Is nowhere safe? Just join a dating site if that is what you're after. It's so grim and actually reminded me that men used to send lechy messages when I used to play online cribbage on yahoo games as a teenager (yes I was a very cool teenager).

Ditto. Equally there is one person with whom I play every single day yet we never, ever converse and it feels a bit odd too, even though I have no real wish or need to chat. Dh says maybe he/she/it is a bot.

I had an absolute plague of them so changed my game name to a male one and it hasn't happened since.

My DH used to play until he dropped his phone in the canal and he also had some very inappropriate messages from women. He hasn't bothered to download the app onto his new phone.

On Scrabble a lot of people do seem to have dating style profile pics too, which amazes me.

Yep! I've chatted to a few but it doesn't take long to get nasty. I had one American guy ask me how I have sex with my wife (SS couple)!! I told him I don't discuss that with my face to face friends so I'm hardly likely to discuss it with a random on the internet! I just ignore them but have to say I don't play anywhere near as much as I did because I got sick of it.

I’ve found the online Scrabble full of obvious dating scammers. Mostly Indian or American, their chat is generally semi-literate even though their Scrabble can be high-scoring. So effectively you’re playing a computer and they drop out half way through games when they find you aren’t interested.

Never been hit on by a genuine person - I don’t put m6 location up. Stopped playing.

If this is scrabble go I only play against UK based players and the chat requests stopped. I also play bots a lot. And when you find a real life person you enjoy playing against just rematch them (Although it is hard to tell bots from real people).

Well maybe it’s like the modern equivalent of joining a group you’re interested in in the hope of meeting someone? I mean sure pervy messages and offers of dick pics are not okay but a little flirt...? Who cares. Just block them if it bothers you.

It's not the same as joining a group hoping to meet someone. Let's say you sign up for a cycling club. Would you flirt with every single man on your first day there? I bet you won't. Also, I use the term flirting loosely here because if you reply to most (NOT ALL) of these people (assuming they're not bots or the rare decent person), the next question tends to be them asking for nudes, making sexual conversation, or trying to send you dick pics. There's rarely anything organic or reciprocal about this situation and I think it's a shame we can't play a simple game without being bombarded with lewd messages.

I gave up on Words with Friends for this very reason. You would start a game and a few rounds in it would be "You're very beautiful." My profile pic is me and my husband and I'm a passable but not beautiful 59 year old!

It's a nuisance. I quite miss the game.

Yes, I changed my picture on scrabble to a non feminine motif as is my user name. Nobody should have to do this but it has made a big difference.

Yes! This really annoys me. I never reply. My profile pic is me with my kids so for all they know they are messaging kids! I don't reply and they get huffy and quit the game. I have a few I never message and play all the time.

I was offering a suggestion to help the OP continue to play a game she enjoys.

Every medium that has a friends or chat function is the same. It irritates me. Fitbit, some music quiz thing I like, myfitnesspal, everything...... there's a letchy bloke scattergunning messages to every woman on there.

I hate this! I changed my profile pic to one of me and DH and they still tried it on! If anyone male messages me I just block them and play on. DH has started to get messages from women, complete with those Catfish-style photos.

OMG this happened to me with Words with Friends - constant emails from creepy blokes. I didn't want to remove the chat function as I had been enjoying playing scrabble with actual friends and taking the mickey if I beat them. In the end I just stopped playing. It was getting way too addictive anyway.
