Day-lee-a

See also Aunt Dahlia in the PG Wodehouse Wooster books. In every dramatisation or reading I've seen or heard, it's Day-lee-a

di2004 · 23/05/2021 18:56

Day lee a

WeCameToDance · 23/05/2021 19:02

Dah Leah
It’s my absolute favourite name and I was desperate to name dd it but dh couldn’t get past the murder association. My sister is going to use it if she ever has a girl though!

cariadlet · 23/05/2021 19:03

I've always said Day-lee-uh but read the Wikipedia entry posted earlier. It seems that the flower is named after a Swedish naturalist called Dahl. Presumably he pronounced his name in the same way as Roald Dahl who had a Norwegian backtound.

That meant that I've been saying it wrong all my life and it should be Dar-lia.

But it's too much like Daaarling for me to pronounce it in what must be the correct way. I'd feel too pretentious. It would be like doing a Hyacinth Bucket.

LuluJakey1 · 23/05/2021 19:05

Our favourite local garden centre which is an international renowned specialist for growing and developing types of Dahlias, pronounces them Daylia if that is any help.

AuntieStella · 23/05/2021 19:06

Day-lee-yuh

Like the flower

(No-one pronounces camellia or Everest like the surname, it's far from unique in modifying in normal usage)

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 23/05/2021 19:12

Bertie Wooster’s aunt Dahlia was Day-lia, in all the adaptations I’ve seen. And the one real-life person I’ve known was the same.

Most people will pronounce it how they pronounce the flower, so if the majority use ‘Day-‘ then that’s how it’ll be.

YouLookSoCool · 23/05/2021 19:16

Dar-lia

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 23/05/2021 19:20

Dah lia. That is how Klaus pronounces it in the originals, therefore it is totally correct and I will not entertain it being pronounced any other way.

Name - Dar-Lia

horsemadgal · 23/05/2021 19:32

I say dal-ya Blush

DeflatedGinDrinker · 23/05/2021 19:34

Well I know 3 Dahlias. Said as its spelt. Which isn't Daylia.

Psychonabike · 23/05/2021 19:39

I'm Scottish -only ever heard people say Dah-lia. Day-lia sounds incredibly English to me. But when people say "UK" or "British" that's usually what they actually mean anyway.

When MIL (English) visits, and we talk about the garden she would always say "Day-lia" which sounds incredibly wrong to my ears.

CasperGutman · 23/05/2021 19:43

@Sideofnoreturn

Dayliah, like the plants
What, you mean the word "Dahlia" could mean something else?
sausagepastapot · 23/05/2021 19:46

DAAH lee yah, South East.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 23/05/2021 19:48

It’s for a middle name, but we’re not sure if we want to use it if people would pronounce it daylia as we really don’t like that.

No one is ever going to call your child by their second name,

zingally · 23/05/2021 19:49

Dar-lee-a.

caringcarer · 23/05/2021 19:51

Day Lee a like the flower.

Onlinedilema · 23/05/2021 19:54

Day Lee ah like the flower.

GirlCrush · 23/05/2021 19:58

day-lia

i work in a garden centre and NO customer has ever asked for or discussed an daah-lia

MilduraS · 23/05/2021 20:08

Daaaah-lia. When I first heard the word I was living in the US and the Black Dahlia movie came out. I've only recently heard the correct pronunciation on gardeners world but I can stop saying it the American way.

Cryalot2 · 23/05/2021 20:13

Day lee ah or Day lia
All versions sound lovely.
Where you live depends on how it will be pronounced.

tiredanddangerous · 23/05/2021 20:27

I only know it as Dar lee a. I've never heard the day pronunciation.
