‘With science I can have a baby whenever I want’’

Naomi Campbell had had a baby at 50 - not sure if she’s given birth or it’s a surrogate but her comments really irritated me. She said ‘with science I can have a baby whenever I want’ - do people actually think about the baby? I am sure she’ll be a lovely mum but it makes having a baby just sound like something to tick off on a list when you have decided you have had enough of everything else no matter what age you are. Maybe I am being harsh but if it’s that easy with science, why wait until you are 50?

No way is Naomi Campbell only 50.

lioncitygirl · 18/05/2021 23:57

She looks bloody amazing for 50 - jesus christ, she looks great!

Feelingconfused2020 · 19/05/2021 00:01

I have never liked Naomi Campbell she's always come across as selfish with that whole fur thing from years ago for example. However I don't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with being a mum at 50. I know dads who are far older. So I've voted YABU even though I sympathise with your dislike for her comment.

@jakeyboy1

It's not that simple for most people and that attitude is actually quite upsetting to people who have/are struggling.
Exactly.
SomethingOnce · 19/05/2021 00:10

If nothing else, I now don’t feel quite so aged carting this baby around at in my early forties Grin

Hadjab · 19/05/2021 00:13

@3AndStopping

She’s always been a bitch though hasn’t she... well known fact. So she probably only thinks about Naomi 🤷🏼‍♀️

It would be nice if people could keep out of women’s wombs…

Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.
My sentiments exactly!
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/05/2021 00:17

@Exhausted4ever tbf to her, plenty of people are diagnosed with things after they've had children much earlier. My friend died when her dc was 9.

JudgeJ · 19/05/2021 00:25

@LadyEggs

Well, good luck to her. She's going to be knackered.
Why? You don't seriously think she'll be doing all the messy stuff? Perfect pics only.
Notashandyta · 19/05/2021 00:26

Both mine and my husbands parents have overnight become frailer at 70.

A baby at 50 isn't ideal.

And for most mere mortals, not doable. For good reason.

Pottedpalm · 19/05/2021 00:26

Nah; she hasn’t given birth and she can afford a whole posse of nannies, etc.

THIS. ^

No-one - female OR male - should become a parent past the age of 42 IMO. Wrong on so many levels, and so selfish. No thought for the poor child at all.

I am disgusted with Naomi Campbell. Having a baby at 50? WTAF? Angry

Should be against the law.

timeisnotaline · 19/05/2021 00:30

It’s not that weird for dads to be dads at 50. Naomi Campbell is wealthy enough and I’m sure health focussed enough to have a better chance than most of being an active fit parent into her late 60s. It is of course with science and money.

nancy75 · 19/05/2021 00:31

@Hadjab, while I wouldn’t call her a bitch or any other names she’s definitely not a person of good character. She’s been convicted of assault a number of times (at least 4) and been accused of assault at least 11 times.

UnFringed · 19/05/2021 00:33

Think that should be amended to “thanks to science and wads of cash to buy another poor woman’s womb and health I can have a baby that will be toted as a nannied up accessory whenever I want.

But then I have no issues with judgement.

Providora · 19/05/2021 00:39

I agree, and that includes paying to rent them.

EmeraldShamrock · 19/05/2021 00:43

Everything has a price.
I hope she lives a long life for the baby.
I hope she has her past mishaps resolved too starting the tiresome thankless journey of motherhood.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 19/05/2021 00:54

The last post on her Instagram is her speaking to a 74 year old lady, the interview seems to be focusing on age, and she says she "surrounds myself with young people, over and over again, always". Maybe that's Naomi's plan too. Have a baby around to keep her young. Maybe I'm projecting but seems to be an odd idea that if you look young, you're somehow younger than your actual age. You're not.

My parents were older (middle - late 40s), and I had a happy childhood, but it's not ideal, especially as you both get older. From my own selfish point of view, I wish that they had been younger. I was jealous of friends with parents in their 20s and 30s when I was younger, as mine didn't want to do kids things (I'm the youngest of 3 and so age might not have had anything to do with that). And now I am sorely jealous of friends whose parents are in their 50s and 60s, active, babysit for them regularly, while I am worrying that mine won't be able to cope at home much longer.

So yep, I would say in Naomi Campbell's case it does seem a bit selfish to have a baby at 50. Why not just do it sooner, it's not like money is an issue, she could have afforded "the science" Confused before. Though I'm sure that there are plenty of men who become dads over 50 and no one bats an eye lid, but I suppose that their partner is at least 10 years younger. At least she has enough cash that her child won't be worrying about nursing home fees in 25 + years.

littlepattilou · 19/05/2021 01:27

The other Naomi Campbell thread has been deleted now. it was up to around 500 posts!

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/threads-im-watching

MN must have got fucked off with the constant reports and deletions.

The thread had more holes in it than a deep sea fishing net. It looked such a mess.

May21 · 19/05/2021 01:53

Naomi is so wealthy she’ll be able to get plenty of help raising her child, outsource lots of things etc. Also, her child won’t have financial issues so doubt they’ll be stressing over care fees later on or whatever. Admittedly, it’s sad that the child will likely lose their parents at an earlier age than most of their peers... but life is unpredictable.

Do the pp’s who think she is being selfish also think disabled and/or poor people are selfish for wanting to have children? I have a disability which has a shorter life expectancy on average, I genuinely wonder if that makes me selfish to want kids? Not every child will be brought up in a perfect household.

I think many of us ultimately want kids for ‘selfish’ reasons.

terfinginthevoid · 19/05/2021 02:08

I don’t think it’s right to buy a baby regardless of your age.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/05/2021 02:17

the woman who "chose" (I assume she had agency) to be the surrogate (allegedly)

And when very rich women offer to carry babies for poor people, I'll believe it's a free choice. Until then, no, I don't believe renting wombs is a great idea.

starrynight21 · 19/05/2021 02:29

@Exhausted4ever

Yanbu. There comes a point when it's just not fair on the kids. I mean at 75/80 she might require a lot of support and care at which point her kids barely finished uni and began adulthood
But people like her have a lot of cash to splash. At 25-30 her child will no doubt be very well endowed with education, money, privilege. Having an older mother might not be so terrible when you live in that world.
Italiangreyhound · 19/05/2021 03:03

But what are we going to do about all the men having babies at 50. They usually die younger than women so are we planning on stopping them!
