Protester are blockading Maccies distribution centres to try and get them to commit to be fully plant based by 2025.

Now I cansee the argument about meat production affecting the environment but.......McDonalds sell what people want to eat! They are a business and are not going to agree to do something that could decimate their customer base!

And this kind of protest just pisses people off, if you want to take the kids for a maccies on the way home from shopping because you cba to cook then finding out that they have no food in then you are hardly going to feel very well disposed to the people who have caused it are you?

To be honest, I wish McDonald's did Gluten Free options. This I would do a protest for.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/05/2021 19:23

@WomenAreBornNotWorn

Curious Millions of pounds worldwide are being spent, scientists are moving forward with better ideas on sustainability, replacing meat with better healthier options. This is all happening.

But we vote with our feet and the meat industry is well supported by the public and bailed out annually by the government.

Not everyone can fund a plant based start up or go to university to get there PHD. But things are going in the right direction. Everyone does their bit. I go to a silent vigil outside local slaughter houses every monday. It doesnt change anything I know that, but it would be nice how learn how to be less annoying though. I'm aware I piss people off. Grin

Oh stop! Yes it does piss me off a bit. Not because you want to effect change, but you are being a bit, erm, blinkered. Like you are arguing with me even though I have not posted absolutely against the idea... just the lack of current practicality!

For example, I said some become scientists to work on real soultions - part of your answer is not everyone can afford to.

But I also said others make changes and do things more quietly. Some take off, Meat free Mondays etc!.

So you piss off people who work for almost minimum wage by staring at them as they enter or leave work? OK! You are right, it doesn't change anything. But every member of staff and their families will become ardently against you and your stance. So why do it?

Why not do something positive, that is an actual action rather than amn utterly Pass Agg behaviour?

Veganise common recipes, make them tasty, spread them round all SM, local shops etc.

Blog about it, including local shops that sell ingredients etc.

ANYTHING that is positive and could make a real change.

And yes, I do. Just not with vegan recipes. I write for the slowly dying high street where I live. I write them based on the local, family run shops we have here, butcher, baker, chandler and farm shop! Local clothes shop gets a shout out too! Best thing about it? It works! With various recommendations, special offers etc we can measure how much it is working.

I am probably as passionate about local businesses as you are about veganism. But I chose not to berate but to help educate!

PegPeople · 22/05/2021 19:28

I think that's the crux of it. Stopping the distribution for 24 hours does absolutely nothing to the bottom line for McDonald's, it won't cause them to change and in all honesty the targets set by the group are absolutely unobtainable even if Mcdonalds wanted to become plant based.

All it does is hurt the little people who just want to go to work, make a honest wage and do their jobs. That's the people this sort of protest hurts.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 19:28

CuriousaboutSamphire

As a vegan though, if you do anything to educate, you’re called ‘preachy’....so we can’t win really.

Thesearmsofmine · 22/05/2021 19:31

YANBU
I eat meat and am interested in eating less of it, I follow people on social media who are vegan/veggie and regularly share their meals, seeing their food that looks appealing makes me want to try them too(and eat less meat). Seeing people protesting in this way just makes me decide to take my kids to McDonald’s this week and I’m sure that I’m not alone in this.
I feel sorry for the staff impacted by these idiots who instead of doing something useful have decided to cause issues.

WomenAreBornNotWorn · 22/05/2021 19:40

Curious I don't want to anger you anymore than you appear to be. Apologies for killing your high street....

flowerycurtain · 22/05/2021 19:52

Totally agree.

Not afraid of learning more about veganism and eating less meat but this is not the way to engage with me.

Talk to my Union (the NFU) and get some farmer based training going on. Show me how to grow my crops without relying upon Nitrogen and maintaining yields that have a chance of feeding our nation let alone the world.

Shine a light on foreign agricultural practices that are illegal in this country because they are so damaging to the environment.

Help me invest my pension in science companies working on lab based meat.

Love the comment above that every choice has a consequence. I have a lot or respect for genuine vegans that eat natural, local seasonal food that keeps them healthy.

Help the rest of us do that on a realistic budget that feeds kids whilst working 2 x full time jobs and your onto a winner. Just don't stop me getting a mcd's for my kids when I'm knackered as that really won't engage me.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 19:59

But this group isn’t about making individuals change, they’re very open about that.

PegPeople · 22/05/2021 20:04

But they clearly won't get Mcdonalds to change either even if they wanted to go 100% plant based it still wouldn't happen before the deadline set by the group.

So exactly what's the point in the protests and why do they think this is a good strategy, have strategies like this ever changed anyones opinion?

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 20:09

I’m not their spokesperson 😬 so honestly, I don’t know. I’m just pointing out that all these people saying ‘they won’t make me change’ ..,, they’re not trying to change individuals. They work at trying to change things further up. Presumably they feel their way works/ has worked as that’s why they do it.

Messedupneedchocolatenow · 22/05/2021 20:16

@Xyzzzzz

Fully plant based? No thanks. I’m all for people being able to eat what they want but that goes both ways.
this.

I am finding this current evangelical brand of veganism v tedious. I am all for having more plant based food around and am considering flexitarianism but the hype around how we need to stop all animal produce is getting silly.

This would be much more effective approach. I could certainly get on board with this.
HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 22/05/2021 20:17

Fuck that! McDonald's is the only burger I actually like

Penistoe · 22/05/2021 20:31

These type of people rarely care deeply enough for the issue. They are just narcissists who have convinced themselves they care. They will annoy people and encourage people to go to MacDonald’s just to annoy them. You can’t force change it absolutely won’t work.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 20:37

Do you know them? The people I know involved in this group and other groups most definitely care about climate change and animal welfare.

They will annoy people and encourage people to go to MacDonald’s just to annoy them.

This has been said a lot on this thread. It’s very childlike, most people stop with that sort of mentality when they’re kids. I couldn’t cope with adults in my life who have that thought process.

anon12345678901 · 22/05/2021 20:38

The only thing this protest is making me want to do, is have a McDonalds 😂
I love meat, I won't stop eating it regardless of others opinions.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 20:41

And another one. 🤪

Childlike? The same could be said of the protesters lying in the road having a hissy fit over something they don't agree with. Sounds a lot like a toddler throwing themself onto the floor to have a tantrum.

anon12345678901 · 22/05/2021 20:44

It's not childlike but you can call it that because it makes you feel better. It's actually that I haven't had it in ages and now this protest is reminding me I like it. Not all protests work the way you want 😉

The huge and very important difference is they are doing it because they feel it will help their cause and bring about change. People on here have said that they will have a McDonald’s just to annoy these protestors....so yes, a very childish mentality.
One person even said that they wanted to reduce their meat intake but will now go to McDonalds... utterly pathetic.

It is childlike. It doesn’t make me feel better to say it, how would it make me feel better that such petty people exist.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 20:59

This particular group are not trying to make individuals make change, that’s not what this protest is for.

Definately · 22/05/2021 21:00

I actually think the protestors have a bit of a point - McDonald's could try a bit harder to make a decent range of veggie alternatives, all the other fast food chains have managed it. I now eat meatless meatballs at Subway instead of meat because they taste really good, and I'm not vegetarian.

anon12345678901 · 22/05/2021 21:01

@KaleSlayer

This particular group are not trying to make individuals make change, that’s not what this protest is for.

But they are trying to force McDonald's to change, in which case the awareness comes that you so desperately want (otherwise you wouldn't do it) And then people decide to vote with their feet to McDonald's so they don't make this change. So yes not all protests work the way you want.
