To ask what you consider “The North”?

Just a post about being a Northerner/Southerner which made me think - what do you consider as “The North”? I’ve never had a solid answer for this and just wanted to know the general census on this.

North of Birmingham but I’m from Southampton originally so everything was north .

wtheck · 15/05/2021 12:46

Derby is the cut off in my head.

I'm from just south of Birmingham.

Arbadacarba · 15/05/2021 12:47

We have Midlands today!

Grin I was slightly tongue-in-cheek - when I lived in Wiltshire (long before the days of digital TV) there was a period when our aerial only picked up broadcasts from the Midlands for some reason - we had ATV then Central whereas everyone else got HTV West. I don't think anyone would consider Wiltshire as part of the Midlands!

SamanthaVimes · 15/05/2021 12:47

@Hairbrush123

I personally consider The North anything above Birmingham Blush.
Same!
Osrie · 15/05/2021 12:47

South, midlands and north

Confusedandshaken · 15/05/2021 12:47

I'm from London. Sheffield and upwards.

Oh yes! We had Central News too. I've never really thought about it before. Seems so obvious now 🤣
Thewinterofdiscontent · 15/05/2021 12:50

Oxford and below is South to me. The Midlands counts as the north because the weather, accents and the look of the architecture, all say northern to me.
I do go up to Scotland a lot and the proper North feels really different again, so I know the Midlands is actually not quite the same.If I was taking the piss out if Northerners though, I think I actually mean Midlanders. The North proper is more like a different country ( like Cornwall or Norfolk) than the stereotype that pops into my head of the North.

Byllis · 15/05/2021 12:50

Anything above Stoke. I regularly travel between Manchester and the midlands, and Stoke is my dividing line.

greatauntfanny · 15/05/2021 12:51

Would like to gently recommend the person who views Liverpool as the 'West Midlands' to give their head a wobble.

maddening · 15/05/2021 12:51

North of what? UK, Scotland is North, possibly parts of Newcastle and Carlisle.

North of Scotland - Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh as South of Scotland.

North of England, the northwest starts at crewe, so that and above.

Wales, north of Dolgellau?

North of Northern Ireland - North of Cookstown?

Meatshake · 15/05/2021 12:51

Anything above the M4

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 15/05/2021 12:52

Located in central London and the (British) north to me is the English Scottish boarder. So Scotland would be considered north. And definitely not to mean north of the Watford gap! The real north is more Scandinavia, Siberia, Alaska and northern Canada as the British Isles are not as comparatively northern. North or south - all good!

LST · 15/05/2021 12:53

So would you class Stoke as the Midlands?
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/05/2021 12:54

Yorkshire/Lancashire and above. I'm a Geordie though I've lived down south for longer than I lived up north.

ThatchersCold · 15/05/2021 12:55

Anything past bristol Grin

sluj · 15/05/2021 12:58

I am from the Midlands but if you are reluctant to let us be distinct, I would much rather be classed as Northern rather than Southern. Anyone else agree?

MattDillonsEyebrows · 15/05/2021 12:59

I don't think there is a North/South without the Midlands.

I am born and raised in Leicestershire and I would say we are the southern side of Midlands so I see anything below us as 'southern'.

I have a 'posh Lesta' accent, I tend to have a bath in the barth, but also have a very short Buhs (Bus) and Fuhss,(fuss) sounds which is much more northern.
My DH is from Northamptonshire, literally 1/2 an hour down the road from me, and has a much more southern accent, definitely Barth, grarss, but also uses the longer Bahs and Fahs .
Sorry about the weird spellings, not sure how to put it, I hope it makes sense! Grin

Felty · 15/05/2021 13:01

Draw a line through Crewe and anything north of that. Chester is north-lite. Penrith is in the proper north.

Pyewackect · 15/05/2021 13:01

Anything north of Nottingham.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/05/2021 13:02
@SleepingStandingUp

I’m from the south, I live in the East Midlands, so to me, it’s very much the north.
That’s why I said, “In my book”
But if you live in the Midlands how can you not get that it isn't North or South, it's in the Midlands?

DifficultBloodyWoman · 15/05/2021 13:03

Anything north of Watford is north. I’m a Londoner (obviously).

Rakip · 15/05/2021 13:03

Cairngorms and above!

Yup. Brown sauce, gravy, industry, gravy, bread and butter with everything
MerylStropp · 15/05/2021 13:05

Born and bred in Plymouth, so ... anywhere north of Exeter, I suppose... Grin
