To think I'll lose weight on gousto?

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 18:25

Just received my first gousto box. I am a size 16/18 and 5ft 4 with about 5 - 6 stone to lose. I also have type 2 diabetes.

I have been reading the fast 800 book and so my plan is to just eat one meal a day these being the gousto meals. It's just easiest for me so I'm not at the shops being tempted.

The only thing is, the fast 800 book recommends a Mediterranean diet, some of the gousto meals have carbs in it. For instance one of my meals had 67g of carbs. But as that's all I'm eating all day that should be okay shouldn't it?

Yes this is essentially what I do. I try to fast roughly and only eat one meal a day. We do Gousto delivery for 4 meals as we are lazy! The trick is not to go mental eating stuff outside of that meal!

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 19:11

I find if I was to have breakfast, even scrambled egg and smoked salmon, I'm starving all day and constantly thinking of my next meal and it's really mentally exhausting.

I have a family member who reversed his t2 diabetes using an ultra low cal diet - but he had support from GP before and throughout. Please don't do this without consulting a medical professional first. It's fine to fast when you are 100% healthy but if you have any serious health issues you absolutely must get medical advice beforehand.
The NHS is generally supportive of this type of eating, so don't expect them to just poo-poo the idea. If it's safe for you to do it they will be able to support you.

The best thing is to plan your meals whether that is through gusto or making it yourself. If you plan ahead you’re less like to snack or binge when you’re bored or feeling down.

I’m the opposite I usually eat one meal a day but trying to force myself to have 3 small meals a day to lose weight but I am like you that I find it easier to just have one.

Overrunwithlego · 23/05/2021 19:20

Hmmm. I lost 2.5. Stone following the blood sugar diet. That was September - November last year, and I’ve easily kept the weight off (in fact continue to lose weight, even though I’m not trying to). For me though the secret was getting rid of the carbs and ensuring my meals were more fat and protein based. They whole point of the BSD / fast 800 etc is that you stop the carb sugar high and lows which cause the constant snacking / desire for more. That meant that even on 800 calories I rarely felt that hungry, whereas if I’ve previously tried to watch what I eat by purely calorie counting I’ve found it really hard - I’d think about food all the time!

So in my experience, trying to only have one Gousto meal a day, if it’s quite carby, won’t work. Once you get the sugar crash you’ll just crave food again. And there is only so will power you can have.

Whilst I will occasionally have sweet treats, I really could take them or leave them now. It really is liberating to not feel a slave to food / sugary treats. My tastes have completely changed - I now really like dark chocolate for example, which previously I found too bitter. And if I do have more carby food whilst out for a meal for example, I really notice how much worse I feel afterwards.

Anyway, that’s my experience!

This is the second Thread today on Gousto, anyone would think they were advertising it!!

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 19:33

@SakuraEdenSwan1 where's the other one?

Low carb is considered to be anywhere between 100- 150g of carbs per day so you should be ok keto is less than 20 per day x

Movinghouseatlast · 23/05/2021 20:13

Have you looked at Mindful Chef instead? It is very low carb, and uses no dairy.

The meals are fantastic.

berryhead2013 · 23/05/2021 20:14

I'm a type one diabetic and the team at my hospital are all behind the lower carb way of eating I'm presuming your not in insulin as that changes things slightly but if it's just metformin you should be ok as that just makes your insulin work more efficiently x

ceeveebee · 23/05/2021 20:22
@ceeveebee well done that's amazing! I'm feeling really motivated right now. Has hello fresh got healthier options?
I haven’t tried fous to so can’t compare but hello fresh has several options for less than 500 or 600 calories, and i tend to have just fruit and coffee for breakfast, chicken and salad for lunch and a hello fresh meal in the evening to stick within the 1200 calories.

ceeveebee · 23/05/2021 20:23

Fous! I meant Gousto

Foxhasbigsocks · 23/05/2021 20:25

Watch out op! Gousto only include the provided ingredients in the calorie info. Eg I made a dish the other day where two items were cooked in olive oil and veg oil (which you provide yourself) and two Tbs of butter to be added and flour as well. None of that was counted in the calories as those bits weren’t provided by Gousto. So the end dish is often more calorific than the number they give.

So eg any sugar in the dish is always provided by me and also never counted!

Foxhasbigsocks · 23/05/2021 20:26

We’ve just paused Gousto as dp feels they are stopping him losing weight

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 20:52

@Movinghouseatlast yes I've had a look, looks amazing but I can't afford it unfortunately Sad

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 20:53

@Foxhasbigsocks thanks for that. I am planning to log everything in my fitness pal. Will be interesting to see how accurate the recipe calories is

Im also type 2 and have started fasting.Like you once i eat breakfast, thats it game over.

The only thing is can you really live on only 1 meal a day.
I was in a group where omad was a thing but they didnt have underlying problems.I think you need to have a chat with your dr and find out if its ok to do.

SkyBlueKitchen · 23/05/2021 22:23

Mindful Chef is healthier as a PP said. I only use them when I have a discount though as like you, find them pricey. I do have a referral code that gives you a discount if you want it.

Good luck in any case! I'm starting Fast 800 too as it happens!

lucy5236 · 23/05/2021 22:32

There's a similar company called "mindful chef" with healthy options. Good luck OP Thanks

zekeandcamille · 23/05/2021 22:36

@SkyBlueKitchen yeah that would be fab thank you! Are you doing low carb ?

I've just looked at my three gousto for this week, every one is less than 500 calories per portion, most around 450 mark. Is that enough food to only eat that all day? Seems crazy low.

motogogo · 23/05/2021 22:49

The crucial thing is portion control, I have found meals kits help me with this but you need to watch the oil you use. It would be healthier to eat around 1200 calories a day and do 30 mins-hour exercise ideally getting you heart rate up so if not running, fast walking, uphill walking.

I would suggest the hairy dieters book for inspiration

BillyTodd · 23/05/2021 23:08

@MyNameForToday1980

The bottom line is, if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you'll lose weight.

A key thing is to figure out how many calories you burn per day even if you do nothing but... live (your BMR): www.calculator.net/bmr-calculator.html

If your BMR is, say 1600 calories, eating under 1600 calories will result in weightloss, irrespective if those calories are super healthy, keto, or entirely mars bars in baps.

This advice is terribly out of date these days, and bonkers to say it on a thread where the OP is diabetic!
nomorehiccups · 23/05/2021 23:17

If it's all you are eating you should lose weight. Be careful though - some of the meals are quite high in calories.

BillyTodd · 23/05/2021 23:18

I've just started Gousto last week, and these are my thoughts too, as all of my meals this week were 450-500 calories. That's very much not very many calories, I think you'd be terribly hungry and tired doing this. Gousto sell in portions of 2 or 4, so do you mean you'd be eating a portion for 2 in one serving? so 900-1000 or 1200 calories say if as others says the calorie count doesn't include things you add at home (thanks for the heads up on that one!). A Gousto portion for 2 is HUGE - I've got a big appetite and I am having to watch myself because one portion of some of their meals is too much for me to be comfortably full at the end of it. I think if you ate a portion for 2 you'd feel bloated, gross and need to go and have a lie down - all of which isn't great for metabolising that food into energy for you to actually live on. I think you'd feel gross and lethargic on one meal a day of gousto food - either because you'd be having way too few calories to supply your body with energy and sufficient nutrition for 24 hours, or because you'd be eating a massive amount of food in the evenings. I'm not against fasting, and I love Gousto, but I just can't see how the two together will work for you.
