To think winning the lottery would solve all my problems

I’m pretty much permanently stressed these days and 95% of that is down to money. The need to earn money takes up a lot of hours in the week, which leaves me little time to sort everything else, like the neverending cooking, cleaning, chores and life admin, not to mention spending less time with my DC than I would like. If I could win a couple of million on the lottery all that stress would instantly disappear and life would be so very easy compared to now.

Of course it’s never going to happen, but a woman can dream!

Perhaps those lottery winners getting divorced had been dreaming of doing that for ages, they just couldn't afford to divorce Grin (hollow laugh)

the80sweregreat · 13/05/2021 16:56

A rich misery is so much more better off than a poorer misery I'm sure although I bet people will come on and say that's nonsense of course!
It could buy you private treatments for your problems and that would help matters!

TeeBee · 13/05/2021 16:56

@Seeyou

Me too. Then I could get rid of my cheater DH , not stress about my future and help my DCs . Would do wonders for my mental well being. Must go buy a ticket. Smile
Probably best to get rid of him before you win so you don't have to share it with him.
the80sweregreat · 13/05/2021 16:58

I wouldn't divorce my dh but I might buy him his dream motorbike and his own place to live in !
( depends on the actual win size of course)
Might end up just being the bike..

SmileyClare · 13/05/2021 17:01

I might buy him..his own place to live in

What a great idea Grin I'm adding that to my lottery list. "Buy the house next door for dh"

the80sweregreat · 13/05/2021 17:08

I'd buy the boys and dh a place ( really giving it some proper thought now) and I can live on my own , with bed to myself and they could pop over for a swim in my indoors pool now and again ..
.. when I tell them it's convenient of course lol 😂

ipswichwitch · 13/05/2021 17:30

the80sweregreat There’s a family in the states that built their own private village, with cabins next to each other for them and their teen kids here

You could do this, on a grander scale with a pool! I’d love it. DH would get his own cabin so I don’t have to cope with his dubious interior design any more 😂

Firstbornunicorn · 13/05/2021 17:34

I’d be happy to win 250k. It would sort out plenty in my life without causing the issues that loads of money sometimes can.

If I won millions, I’d try to get rid of a heap of it by paying off family mortgages etc.

BakewellGin1 · 13/05/2021 17:37

I 100% agree..
A lottery win would secure a forever home
Buy a new car
Pay credit cards off
Improve MH in my family/parents
Allow private care for ill grandparent
Allow me to work less hours in a job I enjoy
Have a good social life
Oh and I would have some land with Stables, horses and ponies and transport to hack and do beach rides
Then there is the holidays and trips...

Cassilis · 13/05/2021 17:44

I’ve never bought a lottery ticket and don’t really think about it. It seems so far out of the bounds of reality that it just doesn’t occur to me. Of course if I see an MTV Crib style home I drool!m

I have a BIL who resents anyone with even a modest sum of money and seems to enjoy telling us what he would buy us if he won the lottery. Puts me right off.

the80sweregreat · 13/05/2021 18:09

My own private village! It's a great idea isn't it?
I don't dislike dh or boys enough to divorce him after my BIG WIN but our own space would be divine! Mind you, he'd just buy a big motor bike and go off anyway I'm sure ( more space for me plus I won't be going pillion or side car!!)
Oh to have money eh? .. dream on.

Shmithecat2 · 13/05/2021 18:11

Just the Thunderball would do me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Northernsoullover · 13/05/2021 18:18

Fantasising about a lottery win is one of my favourite pastimes. Once a month a buy one of those expensive scratchcards that you can win a million on but I leave it until I'm due to buy my next one before scratching it off. That way I never have to stop dreaming Grin.

JustLyra · 13/05/2021 18:25

Also, I don’t understand people who say that if they gave up their job due to a lottery win they’d be bored

And surely even if you did have a lot of time on your hands it would be much nicer and better to find a voluntary thing you wanted to do rather than be stuck in a random job (given that the vast majority of people don’t get up every day thinking “yay!!! Work!!”).

@BettyUnderswoob

My father used say, 'Money isn't everything, unless you have none.'

He was a wise man.
My father, on finding himself divorced and alone, but treating himself because he was quite well off, said 'Money may not buy happiness, but it certainly buys a better standard of misery!'

brilliant quote!

I think a big win has the potential to cause extreme stress.

I'd want about £5m in order to both retire and enjoy the sort of lifestyle we already do, with the sort of home we'd both like. We don't have extravagant tastes so not interested in mansions and yachts whatsoever.

The stressful part would come from friends and family. I'd prefer to tell nobody at all. However if I won more than £5m I'd give financial gifts to our closest family and friends on the provision a legal agreement be signed to maintain secrecy. I wouldn't want extended family or other friends to know.

I think a lot of people encounter issues because they immediately splash the cash on flash and fancy houses, cars, jewellery etc without a thought for how they're going to maintain them for the rest of time, and coupled with the stress of people wanting from you all the time I can well see how some have seen it as a curse.

I'd give up work but I'd still do something as I think we need some sort of purpose for our wellbeing, and continually being on holiday wouldn't appeal to me as it'd stop being something special or exciting very quickly. It's also a lonely life as the people around you can't join you.

everydayiwritethebook · 13/05/2021 18:36

I would be terrified to win the mega euromillions jackpot - there's absolutely no way that the press wouldn't find out, and I feel like you would be forced into living a life like someone in witness protection!
I think there should be more smaller prizes, still substantial, like a couple of millions, which would still be life changing for the vast majority of people.
I consider myself quite lucky as we're not badly off, mortgage paid off some years ago, (I'm old!), and enough put by for a comfortable retirement.
I was just listening to the news, about Cameron and his sleazy dealings, and it struck me that for some people a fortune is never enough, they're driven by greed. I'd hate to be like that. For me, health is the most important thing. My husband has a chronic incurable degenerative illness, and no amount of money can make that better. I just thank goodness we don't have a health care system like America - we would probably be destitute.

I read a news story about a wedding where a lottery scratch card was placed on each table. One of the tickets revealed a huge win and a drunken fight amongst the family started over who it belonged to. In a fit of rage, one of the guests shredded the ticket and Camelot declared it void.

I'm not sure what the moral of that tale is.

Oh no! What a nightmare. I'd be miserable forever if I won but i couldn't claim it !! Can you imagine?
Brainfogmcfogface · 13/05/2021 18:42

YANBU at all! My life literally revolves around money and my lack of it. When I do have nice dreams it’s always about winning/finding/being given millions and how wonderful life would be. I say it every day, please let me win this week, in the hopes of that ‘if you speak it it will happen’ thing coming true.. but sadly will still be collecting a parcel from a food bank tomorrow..

SmileyClare · 13/05/2021 18:43

I don't suppose anyone is speaking to the ticket shredder now Grin

SmileyClare · 13/05/2021 18:45

Sorry Brainfog that's tough. I understand that awful feeling of trying to make your money stretch to cover everything and always being short x

No! I wouldn't !!
the80sweregreat · 13/05/2021 18:52

Oh brain I'm sorry !
I hope things look up for you soon.
I'm sure they will.

Theghostofchristmasarse · 13/05/2021 19:08

Oh love a Lottery win fantasy...

I think 100% of my problems could be solved...

I'd pay off my mortgage 250k, I'd be able to stop worrying about cash halfway during the month
Buy out Exdh, 100k, or buy him somewhere, stop feeling guilty that he's renting and he could buy a lovely place for the kids to stay
Buy my parents their house that's being sold by the landlord so they didn't have to rent...so I wouldn't worry about them..400k
Help my friend out, she's brassic...I'd do it anon though
Buy a new car so I don't have to keep worrying about it breaking down
Pay off my bfs debts and give him money to do his place up so it's nicer when I stayed 😂
I wouldn't give up work, I love it...but I'd start my business teaching craft workshops with help so when I retired in 5 to 10 years I would still be able to teach without the massive stress of classroom teaching.
Hire a cleaner
Pay someone to repair and finish decorating my house so I didn't have to break myself doing it all alone
Pay a personal trainer to get me fit and pay a babysitter so I could go running

Oh and a lovely long holiday with bf and then one with the kids....

Yeah, I'd be sorted. Would need about 1mil. That's not too greedy right?!
