To think I can get a refund?

Happycat1212 · 13/05/2021 12:34

I bought a new vacuum in January, a few months later the handle snapped off, I haven’t been able to return it to Argos as my local store has been shut throughout lock down and has only just opened again. I called Argos before returning but the woman said that before I could return it I would have to speak to the manufacture first, so she put me through, however they were just trying to send me out a new one which I don’t want even after explaining I want my money back. Aibu to think I can still return it in store for a refund? I don’t want to have a wasted journey as I don’t drive so will need to carry it down there and it is heavy, surely I’m entitled to my money back?

Argos have been accepting returns during lockdown as my dd regularly buys knives from there and returns them the next day.

Happycat1212 · 13/05/2021 13:18

Yes they did but like I said my local store was closed so I can’t return it to a closed store, my other one is too far to get to I don’t drive.

My local stand alone Argos store has been closed. It’s not an Argos in Sainsbury’s the stand alone stores have been closed.

Argos are shitbags about refunds.

I had them refuse me a refund on something because I’d opened the box!

I didn’t have time or energy to taken it further.

Happycat1212 · 13/05/2021 13:20

BelleBlueBell
That’s what I called to asked but they couldn’t confirm that it would be accepted she said I had to take it up with the manufacturer, so just going to chance it I think.

You can 100% try for a refund, but I can't see it happening especially if you've already spoke to them. It should have warranty, but even then if most probably won't be a refund you receive.

laurenlodge · 13/05/2021 13:24

The store will be a wasted journey. They've offered you what they're legally required to.

If it was they case they had decided to refund rather than replace (eg because they no longer sold vaccums) they can deduct money from the refund because you've used it for four months. So be wary of pushing for that.

laurenlodge · 13/05/2021 13:25

Ignore the above - they can't deduct from the refund for 6mo so you're fine.

MrsPnut · 13/05/2021 13:26

Are you outside of the 30 days since the stores reopened?
If you are then a repair or replacement is all you can ask for, but if the repair or replacement breaks then you are entitled to a refund.

@delilahbucket

If it is anything like Currys they will insist you must go through the manufacturer. Currys did tell me I could go to store with a six week old broken printer, only for a shirty "manager" to tell me she couldn't help me, so it was a complete waste of a journey. I complained to Currys, they offered me a gift card. I'm still waiting for it and this was in June last year. Maybe they are hoping to go bust before they issue it.
Currys are cunts. I was banned from a branch for insisting on my legal rights. They have no right to refer any customer to a manufacturer - ou contract is with them, no-one else. Twats. Needless to say I haven't shopped there for years and I won't be going back.
vivainsomnia · 13/05/2021 13:30

Why can’t you accept that them offering to repair and then replace if it can’t be is perfectly reasonable? They are not even asking how it broke when ultimately, it could happen e been through negligence.

Why are you against a replacement if it can’t be repaired ?

Happycat1212 · 13/05/2021 13:33

Because I’ve just said I don’t want a vacuum that breaks after 4 months. I wasn’t being rough with it at all. Surely if you had something and it broke within 4 months it would put you off wanting another?!

Tinkywinkydinkydoo · 13/05/2021 13:38

I used to work in Argos Customer services, It’s very unlikely they will refund a £200 vacuum if it can’t be repaired or replaced. I wouldn’t waste your money by just going down, try ringing the local store and explaining. They will tell you over the phone what the process will be and if you can have a refund. As others have stated, if it had broken in the first 30 days it would be refunded but after that it will either be repaired or replaced. Explain the handle is broken so it will need to be replaced, try asking for a different brand, they’re much likely to replace than refund.

I totally agree with you, I wouldn't want a new one either if it can break that quickly, sounds like it could happen again. I'd do what you're going to do and go to the store, ask for a refund, what's the worst that happens?
Mabelface · 13/05/2021 13:44

I used to work for them. If it's a Vax, then they do all you to ring Vax themselves. However, if you return it for a refund as faulty, then your normal statutory rights apply. My store would have refunded.

LookItsMeAgain · 13/05/2021 13:45

Any fault that develops in an appliance in the first 6 months is deemed to have been there at the start.
You bought it from Argos so your contract is with them and not the manufacturer.
Return it to Argos and if they start giving you any hassle, tell them that under the Supply of Goods & Services act they have to offer you either a refund, a replacement or a repair.
You could say that you're no longer happy with the quality of this brand so you either want a replacement (doesn't have to match the brand but has to be of equal or greater value borne by the retailer as far as I remember) or a refund.
I'd personally go with a refund and then you can select a new brand and test that out!

GabsAlot · 13/05/2021 13:45

if you dont drive dont just chance it you'll getr even more stressed if they say no at least ring again first and see what they say

SunnySideDownBriefly · 13/05/2021 13:47

I think you should brass neck it and take it back to a store. It's not fit for purpose if it broke so quickly and you shouldn't have to accept a replacement which would run the same risk.

Do they stock something else that you'd prefer? I think you'd be more likely to get somewhere if you went for an exchange...even if it's a partial exchange/refund.

LookItsMeAgain · 13/05/2021 13:47

"If the fault occurs within the first six months of owning the item, it is considered that the fault was there when you bought it. In general, the seller can offer to repair the item first. This should be a permanent repair and the problem should not reoccur."

I bought a iron for £45 from Argos and after few months it started leaking water all over clothes. I took it back to Argos and they said they can’t help me as more than 30 days, even the item was clearly faulty.
I lost £45.

teraculum29 · 13/05/2021 14:07

Ok, I have different story.
I purchased Air fryer, (Nov 2020) after 4month it developed a fault.
I tried to contact the manufacturer but on their website it was saying if it below the 12month from purchase, I need to contact the seller. So I did. After a few weeks email exchanges The seller offered a refund, only because my item was not on sale anymore and couldn't be repair.

OP you item is under the warranty, so it need to be exchanged for new one or repaired.

Eviethyme · 13/05/2021 14:46

You won't get a refund, just a replacement

midnightstar66 · 13/05/2021 16:24

Just me that's curious about this then?? 👀😆

BoyTree · 13/05/2021 16:28

NO!! Please explain more about the knives situation @Comefromaway

This thread is making me very nervous about the Phillips Lumea I bought a year ago but never used in my lockdown haze. If it doesn't work I'm stuffed.
