To think men who come on to you via online scrabble apps are pathetic?

Is nowhere safe? Just join a dating site if that is what you're after. It's so grim and actually reminded me that men used to send lechy messages when I used to play online cribbage on yahoo games as a teenager (yes I was a very cool teenager).

Apparently this is a known scam. To begin with I did chat with people thinking they were being friendly. But thought it odd how they were all American retired veterans who were single and looking for love! Some were incredibly persistent at trying to get my personal number (I never gave it out). I did a google search on it, and it appears these are bots trying to scam lonely women...

Like others I gave up my account in the end as got fed up with the nonsense.

It's a shame as I love words with friends. May go back on and just block the chat function.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/05/2021 08:48

Trying to think why I never had this and only thing I can think of is that the nick is based on my foreign name 🤔 But I still had profile pic of me from prettier times😂
I think it's the name

ValidUser · 14/05/2021 09:29

First, I replied with a casual comment about spending time with my husband.

When that didn't work, I changed my profile picture to my cat and it continued.

Now I block.

wearetheweirdosmr · 14/05/2021 11:07

Words with friends is well know for being used for illicit messaging.

Used extensively by unfaithful husbands and wives because who thinks to look at a game app

Beamur · 14/05/2021 11:14

I asked DH if he'd ever received a chat up line or request to have sexy chats during such games - he used to play Scrabble a lot and is playing some other word game now
Not once...he looked quite shocked to find out it had happened to me using exactly the same game.

RuggeryBuggery · 14/05/2021 13:05

I find generally they are not ‘real’ men on words but scammers who are ridiculous 😂
Always working offshore, often widowed etc
They don’t even play the long game. Straight in with ‘are you married’ 🙄

Now when I get a request I just look at their profile. If average game score is very low always a dead giveaway as means lots of resigning.

On the other hand I’ve enjoyed chatting to some people on there where the conversation has started about the game then developed naturally

jetadore · 14/05/2021 13:14

@MishMashMummy

YES!

I remember saying to my husband how weird it was that people messaged you on these apps and he was like ‘that has literally never happened to me’. It’s just women who get the delights of lonely, middle aged blokes thinking you’ll be flattered beyond measure by a message saying ‘hi cutie’ on a game of online scrabble

My Dh said the same, so I told him to change his profile pic to a woman’s (his username is ambiguous) and when the inevitable happened he was shocked, shocked I tell you!
JovialNickname · 14/05/2021 13:17

God men are pathetic. Is there no online corner we can escape to without being perved over

MargateSands · 14/05/2021 13:19

I’m actually tempted to get the app just see what happens.... and then delete very quickly. I’m astounded!!

LittlestBoho · 14/05/2021 13:35

I never accept game requests from strangers on Words With Friends, and I have no profile picture so I don't get any weirdo men messaging me. My friend had her own photo on her profile though and she was constantly harassed by men, all day every day. In the end she changed her name to something more masculine and her picture to a photo of the sea so they mostly leave her alone now.

Men are so scummy; why can't we have a game that is just innocent fun? They ruin everything with dick pictures and sex chat, like rabid possums. (I'm doing a disservice to possums there).

OldEvilOwl · 14/05/2021 13:44

Yes! can spot them coming now. They usually have a really low scrabble score so obviously just there for the chat. I used to say Hi back, but now I just ignore and they leave the game after a couple of moves (hence the low score) I tend to play the same people on repeat, rather than accept new ones. I've been playing with Brian every day since the first lockdown last March but we never chat.

OldEvilOwl · 14/05/2021 13:46

I had one going like this
Him - Hi good luck
Me - thanks you too
Him - I would like us to get us to know each other better
Him - hello?
Him - Hello? why are you ignoring me?

then he left, fucking idiot

ilovesooty · 14/05/2021 14:39

I don't open the messages.

My longest streak is with a man who's never attempted to message me.

AtoZed · 14/05/2021 14:44

I don't respond to messages.

sashh · 14/05/2021 14:46

Men actually hit on you in online scrabble?!

Yes.

Often the same ones, one always says, "this is a rubbish dating app" and I tell him I'm there to play scrabble and he actually is a good player and doesn't continue.

But yep I've had them want to 'go elsewhere' and some get really arsey about it.

I don't sleep very well so often I play grannies in Australia and the USA.

I use ISC and can usually find a decent game.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/05/2021 14:54

My DM had to stop playing Bridge online for the same reason. The woman is 70 and just wanted to home her card skills, and she was having to fend off perverts and con artists.

optimistic40 · 14/05/2021 16:05

Urgh! Had the same on a chess app a few years back!

Flamingosarentreal · 14/05/2021 16:26

Some women lost lots of money to a scammer who messaged her through words with friends. It was on the Kym Marsh programme love or money recently.
I had it too but realised it was a scam
