How much would you need to win

As an aside to the other thread on lottery wins. I’d like to win 1.8 million.

1 million into pension so I never have to work again.

400k to family, friends and charity

300k to buy a lovely house and 100k to keep it that way (maintenance etc).

Other than that, I’d live off the interest (about 10k per year) and have a small part time job!

All figures out 😂

About 80 million would be good.

Same. I’m quite risk averse. £1.8m just wouldn’t be enough of a safety net to let me retire and live out my days in luxury without fretting about frittering if all away or losing it somehow.

DenisetheMenace · 14/05/2021 06:43

All those saying £100 m etc., wouldn’t you feel uncomfortable with that?
I think once it tops £10 m the top prize should be split. 10x people with lives changed is much better than 1 with more money than they could reasonably spend in a lifetime.

Butchyrestingface · 14/05/2021 06:49

All those saying £100 m etc., wouldn’t you feel uncomfortable with that?

Nope, think I’d be just dandy. 😀

I do agree with the rest of your post in principle. But we’re talking hypotheticals so I wantz £££££££.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 14/05/2021 06:51

I’d like about 4.7m

FFSFFSFFS · 14/05/2021 06:57

@BellaTheDog - I've researched the dog issue. It would be private planes all the way. My dog will also be accompanied by his own private vet on all flights and trips. Just in case you know.

Shoxfordian · 14/05/2021 07:07

Wouldn’t feel uncomfortable at all
I’d help my own people if I won 100 million, and donate to charity but I would never feel uncomfortable at being wealthy

BellaTheDog · 14/05/2021 07:19

@FFSFFSFFS - Private planes it is then!

bigbaggyeyes · 14/05/2021 07:26

£300000 to pay off mortgage and debts. £300000 into my dh pension, £150000 into my pension and £500000 to take me to retirement

So about 1.5 mil would see my improve my lifestyle and set me up for early retirement

BellaTheDog · 14/05/2021 07:39

@bigbaggyeyes that wouldn’t even come close to what I need. A 4 bed house near me is about £6M.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/05/2021 07:45

I'd love to win a huge amount.

My husband and I are both retired and don't have expensive tastes but I could buy houses/pay off mortgages for my children, nephews and nieces (13 of them) and children of my friends.

Then I'd set up some sort of children's charity.

Blimey, are you in London or the South East?

Don't you want a nice big country pile with massive lands for the dog to roam Hound of the Baskervilles style? 😀

BrownEyedGirl80 · 14/05/2021 07:52

5 million should do it

BellaTheDog · 14/05/2021 07:56

@Butchyrestingface - yes, I’m in London. Here is my house. It’s £7.95M.

LadyWithLapdog · 14/05/2021 07:59

@bellathedog all that money and no parking? Another few hundred thousands would sort out a chauffeur.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/05/2021 08:00

1mill could make us very comfortable.
150K would pay off both current mortgages. Rental income from these, after putting aside money for maintenance, voids etc would be 12-15k
300k for education for both children.
300k for a bigger house to live in.
That's 250k left.
Would still have DHs pension of 30k.

Obviously more would be better.

BellaTheDog · 14/05/2021 08:01

@LadyWithLapdog I would have a black cab account. I hate driving. Also the responsibility of having staff is too much.

Coo. Is that the one you're currently living in/selling or the one you want?

This has inspired me to hit Right for my own "money no object" abode in which to rest these weary bones...

BellaTheDog · 14/05/2021 08:02

@Butchyrestingface - it’s the house I want to buy.

LadyWithLapdog · 14/05/2021 08:03

@BellaTheDog I see this is a well thought out plan :)

bigbaggyeyes · 14/05/2021 08:11

@BellaTheDog I love my little house and wouldn't want to move... although a nice cottage in the highlands with enough land for horses and live stock wouldn't go amiss, ok as you're offering I'll take another mil Grin

Hellcatspangle · 14/05/2021 08:14

I'd like about 3 million so I can buy my dream farmhouse on the coast with holiday cottages to rent out, buy the kids a house each to get them started and give some away to family.

bigbaggyeyes · 14/05/2021 08:15

@Butchyrestingface and @BellaTheDog why are expensive houses always white inside? Do you think it's because they can afford cleaners, nanny's etc so they don't have to consider dirty hand marks on the walls, or muddy wellies in the hallway? Maybe they have a 'boot room' when're children and adults are washed before entering. Those carpets in that Mayfair house would last about 5 mins with my kids, dogs, dh and me Grin

takemetothelakes · 14/05/2021 08:39

500k would buy me a lovely house and money to furnish it, replace my car and have some fun. It would be incredible but not completely life changing. My rent is low so it wouldn't make a huge difference to my daily finances.

We're both in our 40s so we'd need a big win to completely give up work. I don't want to not work but not really have the cash to do much with our time.
I don't think we're extravagant but we'd want to enjoy our lives and have a bit of luxury.
10 million would be great thanks. 👍

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/05/2021 08:44

I'm probably older than you but even winning something like 20k would be life changing.

However, my fantasy win is more like 5 million. I'd be able to set aside about 350k for each of my 4 children to buy a house. I'm not sure about the pension, I'm older than my husband and id be really annoyed thinking we could possibly have been better off investing it rather than him ending up with low income because I'd died.

Shoppingwithmother · 14/05/2021 08:50

There wouldn’t be any interest for you to live off if you’ve used all the money! You don’t get interest on money you’ve put into a pension.
