Im feeling pretty fugly these days. In particular my face. Feeling old and saggy and washed out. Late 30s if that makes a difference.
I genuinely want to know, has anyone done anything that has given noticeable results? There’s so many lotions and potions and surgeries out there, but I don’t know where to start.

Lots of water and enough sleep.

Clinique Moisture Surge moisturiser is a game changer. My skin always looks really glowy when I use this and is an amazing primer under makeup!

Doing something with my flat long hair to give it more volume instantly makes me look better. I put waves in it and either leave it down, put it in a half up half down style or in a full of volume pony tail. Love it!

Mascara. I curl my lashes and use a volumising mascara. My eyes are a lovely hazel colour and really stand out when they’re defined with eye makeup.

I also try not to get stressed. I suffer with horrible nerves and low mood, and sometimes I’m absolutely burned out and my face shows this. See the above about enough sleep. If I don’t get enough sleep and don’t take care of myself, my mental health suffers and therefore my face suffers. Vicious cycle.

Sparse eyebrows really age you. FEG Eyebrow serum works really well for me & is cheap. . I also got that arm & hammer whitening toothpaste & it really makes a difference. Watch some You Tube make up tutorials for hacks as well. There are some great eyeliner & mascara hacks for ageing eyes. Nivea body lotion is as cheap as chips & also a great hand cream. Leave on your hands overnight ( v oily so I don't put it near my eyes).

Face massager for a tenner!
Swear to god some of my lines dissapeared. Also... Mah chinssssShock
Tablet of collagen a day or so (early 30s) and collagen rich diet (well richer than many others I guess) with homemade bone broths, fish with bones (like sardines) and skin etc.
Wash properly every evening, apply oil before bad. Smooth as baby's butt as they say.
Bloody wish I knew all this years ago😂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/05/2021 20:01

Actually mid 30s. I keep forgetting and lying to myselfBlush

I am hopeless at drinking water...but consume lots of tea, it all counts as it is fluid.
Out of interest I was researching whether drinking water would result in better skin and everything I have read scientifically disclaims it. For this reason I stick to tea, would be happy to be proved wrong.

Bbub · 18/05/2021 20:31

@SchrodingersImmigrant can you tell us more about the face massager? Sounds good!!!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/05/2021 20:38

Well that's a long ass link😳

DisgruntledPelican · 18/05/2021 20:44

The best things to improve my looks have been eating healthily (not with the intention of losing weight, but that helped) and drinking water. You can’t out-moisturise a bad diet and dehydration, although it does help a bit.

Bbub · 18/05/2021 20:49

@SchrodingersImmigrant wow that does look like a nice little gadget, thank you!

It's also really hanfy for back pain etc. Best spend money and most used non basic item here 😂

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 18/05/2021 20:56

Another recommendation for Botox. Done properly it works wonders. Good skincare products and routine. Look after your hair too. Cut and colour every 6-8 weeks. Nails, manicured, simple or bright but always neat. Makes a huge difference.

TurquoiseDragon · 18/05/2021 20:58

@Coffeekisses

Please be careful with retinol - it is essentially an irritant and triggered my rosacea (I’d never had it before).
I don''t use retinol as I was advised against it for this reason.

I use the basic Nivea night cream. Also use a Korean solid bar face wash that looks like soap (but it isn't) for daily use. I drink plenty of fluids and make sure I have daily vitamins with additional Vit D. I don't drink much alcohol, never did. I do get people thinking I look younger than I am, I'm 52 but regularly get people guessing around 45. Not bad for a fat cow like me. I've lost 2 stone in this latest lockdown, lots of walking.

I am going to get my brows microbladed later this year, they've been crap for years.

TheGumption · 18/05/2021 21:01

SPF! Sun damage is so, so aging as well as dangerous.

babbaloushka · 18/05/2021 21:25

A couple of tanning drops well mixed into moisturiser before bed worked wonders for me. Just added a healthy tone and made my teeth look whiter too!

CornishGem1975 · 18/05/2021 21:42

Re retinol - you need to start with a low one and slowly. I started with 0.2 once a week, then moved to 3 times a week. I'm just about to move up to 0.5.

Some people find it irritates them but that is actually quite usual - hence you should go light and slowly until you get used to it. I've not had any adverse reactions at all but I don't have sensitive skin.

Pixysmoke · 18/05/2021 21:44

This will sound weird but if I eat broccoli then the next day I notice my skin is always insanely soft and smooth. It's quite remarkable. Not sure why. Vitamin C?

firstimemamma · 18/05/2021 21:51

I'm teetotal.

Vursayles · 18/05/2021 21:52

I second Skin & Me. The simplicity is bliss and the active ingredients really work. That, sunscreen and a simple moisturiser is all you need to see a real improvement. You’ll need to wait until baby is born/has finished BFing to get the best anti-ageing results tho (from retinoids).

gelatodipistacchio · 18/05/2021 21:53

Following!

I often am thought to be younger than I am (40). I drink a bit too much alcohol, but I have religiously worn moisturiser day (with SPF) and night since I was 15. I walk at least a couple of miles daily, buy expensive night cream, and ear a very low carb/low preservative diet, mostly veg and meat.

gelatodipistacchio · 18/05/2021 21:53

*eat

Pyewackect · 18/05/2021 21:56

Drink lots it water. Get a good nights sleep. Have plenty of naughty sex. Strive to be happy.

Dontbeme · 18/05/2021 21:56

SPF in the mornings and a big glass of water before breakfast, it's easier to drink water first thing as you wake a bit parched.

Retionol from The Ordinary in the evenings has made a big difference for me.

Exercise is the other big game changer for my skin, I think it's the increased blood flow that is perking my skin up, that and I found exercise that I enjoy a bit ( well don't hate is more accurate) so it doesn't feel a chore. I do rebounder videos from YouTube on a mini trampoline I got from Decathlon.

Seesawmummadaw · 18/05/2021 21:59

Putting on weight has really done wonders for my skin! I was looking sunken, grey and washed out.
I just needed a bit of padding Wink my skin looks bright and more youthful.

haveaday · 18/05/2021 22:02

Botox all the way. And lip fillers, not trout pout just enough to stop the lines round the lips that really age you. And all the skincare, water, sleep and treatments above. But Botox is the only thing that'll fix your wrinkles. And eyebrows are really important too whether just draw them on everyday or get micro bladed or whatever. Maybe teeth whitening too, I want to do this but I'm not ready to give up coffee 😫
