about 10 weeks so definitely possible.

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 18:58

@ceeveebee well done that's amazing! I'm feeling really motivated right now. Has hello fresh got healthier options?

Everydayiwakeupanditsmonday · 23/05/2021 19:02

I think 67g carbs is quite a lot in one meal for someone with diabetes. Maybe you could swap some of the carbs if that would work eg if it’s pasta swap half the pasta for courgetti? Or half rice for half cauliflower rice? But as pp have said I would check with your diabetes nurse first. Have you read Michael Mosley’s blood sugar diet book? It has a few recipes in and there is a recipe book to go with it too.

listsandbudgets · 23/05/2021 19:03

I love Gousto, but their portions are usually huge. We often find we have enough for an extra meal.

Personally, I'd not be happy on one meal a day and I would have thought that with diabetes, you'd want to keep your sugar levels steady?

I've been losing weight slowly since August and find it much better with 3 meals a day. Today for example I had scrambled egg on toast, chicken stew, potato wedges and a pile of veg and I'm about to have a can of soup and some fruit for dinner (DP is low carbing so he replaced the potato wedges with mix bean salad)

Hellohellohowareyou · 23/05/2021 19:04

I went from the same weight as you 15.5st to 11.5 by calorie counting 1600-1800 a day, Gousto or hello fresh for evening meal. Used my fitness pal to track it all and exercised 3-4 times a week mixture of cardio and weights. For me it worked as if I knew I had a nice meal to look forward to in the evening it kept me in control.

Gained a bit back by being a lazy mare during lockdown when gyms were shut and enjoyed far too many takeaways but I know what I need to do so drop it again

OnlyBejoking · 23/05/2021 19:06

I'm just trying hello fresh to compare with Gousto. It seems quite similar in terms of choice.

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 19:07

@listsandbudgets fasting is the best way to keep blood sugar levels steady throughout the day, it's eating that spikes them. Fasting has been scientifically proven to help people with a whole host of different health issues. Also I have tried 3 meals, 5 small meals etc throughout the day. It just doesn't work for me. I like fasting as it takes away the element of having to think about food and it's cheaper too.

Apologies I didn’t notice the type 2 diabetes part. Whatever you do I hope it works out for you Smile

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 19:09

@Everydayiwakeupanditsmonday yes the book I am reading the fast 800 is by Michael Mosley, really interesting. That's a good idea actually to split the carbs. It is a bit carb heavy.
