Due to go camping tomorrow to Pooley bridge ulswater with family and 2 toddlers 3 and 1

Partner is not keen on going as the forecast looks pretty grim 😩 but I'm still keen to go? Is it just a recipe for disaster??

How bad is bad? I mean I wouldn’t go if it was thunder and lightning.

I wouldn’t go if it meant putting a tent up in the pissing rain with toddlers on the loose.

maxelly · 19/05/2021 17:08

@HoldingTheDoor

You only have one toddler because three year olds aren't toddlers, but yes you're crazy. Camping is insufferable enough in good weather. I can't imagine trying to keep two young children entertained in a tent on a rainy day.
Well the answer there is you don't, because there's very way little to entertain a toddler in a tent at any time (maybe they'll read a book or look at a phone/tablet for 10 mins but when that's out of juice or they're bored you're screwed!). So back in the dim and distant days of camping with little ones, my rule was pretty much they only go into the tent to sleep or rest - the rest of the time you either look for indoor activities (soft play/swimming/amusement arcade/garden centres some good ones, as well as lots of eating based activities) and/or you let them play/do activities outside in the rain and accept they're going to be dirty and damp - so it is vital to have good waterproofs and a big enough supply of dry clothes as well as being 'outdoorsy' enough as a family to not need lots of 'indoor' time for your sanity - but that applies as much to camping in the sunshine as it does in the rain so I assume OP's OK with that having planned to camp in the first place TBF!

I think you’d have a better time at home tbh. If it was a static caravan I’d say go for it but not a tent.

HoldingTheDoor · 19/05/2021 17:09

I'm kidding myself here aren't I

I think so, but you seem so desperate to go that perhaps you should.

Triphazard101 · 19/05/2021 17:12

We went camping to go to a wedding once - it was 13° , pissed with rain non stop for 23 hours Confusedand gale force winds. It was July!
I'm not sure id have enjoyed it with toddlers though.

ThreeFeetTall · 19/05/2021 17:14

Following this thread for tips as we are going this weekend with two under 5. When I booked it late May seemed like a good idea! At least with rain it is less cold at night than with clear skies [clutching at straws!]

Calmdown14 · 19/05/2021 17:16

Rain is manageable, wind less so. Is it Waterside house farm? Love that site. Park foot is bigger with more on site.
Make sure the kids have puddle suits and for getting up the tent in rain you either go full waterproofs or shorts and flip flops.
You can still go out and about during the day.
Unless it's very high winds I'd still go but then I love camping

Tossblanket · 19/05/2021 17:17

Go for it, no such thing as bad weather.

If it's a shocker come home and have a laugh about it.

giraffes2021 · 19/05/2021 17:22

@Calmdown14 yeah that's the one! We love it going 3 times this year!

We went camping in Scotland in the rain - no toddlers and it was still hell. It's a shame to miss out on the trip though - could you pack up and stay in a hotel if it got too much?

hparkins · 19/05/2021 17:27

I went to a festival a few years ago and it rained every day I was there. It was awful, I was cold, wet and everything was muddy.

personally I cant see what is remotely enjoyable about it, especially not with such young children but we are all different.

Nataliafalka · 19/05/2021 17:32

it sounds utterly hideous. Stay at home

Calmdown14 · 19/05/2021 17:39

Forecast doesn't look that bad. Worse Wednesday Thursday.
I'd phone before you go to check ground conditions perhaps.
Do you have electric hook up? Easier to dry things. A footprint for the tent is good in addition to the sewn in ground sheet but make sure it is totally tucked under otherwise you can get pooling between the two.
Micro fibre towels are also brilliant as they dry so much quicker and you don't have so much soggy stuff hanging about.
My favourite memories of camping as a child involve rain and puddles.

Exhausted4ever · 19/05/2021 17:39

It sounds like hell

MadMadMadamMim · 19/05/2021 17:39

You are brave! It sounds like my idea of hell, but I say go for it.

As your partner I might make the condition, If it's pissing down with rain, and I'm freezing cold and miserable then I reserve the right to give up and go home however.

Wrong thread reported myself sorry ..

I'd go camping ⛺️ at least for a few days, a change of scenery and some fresh air will be great. Had lovely hot sun for two hours after a shower here today.

Dozer · 19/05/2021 21:22

Urgh, agree with your DP, don’t go!

tv86 · 19/05/2021 21:32

Defiantly still go! We've being on a lot of camping trips where it has rained. the last one was august last year where we had a full 7 days of down pours. That wasn't so much fun, for me anyway. The kids still loved it. Plan some days out where you can be inside, swimming, soft plays, ect and then all get cosy together in the tent on an evening time. you will make fantastic memories and hearing rain on the tent at night is so refreshing.
you never know you may get some odd bits of nice weather. Was meant to be bad all day where I am but beside the odd shower it's being warm and sunny.

Sandsnake · 19/05/2021 21:36

How long were you planning on going for? Looking at the forecast I wouldn’t go tomorrow if I could help it, maybe leave till Friday if you can. Thursday looks like a nasty frontal system coming off the Atlantic, with high winds and likely torrential rain. Nightmare for pitching the tent. Friday may be a bit better as the front passes slowly but you can still expect high winds and a decent amount of rain, I think. Saturday looking ok though. Then rain again Sunday.

giraffes2021 · 19/05/2021 21:37

We've decided to pack up and then if it's really bad tomorrow going to just go Friday morning! Think tomorrow is meant to be the worst day! Plus we've got family going up in caravans so they can go up tomorrow and report back hahaha

I hope that the weather is kind to you and that you have a wonderful time.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 19/05/2021 21:39

With children that age, NO. YABU. I wouldn't join you in this. It will be miserable AF. I have to go walking in it tomorrow, but only for about 7 miles and it's on pavement and flat. But I wouldn't want to camp in this.

Heyha · 19/05/2021 21:39

Depends how experienced you are at camping and how good your kit is I think. I'm fair weather so prob wouldn't bother but we are sufficiently kitted and outdoors that if it does rain we can work round it. That was just with the dog though, haven't yet been able to try with DD who's coming up two, maybe this year?

Taliskerskye · 19/05/2021 21:41

Well you can always hang out in your families caravans! I mean the makes it seem doable!
I don’t mind being in the rain.
Packing up in the rain on the other hand Shock

But try as I might, I’m always packing in the rain
