to put this unsolicited Avon catalogue in the recycling bin?

Came home to an Avon catalogue on the doormat. I didn't ask for it.

It has a note telling me to leave it our for collection on Sunday afternoon. The actual wording is "Leave this catalogue out on your doorstep for collection on Sunday afternoon EVEN IF YOU DONT WANT TO PLACE AN ORDER".
We're going away this weekend so I don't want to put it out tomorrow morning and have it lying there advertising the fact that we're not at home until Sunday afternoon.
The note says that if I can't put it out on Sunday afternoon I can call the person and arrange another time to collect it.

AIBU to just chuck it? I didn't ask for it, I don't want to phone a stranger up and arrange for her to collect it at a different time. Or will she come knocking on my door at some other random time looking for it? How long do I have to keep it lying around my house in case she comes back for it?

And who does she actually think she is to drop this off at my house then tell me in capital letters what to do with it?

And finally, why has this pissed me off out of all proportion

I understand that it’s a job and some people need the money etc but it’s a bit rich tp put something through someone’s letter box and then want it back. I guess that’s how Avon makes some of their money! I think the sooner people realise that it isn’t a job but a con, and the less people tolerate being spammed like this the sooner these practices can be outlawed.

MLM is abhorrent. It should be illegal in fact as it is essentially pyramid selling.

The more we stand up against it the less people will hopefully be sucked in.

PomegranateQueen · 21/05/2021 16:19

The sooner people realise these MLM schemes aren't profitable the better. Hopefully she stops after realising lots of catalogues don't get returned, before she wastes more money on lots of stock as 'samples' and yet more catalogues.

Icancelledthecheque · 21/05/2021 16:21

I get them from time to time and I always bin them.

Agree with you OP, don’t leave me crap I don’t want and then inconvenience me by wanting me to return it!

TheRebelle · 21/05/2021 16:23

Years ago I put a Kleeneze catalogue in the bin and the man knocked on the door and demanded 75p!

0hforfoxsake · 21/05/2021 16:25

I love a catalogue, but then I’m a Body Shop at Home consultant 🤣 (not impoverished but not buying a yacht anytime soon either).

Just put it in the recycling.

Rae36 · 21/05/2021 16:29

Can I just say again that if we hadn't been going away I would have put the book out on the doorstep on Sunday as she asked (if I remembered) and if I didn't remember I would have given it to her if she knocked on the door.

But I'm not going to be here. I don't live in the best of areas, my doorstep is quite visible from the street, the car will be gone, I can't think of anywhere less obvious to put it where she'll still find it, I feel weird about leaving it out overnight, potentially 2 nights if she doesn't come on Sunday.

I know some people on here think I'm weird for thinking an Avon catalogue is a sign of an empty house, some people agree with me. But now I've got the idea in my head I can't leave the book out just in case. It would pop into my head at odd times while I'm away.

So now I'm stuck with a booklet I didn't ask for and can't easily return and don't want to put in the bin because I am aware that someone has paid for it.

I'll hold on to it for a week and see if she knocks another time and asks. Or puts some other kind of message through the door on Sunday.

leave it out, what's the problem,we always used to,

TheVolturi · 21/05/2021 16:41

MAYBE the "shouty capitals" were not meant to be shouty but just to highlight the importance of handing the book back even if you aren't ordering, as they are passed on to other people?
Crikey 20 or 30 years ago this is exactly how Avon worked, were people so angry at the cheek of it then?
Note, I have absolutely no interest in Avon but I'd not be as wasteful as binning the book when it can be reused!

skybluee · 21/05/2021 16:47

I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving it out like that if I was going to be away either. It depends how obvious it is from the street really. Also everyone else might leave there's out and then if they're not picked up they take them in, but yours just sits there.

I think it's different if you're in - but you're not.

skybluee · 21/05/2021 16:48

theirs!

My mother reacted exactly like this 30 years ago. I remember her spotting the Avon lady trying to post the damn catalogue on the sly having been told we weren't interested. Mum chased her down the road to chuck it straight back at her.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/05/2021 16:52

Oh and it's even less wasteful to not produce a catalogue at all. There is a WEBSITE and almost no one who is posted the catalogue (unasked) even wants to buy anything from Avon anyway.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 21/05/2021 17:02

@VolcanicEruption

Apart from paying for the stupid catalogues, they are also trekking round estates. Whilst I appreciate people have had hard times lately but I thought the generous benefits took care of that.
Yes, I think most people in receipt of the generous benefits are rolling in it.
user1471538283 · 21/05/2021 17:03

Yes chuck it. I used to leave them out, send post on, be a good neighbour and it's got me nowhere. Now if anything isnt for me and mine it goes in the bin.

Mummytoonlychild · 21/05/2021 17:24

😂😂😂 brings back memories of the Avon lady who put one through my door and I even have a sign saying no unsolicited catalogues and they won't be returned.
She knocks at my door and asks for it back she got really cross when I said I threw it in the bin I ended up closing to door in her face when she stared to shout at me

In a pandemic?
TheVolturi · 21/05/2021 17:53

I bet you quarantine your mail don't you...

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 21/05/2021 17:57

I’d just leave it out with a note that you don’t want it again.

I often leave mine out on the allocated day and it ends up sat there for a few days before she collects it. No indication of whether or not I’m at home.

Streamside · 21/05/2021 18:37

I wouldn't even want to touch an Avon catalogue which may have gone through numerous households before getting to you

newnortherner111 · 21/05/2021 18:48

I think you would be within your rights to put it in the recycling bin and claim you did so as you were concerned about the spread of Covid. Or about the Avon representative having been at doors with people not wearing face coverings, then coming to you.

Lockheart · 21/05/2021 18:51

Firstly, If you can't afford to lose the catalogues, you shouldn't be putting them unsolicited through strangers' letterboxes where you have no control over what happens to it.

Secondly, it doesn't matter how down on their luck or hardworking someone is, spamming isn't acceptable.

ChairmansReserve · 21/05/2021 18:59

Too right, I'm not reimbursing anyone if they stick a catalogue through the door and the dog gets to it or a child turns it into a collage.

kowari · 21/05/2021 19:03

I've always just ignored them and left them where they are on the doorstep, I didn't think it was advertising I wasn't home Hmm.

CMZ2018 · 21/05/2021 19:05

Bin it or it encourages them
