Protester are blockading Maccies distribution centres to try and get them to commit to be fully plant based by 2025.

Now I cansee the argument about meat production affecting the environment but.......McDonalds sell what people want to eat! They are a business and are not going to agree to do something that could decimate their customer base!

And this kind of protest just pisses people off, if you want to take the kids for a maccies on the way home from shopping because you cba to cook then finding out that they have no food in then you are hardly going to feel very well disposed to the people who have caused it are you?

I remember a food critic being criticised a year or so ago for saying “vegans should be killed” (William Sitwell).

This has just created a posse to achieve that

Castlepeak · 22/05/2021 17:48

McDonald’s will follow the profits. Their new chicken sandwiches in the US are strictly because of the chicken sandwich “wars” there.

Create an effective plant based chain and McDonald’s will jump on the market. They might go in under a different brand name to start, but they will fight for market share.

WomenAreBornNotWorn · 22/05/2021 17:51

Curious Even if I came up with a swiss army knife of solutions, I couldn't make people do it. Neither should I. Anything I say would be ridiculed and have folk running to the nearest McDonald's to 'spite' me. We can feed trillions of animal's while humans are starving and struggle to gain access to clean water. So no, I don't have the answers. But what's happening atm isn't working so great either.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 17:54

It’s such a childish and pathetic attitude, there’s been some of it on this thread already.

ParadiseLaundry · 22/05/2021 18:07

These types of protests do little for me except to make me intensely crave a McDonalds. And I haven't had McDonalds for years!

When I was younger I was handing out flyers for a local business in the street opposite a Burger King and some protesters turned up with a big banner saying 'MEAT IS MURDER!' In red, dripping writing that looked like blood. Honestly, I probably hadn't long stopped being a vegetarian and hadn't even had any burger chain food at all.... the first thing I did when I was finished working was to was to walk right past them into BK and buy a burger. The blood just looked so delicious! I had been doing the same job for about a week before hand and had never even thought of going in there.

SunIsComing · 22/05/2021 18:13

I’m off to get a MacDonald’s. And I’ll be raise a juicy burger on toast to the deluded numbskulks.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 18:15

These protesters are pathetic, and need to get a fucking job. Who the fuck do they think they are, telling people what they can and can't eat? I bet these kind of wankers are the type who expect you to bend over backwards to accommodate them and their precious vegan food requests, but would never EVER return the favour when a non-vegan visits them, because it's against their 'beliefs.'

I know people involved in this group and other animal rights groups. They all work.

You sound a bit worked up.

ufucoffee · 22/05/2021 18:27

Rarely use McDonald's but those idiots have made me want to use them more

felineflutter · 22/05/2021 18:27

I am not a Vegetarian but there is something distasteful about calling a childrens meal a happy meal when an animal has just been slaughtered.

My point was that the majority of people who make the loudest, and daftest, of protests never do have any kind of solution, road map or even viable first step.

Meanwhile the quieter ones set about making small changes that do add up. Others become the scientists that can model the changes required.

I don't care what you actually do, nor do I care if you want to hide behind "anything I say will be ridiculed". I do care that conspicuous eco warriorism gets any kind of kudos when it is all self absorbed flummery. If they actually DID something that paved the way for change we'd probably all join them!

VeganCheesePlease · 22/05/2021 18:33

I'm mainly plant based and I agree with you totally. I can't stand sanctimonious vegans. This type of thing does not get people on your side.

LangClegsInSpace · 22/05/2021 18:39

Also, I agree with the posters saying they don't understand why it's always McDonalds that get bashed.

Probably because of the McLibel trial

There's a really good documentary you can stream or download for a few quid here:

Curious Millions of pounds worldwide are being spent, scientists are moving forward with better ideas on sustainability, replacing meat with better healthier options. This is all happening.

But we vote with our feet and the meat industry is well supported by the public and bailed out annually by the government.

Not everyone can fund a plant based start up or go to university to get there PHD. But things are going in the right direction. Everyone does their bit. I go to a silent vigil outside local slaughter houses every monday. It doesnt change anything I know that, but it would be nice how learn how to be less annoying though. I'm aware I piss people off. Grin

littlepattilou · 22/05/2021 18:49

@WomenAreBornNotWorn

If these protesters trigger people to go to McDonald's, then what would they like to hear that would open then up to a plant based diet? What could we possibly say to change your mind?

Nothing. Because it's got fuck-all to do with you, OR any other nosey, stickybeak vegan what I eat.

HTH. Smile

littlepattilou · 22/05/2021 18:50

@WomenAreBornNotWorn

It's been done before. It takes 11 bathtubs full of water to make just one hamburger patty

What a load of hyperbole, and exaggerated bullshit, and typical of the manipulative propaganda that vegan extremists come out with. It does not take 11 bathtubs of water to make just one hamburger patty. Hmm

You google this bullcrap, 'how much water does it take to make a hamburger patty' and you get many different answers ranging from 350 gallons of water, to 800 gallons of water, to 1800 gallons of water, to 2400 gallons of water. It's just made-up crap, perpetuated by the militant vegans.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 18:55

Equally, this group is allowed to protest. Wink

JM10 · 22/05/2021 18:57

I am vegan and in my ideal world no one would eat meat. When I saw this earlier I just thought it's not going to achieve anything other than turning some people more against vegans and any based foods.

I would also prefer to visit a plant based cage/restaurant/fast food place that is that way because they believe in it not because they were pressured into it. If McDonald's add more plant based options - great. Why would anyone feel they could force them to only offer this?

littlepattilou · 22/05/2021 18:57

Did I say they WEREN'T allowed to protest? Confused You can't just make shit up to suit your agenda you know. Wink

They can make tits of themselves all they like, they're still not going to fucking dictate to me what I can and cannot eat.

Now if all vegans had THIS attitude, I wouldn't be so angry and ranty about them. (And I may even consider eating SOME plant based stuff occasionally!)

I apologise to the genuinely nice and open minded vegans for the ranty generalisation. Some vegans like the poster here, are absolutely lovely. They live and let live. But some are absolutely infuriating. As you say @JM10 it's no good trying to force people to be like you.

If there's one thing many people hate - me included - it's being told what to do, (by people who think they're better than you,) and being told you should be a different person to what you are.

I have no problem with anyone protesting. However, blockading plants and preventing people going about their business is not lawful. it impacts both customers, and staff. Depending on their contracts, some staff might not get paid as a result of this action. In my experience such protestors are often well supported by their families and it is minimum wage workers who do not have good support networks who suffer.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 19:10

littlepattilou Well you did say,

These protesters are pathetic, and need to get a fucking job. Who the fuck do they think they are, telling people what they can and can't eat?

Who do they think they are? People with a right to protest is who they are. You seem to be taking this very personally and getting a bit stressed out.

And as I said earlier, the people I know involved in this group do work. So they have a ‘fucking job’. They also protest.

The police are at the protest. They will take any necessary action.

The protestors are there regarding animal rights/welfare, climate issues etc. They won’t be concerned about other issues you mention as their goal outweighs all that for them. Just as McDonald’s doesn’t have animal rights at the front of their minds, their concern is money.

KaleSlayer · 22/05/2021 19:19

I wish all vegans were this sensible

I wish all meat eaters were sensible too. This thread has unfortunately shown that they’re not. There’s good and bad in all walks of life.

newnortherner111 · 22/05/2021 19:21

I would be delighted if no-one ever went to McDonalds ever again. I don't want a loved one to have to wait longer in hospital or for a doctor's appointment because someone else has an illness or a medical condition resulting from obesity, which such fast food contributed towards. I dislike the amount of litter from their wrappings which may be able to be recycled, but still seem excessive.

However, the protest and its aims if anything are likely to end up with more sales at McDonalds.
