To ask if you’ve done the Myers-Briggs test?

And what did you think of the outcome?
I completed one a while ago - I am an INFP and found it was scarily accurate.

Just interested to hear others’ thoughts and tell me, how does your mind work?

There was a fascinating thread on here recently about people who don’t really have an inner-monologue and the discussion about the differences in how we think was really enlightening. Would love to know how people with different personality types interpret the world around them.

@AnnaMagnani

Yes, it's bullshit.

Done it several times, got different answers each time. Each one was 'scarily accurate'. It's like a fucking horoscope.

Based on no proven research at all.

However it's a nice exercise to show how groups of people are diverse and think differently. That's it.

Yep, I agree. The four colours thing is too. I thought this stuff had been largely discredited.
GlamGiraffe · 17/05/2021 01:43

ESFP A.

toconclude · 17/05/2021 02:09

@Tippexy

Exactly. Pseudoscience in action.

CatAndHisKit · 17/05/2021 02:11

You need to be self-aware to the hilt for this to work.
I know the types well but I'm still not sure which type I am out of about three.
I also can't often answer a yes or no in this particular test as some answers depend on a situation/context and /or my mood. So with many questions, I gave neutral answers.
Just done this test, and the type that came up is wrong in quite a major way - though some traits are right.

I think the system does work but with someone very experienced accessing without any tests, just by observing and talking to you.

LibertyMole · 17/05/2021 02:22

What does seem to be true on all threads on it is that the INF people tend to love the internet, because they are always over-represented on the threads.

My result changes every time. I am assuming this means I am pretty average with no strong tendencies in any direction.

I agree that the big 5 are more useful measures.

CakesOfVersailles · 17/05/2021 02:26

It's pseudo-scientific - only do it for fun.

I am amazed any workplaces use it or take it seriously. Also it profiles you based on how you describe yourself - so of course most people find it very accurate! It's like filling in a form with your home address and then being surprised that it correctly tells you what village you live in.

PandemicPalava · 17/05/2021 03:22

Also an INFP and found it incredibly accurate

Bouledeneige · 17/05/2021 04:40

Yes I've gone it quite a few times and it's pretty accurate - I'm borderline ENTJ/ENTP. It's a classic CEO profile, which I am.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 17/05/2021 05:45

pseudo-science at its very best or worse his people think it’s actually realistic.

Oblomov21 · 17/05/2021 05:46

Very accurate. Liked it.

Wiredforsound · 17/05/2021 06:12

The Myers-Briggs is wibble. No reputable psychologist would touch it with a barge pole. It’s just a business balls scam. Here’s just some of the reasons why:

www.vox.com/2014/7/15/5881947/myers-briggs-personality-test-meaningless

If you’re wondering why your test is ‘scarily accurate’ read up on the Barnum / Forer Effect. I do this experiment with my first year psychology students and it’s an absolute hoot. Here’s one description of it here.

psych.fullerton.edu/mbirnbaum/psych101/barnum_demo.htm

Short answer: Don’t believe anything that tries to put you in a box. There are lots of valid and reliable scales out there if you really want to understand yourself a bit better (look up a ‘big 5’ personality tests. The scales have been derived psychometrically and actually exist in nature, unlike 3 of the 4 MBTI scales). You’re measured on a continuum (e.g you’re more Extravert than 53% of people rather than labelling you as one thing or another), and your scores are relatively stable - repeat a MBTI and it’s entirely possible you’ll end up with a different profile. The MBTI is fun, but as someone else said, it’s as useful as a horoscope.

thelegohooverer · 17/05/2021 06:37

Another INFP
I think introspective types enjoy this kind of thing. But I agree with those saying that it’s badly misused and misinterpreted for the workplace (not to mention easy to manipulate). A flaw in tests like these is that you have to actually know yourself to get an accurate result, and that’s a huge assumption .

devildeepbluesea · 17/05/2021 06:39

ESTJ, did it last week in fact.

It can be useful for mediation.

Geamhradh · 17/05/2021 06:43

INFJ every time

I do it with the kids at school and we all predict what everyone will get. I'd not use it to base life decisions on, but it's quite accurate for personality traits, particularly the fuller versions.

Alwaysconfuddled · 17/05/2021 06:58

ISTP-A / ISTP-T and I’d agree with it, it is scarily accurate

littleredberries · 17/05/2021 07:02

I just took the test and felt it was pretty wrong for me.

Wherediditgo · 17/05/2021 07:05

@Wearywithteens

Yeah... the nazis famously liked filing complex human psychology into neat little narrow categories too. Glad so many of you think it’s so helpful.
Wow! An extreme reaction!

Ldnmum276 · 17/05/2021 07:06

I did the 16personalities one and it didn't fit me whatsoever.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 17/05/2021 07:06

Like all these things you are answering questions about what you think about yourself
It would be more surprising if it wasnt accurate

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 17/05/2021 07:06

The Mediator INFP-T.

It's interesting/fun but I wouldn't take it too seriously.

We, humans, are (thankfully?) a little more complex than this stuff.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 17/05/2021 07:18

I’ve done it several times for work - years ago - always came out ENTJ or INTJ depending on how life was going. Now it says ISTJ-A. Most if it is accurate except for ‘Romance’ which is way off ... my logic takes me another road.

Francescaisstressed · 17/05/2021 07:52

The problem with Myers Briggs is that people like to imagine themselves a certain way and don't answer honestly.
I remember a girl in work when we did it as a team who described it as scarily accurate...everyone agreed it was nothing like her 😂
I would take it with a lunch of salt

newnortherner111 · 17/05/2021 07:57

I did the test many years ago. I cannot remember the letters, only that I have the personality of the Simpsons character Krusty the Clown.

JaneJeffer · 17/05/2021 08:03
Grin
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/05/2021 09:13

I did a Myers-Briggs at work when I changed department. I remember the HR person giving me the result and she told me that INTJ was very rare, especially for women. I think it was 1% of women. I told her that I didn't think that 1% was particularly rare, there were nearly 200 people in the company, more than half women, so having a female INTJ wasn't all that surprising. Which is quite possibly the most INTJ thing I could have said. Grin I was moving into the statistical analysis department, which (unsurprisingly) worked out very well for me.
