To think dying in a plane crash is far preferable to on a sinking ship?

Obviously I'd prefer neither, but I have friend who's wife refuses to fly so they go on a cruise every year.

I try not to think of it too much, but the thought of being on a ship as it goes down is far more distressing than a plane crash. All that time to contemplate your fate and wonder where DC are.

If you’re on a ship there’s also the possibility of a plane crashing into you, whereas if you’re in the air you’re unlikely to be hit by an passing cruise liner.

My ex was in a commercial plane crash. Most people walked off but it killed everyone in business class. He certainly knew it was coming down and got the 30s of sheer terror. I suspect the several hours of terror on a sinking ship might be worse though.

CorvusPurpureus · 14/05/2021 16:40

It's a Kursk submarine disaster type scenario that gives me the heebie jeebies.

I reckon if we are talking certain death (unlikely) I'll go with the plane crash & get it over with.

elp30 · 14/05/2021 16:47

Against my better judgement, I watched a documentary of the 1994 sinking of the MS Estonia.

I don't like flying at all but I'll take the plane over the boat easily!

EBearhug · 14/05/2021 16:47

I think I'd rather a quick, painless death, but there's no guarantee from either a plane or ship (nor a fatal car crash.)

Really should update my will...

amylou8 · 14/05/2021 16:51

I'll take plummeting from 35 thousand feet, rather than being stuck in the bow of a sinking ship. Realistically a sinking ship is unlikely to be so catastrophic that you wouldn't at least get a chance to put on a life jacket or run to a life boat.

MoesBar · 14/05/2021 16:54

Drowning is not a peaceful way to die - I drowned as a child and was fortunate enough to be resuscitated, I still have nightmares about it now.

Plane crash = instant death, pretty much.

Jesusmaryjosephandthecamel · 14/05/2021 17:13

Having been in a crash landing of a large holiday jet and being injured I can tell you it was the most frightening thing I’ve ever been through. I’m terrified of flying now, although I have flown many time since. Now, I always make a point of knowing where the emergency exits are, wherever I am, whether it’s in a hotel, cruise ship or shopping centre.

cakebythepound1234 · 14/05/2021 17:19

@grumpygiraffe 😂 Very true!

QuestionableMouse · 14/05/2021 17:19

As long as its not called Titanic, I'll take my chances with the ship.

CovidCorvid · 14/05/2021 17:23

If it was a choice between dying in a plane crash and dying by drowning yes I’d take the plane crash. It would be quicker.

I was on a plane once which lost a significant amount of altitude quite quickly. Think people vomiting and screaming. I really thought that was it, was in the middle of a huge jet and no idea where the ground was. It actually wasn’t as scary as you’d expect. I remember hanging onto the seat infront to avoid going up in the air and just giggling hysterically at my mate who was screaming her head off!

WeatherwaxLives · 14/05/2021 17:26

I know someone who nearly drowned - was hoiked out at the last second after he'd already breathed water.

He said it was peaceful and didn't hurt at all breathing the water.

I'd rather that than a plane crash any day. I've seen investigation pictures of plane crash victims, the injuries were horrific.

Catmuffin · 14/05/2021 17:31

I hate the thought of plummeting. Must feel horrible. At least with a ship you wouldn't plummeting out of the sky

TeamMummy · 14/05/2021 17:31

I'd prefer a sinking ship, you can't jump off a plane and survive

TSSDNCOP · 14/05/2021 17:35

I'd take the ship every time, especially a cruise liner.

Spied · 14/05/2021 17:35

I'd choose plane.
I think on a ship it'd feel like prolonging the terror. There's also that chance of survival which would make it somehow more real but more terrifying for non-swimming me.
In a plane I'd hope the shock renders me unconscious before the crash.

TSSDNCOP · 14/05/2021 17:37

Good points made about the sharks and the germs, but on balance I'm still Team Ship.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/05/2021 17:38

DP and I have this discussion. I really don't like flying, he hates the thought of being on a ship in an vast expanse of water. The thought of plummeting out of the sky terrifies me. So I'd take my chances of a ship.

georgarina · 14/05/2021 17:39

I have a fear of being on a plane that loses control and flies UP uncontrollably into the atmosphere until it runs out of fuel and plummets back down.

Compared to that I'd pick a ship...I guess

OldScrappyAndHungry · 14/05/2021 17:42

@Sparklingbrook this has been disproved I’m afraid! Both on the door both would have died! ShockGrin

CovidCorvid · 14/05/2021 17:44

I think the Poseidon adventure film has given me a fear of drowning in a confined space.

Northernshepherd · 14/05/2021 17:45

@Lovebug06

The thought of being stuck in a ship or aircraft that's crashed in the sea and being in it in the sea makes me feel ill. Even if I was dead I hate the thought of being at the bottom of the sea. Even typing this makes me feel sick!
This, exactly this. It bothers me and I think about it more than I need to 🤣. The thought of floating about in the ocean makes me sick. Hate flying over the ocean.
Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2021 17:46
@Sparklingbrook this has been disproved I’m afraid! Both on the door both would have died! ShockGrin
Probably eventually Grin I can't see how it stayed afloat to start with TBF. What a terrible film that was.

JimBobNoJob · 14/05/2021 17:55

Well if I’m going to die either way. The thought of being underwater on its own absolutely terrifies me never mind the shear size, depth and power of the ocean added to the mix.

So I’d have to opt for the plane and hope I’d be rendered unconscious on impact.

Etinox · 14/05/2021 18:00

@FlorenceWintle

I’d prefer the ship to a plane crash. You can try to hold on, swim a bit, maybe find something to float on.

On a plane, you just sit there helpless, waiting for the inevitable.

But not for long!
