Just a post about being a Northerner/Southerner which made me think - what do you consider as “The North”? I’ve never had a solid answer for this and just wanted to know the general census on this.

From Kent here. It's anywhere north of the Thames.

Tealightsandd · 16/05/2021 19:43

@speakout

The whole idea of "The North" is very othering. Creates divisions, reinforces stereotypes, creates ideas of them and us. So much history and baggage is attached to these ieas- it is quite destructive.
I agree. Not when it's literally just about geography, but how it's so commonly used today. Professional Northerner, Andy burning through taxpayer cash in expenses Burnham is a good example of this. He's very fake but also hugely patronising.

It's great for those out to divide and rule.

Islington :)

LongIslandIcedT · 16/05/2021 20:23

Winterfell

@Letsgetreadytocrumble

I would say anywhere from Sheffield upwards.
This is what I think, too
Treacletoots · 16/05/2021 20:32

Sheffield is still quite Midlands for me. Leeds is where I'd draw that bar.

Tealightsandd · 16/05/2021 20:32

Norway

Dongdingdong · 16/05/2021 20:36

Seriously, I can't believe this thread is 22 pages. How can there be any debate when the answer is so simple?

South
Midlands
North

Confused
denshort · 16/05/2021 20:43

North of the river!

Pootles34 · 16/05/2021 20:46

Newcastle is the start of the north to me!

North of Stoke.

Thatswatshesaid · 16/05/2021 20:52

North of York.
But having lived in the midlands (Manchester) for a while now I’m starting to realise this isn’t how people round hear see it. I think once you get to Leicester your in the south.

TolkiensFallow · 16/05/2021 20:52

Watford and above

Floods123 · 16/05/2021 20:59

Living in South Devon, The North starts in Exeter. That's where the busy traffic starts, the town centre becomes a clone of a 1,000 other boring cities, and people talk funny.

hellolittlebaby · 16/05/2021 21:00

Sheffield and up

jcyclops · 16/05/2021 21:08

My line between North and Midlands runs Skegness - Stoke - Dee Estuary, which puts Lincoln & N.Lincs in the North, also Worksop, Mansfield, Chesterfield and the whole of the Peak District, The Potteries, Crewe, Chester and most of Cheshire. Just South of the line in the Midlands are Boston, Newark, Nottingham, Derby.

My line between Midlands and the South runs approx Monmouth - Kings Lynn, putting Gloucester, Cheltenham, Banbury, Northampton, Kettering, and Peterborough all just in the South.

You don't live in the Midlands.
JillWoodhead · 16/05/2021 21:18

I'm in North Derbyshire, and I am northern.

3CCC · 16/05/2021 21:19

Anywhere north of Nottingham possibly Lincoln

EwwSprouts · 16/05/2021 21:20

The M62 is the helpful dividing line.

EvilTwinsAreHere · 16/05/2021 21:29

I was once told by a London friend that I was very brave to live so far from London! I live in Birmingham not Beirut GrinConfused. True story.

AppleWax · 16/05/2021 21:32

Living in Northumberland everything is Southern, Scotland is north. Personally would like the border to be at Hadrian’s Wall so we could be Scottish instead. Edinburgh is nearer than London lol!

Rollercoaster1920 · 16/05/2021 21:36

London was a long way north for me as a child! I grew up in Devon.

TV regions give some structure to the debate.

LuluJakey1 · 16/05/2021 21:38

From the Tyne upwards.
