To think there should be one day a week when using power tools in the garden is prohibited?

I know I'm being totally unreasonable and that people have different work shifts and commitments that mean they have to do these jobs whenever they can fit them in... But for the love of Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey I'd love one day when I could sit out in the garden without Derek at number 33 cranking up his strimmer, or Colin at 46 breaking out the power washer.

Anyone else?

You could go round and offer to do it on a day that suits you?

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/05/2021 14:16

Lazy tools for inadequate people. My personal theory is that it has something to do with male insecurity in an ever-changing world. Or something.

Is this why my neighbour across the road polishes his motorhome every Sunday even though he hasn't taken it out since before the pandemic?

Good idea, but ask 7 neighbours and you'll get 7 different days.

😂😂😂

So you don't use a washing machine or an oven then for example??

I do. None of them go BBBBBRRRRROOOOOOOOMMMMMM loudly outside to signal my domestic labour. It's performance housework.

I'm biased because DH uses a push lawnmower shirtless and I'm shallow.

Fyredraca · 18/05/2021 14:22

Where I live (EU country) there is a day like that. It's called Sunday and you aren't allowed to mow your lawn, use power tools or generally make noise.
Also all the shops are closed.
Shift workers still manage to get things done.

OccaChocca · 18/05/2021 14:23

No, I think you should move to a house in the middle of nowhere with no neighbours.

Well yes, in an ideal world that would be the solution, but sadly my budget only extends to middle class suburbia.

My neighbours a couple of doors down are absolutely lovely people but the garden maintenance everyday is so annoying. They are retired with no children and very active. But they power wash their front and back garden everyday, it can be on for two hours. Autumn time is worse as they have they leaf blower out too.

Flappityflippers1 · 18/05/2021 14:33

If I hear another circular saw, it’s going to get rammed up someone’s arse, I’m sick of the sounds of the damn things!

They power wash every day?

Wow, if I do a half arsed power wash of my patio once a year I think I'm doing well.

I agree op. In the first lockdown the absolute silence was bliss, and I thought then that I wish there was a nationwide 'can we try not to be noisy on a Sunday 2pm-4pm' (for example) campaign.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/05/2021 14:35

I would wholesale ban leaf blowers. WTF are they for in a postage stamp sized garden?

Do they have any garden left if they’re power washing it every day? Confused Surely it’s not getting that dirty overnight!
Mammymar · 18/05/2021 14:40

@JocastaNu, yes everyday, starts at 10am. Their garden, home and car is absolutely spotless. I don't think they have anything else to do.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 18/05/2021 14:42

Yes op I'm with you. I wfh so constantly have the noise of this in my ear and as background to all my meetings. I'm sick of apologising for the noise in every meeting I join.

longtompot · 18/05/2021 14:52

Yanbu but I would prefer to have a day where you couldn't use any power tools like they do in Germany. No mowing or diy on a Sunday over there, or there was in the early 90s.
One of our neighbours is a 'gardener' and mows/strips/leaf blows his garden at least one day each a week, sometimes we get all three in one day. All petrol driven and all noisy af.
The other side is better, but they do things like noisy diy on Easter Sunday when you have family over for the first time since Christmas.
I do the mowing here, with my little electric mower, so not too noisy, and only every other week. I try not to do it at unsociable times.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/05/2021 14:55

Lockdown 1 and I was trying to record some verbal feedback for a child’s work. It was when we were having a heat wave so having the windows open was a must. My neighbours had clearly organised to mow their lawns one at a time with no breaks in between. All day there was lawn mower noise!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/05/2021 15:01

My delightful Hmm retired neighbours can easily spend 6/7 hr power washing their patio. It is a despicable waste of water. We live in Cumbria for a start...not exactly short of rain to rinse it!

Power washers - the soundtrack to the lockdown of 2020

RandomMess · 18/05/2021 15:05

Neighbours are having major building work done for 2 months. Two other neighbours have blocked driveways done by arrogant inconsiderate company whilst this is going on.

All very very noisy.

Sunday comes around and a 4th neighbour that retired young for medical reasons and is in his 50s started using power tools in his driveway 🤦🏼‍♀️ not sure why he couldn't do it any other day of the week. He always has some sort of project going on.

I just laughed tbh as no point being annoyed about it.

Then there is a taxi driver too an older guy possibly in his 60s has a souped up moped that is unbelievably loud and needs tonnes of revving. Fortunately not a daily occurrence.

We live in a street of bungalows, it's the older folk that are the noisiest 😂😂😂

eddiemairswife · 18/05/2021 15:13

I agree about Germany, Sunday was absolutely dead. We only visited one weekend to pick up our daughter, and it was like 1950s England.

The roads were also quiet as lorries weren't allowed to drive on that day.
AdjustableAssholeSettings · 18/05/2021 15:22

Have you considered standing outside the neighbour's house at 7am and making BBBBBBBRRRROOOOOOOMMMM noises with your own tools/mouth?
