I feel lucky that I have managed to purchase my dream house. However, 2 years in of paying, I am dreading another 13 years of this! I miss our previous luxuries. Does it end? does it get better??

The time will fly and I know it sounds silly but the last payment of your mortgage will give you a real thrill.

Plus you have the opportunity to shop around for a different mortgage if you are really up against it, plus you can shave off equity if at some point you want to set up a business, you can arrange a mortgage holiday if you really need to let of steam and if that is not enough to cheer you on, remember the alternative; renting and living under the shadow of a landlord's whim.

You're doing great, you have made some excellent life choices, pat yourself on the back and keep at it.

You'll be glad you did.

CorianderBee · 18/05/2021 12:55

Well... not until you pay it off, obviously

ConfusedAdultFemale · 18/05/2021 12:58

The inability of posters to understand not everyone is in the U.K. and the rest of the world doesn’t operate exactly like the U.K. is astounding.

Mum2b43 · 18/05/2021 13:04

I used to have a mortgage but hated the way it tied me down so sold it and rented instead. My rent is double what my mortgage was but I’m happier.

I think either you have a ridiculous mortgage or you are delusional in thinking that renting would be cheaper.

Saying that though maybe you are like me and having a mortgage just isn’t your think, in which case sell up.

Being “tied down” in terms of your home is much less unappealing once you have had children.

Pre children I loved renting
Post children i wanted to decorate their rooms, buy furniture to suit the hone and basically establish roots and stability for them

While I don't disagree in some respects, this is a UK site with a predominantly UK user base. The OP didn't mention not being in the UK at first and you can't always expect people to consider all the possible variables that might be relevant just in case a poster is in one of the other 190-odd countries that are not the UK.

Yet another thread that has a not too outlandish question that has turned into a shitshow. Stop it, move on if you can only type school playground bullying comments.

Omg I am usually the one to say nothing but your sound so spoilt you live abroad brought your dream house and and are paying 4200 a month mortgage sell it and buy something cheaper or less continue renting then some people can't even find a house to rent and can't pay 1500 a month never mind 4200 you must have a high income

ZaraW · 18/05/2021 15:42

If your house is in the Gulf region, is it well built and will increase in value? I used to work with someone who owned a villa in Dubai and they said the building standards were low along with the gruelling heat which has an effect on the property structure.

If you live in a large villa I'm not surprised your electricity bill is do high with having to run the ac

The sensible option is to buy somewhere smaller and cheaper.

This made me laugh

I very much suspect you are usually the person to say something. Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/05/2021 19:39

@Asia98 how big is your house - how many bedrooms bathrooms living spaces big garden parking etc

Tzimi · 18/05/2021 20:42

@WaltzesWithSnobs

Couldn't read and run Flowers

I'm going to ask MN if they can organise a fundraiser. Pergolas for ex-Pats.

Why the sarcasm? It's not a crime to want to improve your house. By the sounds of it, it's very hot in Asia98's country, so a pergola might me necessary to deal with this.
Caelan2018 · 18/05/2021 22:01

Why would it make you laugh we are married with 3 kids renting a house davinf for a mortgage both working and hoping to build a modest house and you know nothing about me so why would you say I suspect I always say something loads of others called her spoilt and told her to grow up but you comment on my post

TiddyTidTwo · 18/05/2021 23:18

That's great but is it future-proof? Most mortgage payers will have paid off their mortgage by retirement and will still struggle on pensions. Rent payers pay rent forever and it's unlikely to get cheaper.

Because the others didn’t prefix with “I’m usually the one to say nothing”!

OP by asking why people don't buy when renting is more expensive Yiu sond embarrassingly privlidged.

To buy you need a deposit and to be approved for a mortgage. Both of these thi hs are out of reach for many people due to precarious employment, self employment, low wages, high rents do no ability to save etc. Really not hard to imagine.

Has the OP asked that question?
luckylavender · 19/05/2021 13:48

What do you mean 'does it end?' You took out the mortgage you knew the term, you know when it ends.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/05/2021 13:58

@Egghead81

Yes the OP did ask that question.

wait?? rent is more expensive than a mortgage in the UK? How is that possible? Wouldnt everyone buy then? or is it very difficult to get a mrotgage there?

Neonprint · 19/05/2021 14:38

@Egghead81 yep

Egghead81 · 19/05/2021 17:12

She sounds completely out of step with the UK property market (which is odd, seeing as she is British, presumably has family here, presumably likes to keep abreast of life here and hasn’t lived where she’s living for relatively long) rather than incredibly privileged.

I stand by my opinion.

She posted as a stealth boast
But it backfired because, to put if bluntly, I think they’ve made a shit decision to buy where they’ve bought.
