Leaving Airbnb like you found it ?

Having major work done at home and have moved into Airbnb for three months. Agreed with owners a "special" rate outside of Airbnb and use of storage facilities for furniture.. The rate is still high but not as high as it would have been via Airbnb. During this time the owners have dug up the garden making it unusable for the last month of our stay (wasn't agreed initially and I was just informed about it whilst staying here). I have agreed a leaving date with the owners a few days prior to bank holiday weekend allowing them to rent it out at full price. I've now received a text asking me to leave the place as I've found it. I was planning to strip beds and ensure place was clean but not in the same condition as found (as in ready for a new guest). I've got two small kids and won't have the time to make the place ready for new guests ... I'm also not staying for free ... am I bring a CF or are they and how would you respond ?

Sounds like they are being CF to me! They've had 3 months guaranteed let at a good rate. I think they should clean it properly for the next guests. I would just leave it tidy and clean but not go OTT. Did you pay a deposit?

They can get a cleaner in that’s what normal people do. Yes leave it clean (and replace any damages) but it’s up to them to make it as they want for new customers.

Ask them what they mean by that? Agree it sounds like they are being CFs!

if I'd left the last airbnb I stayed in as I found it, I'd have had to leave a thong hanging on a doorknob Grin

I would leave it tidy, and a basic level of clean. Like hoovered, washing up done and the bathroom cleaned. Presumably you've been cleaning it while you were living there anyway. I wouldn't do a deep clean though, that's what you're paying them for.

This, just like any self catering I stay in. They often request a certain amount of cleanliness like washing up done etc in their blurb.

YANBU. Did you pay a cleaning fee? Have you complained about the garden in writing?

Washing up done, beds stripped, bins put out and a quick wipe over the benches. That’s all that’s required, then they should get a professional cleaner in.

They’re being CFs. I would leave it basically clean and tidy but it’s not your job to deep clean / make up beds etc. That is their responsibility as the owners of the property, definitely not yours.

You've gone off Airbnb so you can leave it however you want to with no consequence unless you've given them a deposit - which would have been foolish with no contract in place
No of course you don't leave it as you found it. You leave it clean and tidy and they pay someone or clean it themselves to be ready to let.

I think there is usually a cleaning fee applied to the booking.

They are really taking the Mick. Do you have any contract of sorts to fall back on? It's up to them to clean in between guests. Whatever next, will they expect you to put another coat of paint on in the hallway or replace the washer on a leaky tap?

I've got an Air BNB. During this last hideous year we've had people staying for longer-term periods, usually while they move house / wait for a rental flat and so on, due to general upheaval. I wouldn't expect any guest - long OR short term - to clean! We have never had a guest clean and I have been running it for 3 years. Just take out the rubbish and do the washing up. Stripping the beds and putting the towels in a pile would be a bonus, but not necessary.

Perhaps the owners haven't had longer-term guests before and are wary about what they might find when they go in? (You sound extremely responsible by the way, so if they do it's their mistake, I'm sure.)

We have had 'guests' leave ALL their rubbish all over the floor (apparently didn't know what a bin was) including used SanPro. So as long as you don't do that, all good!

And as PP have said, you're off Air BNB so all bets are off in any case. Just leave it in a decent state and you're OK.

Complete CF's.

They are greedy and lazy having had a three month rental.

The house will need a good cleaning but your job is to leave the kitchen tidy with everything put away, strip beds, quick hoover, that is it.

The cheek of them.

Don't even discuss it.

I think you have possibly misunderstood, basically bins emptied, washing up done and put away and not three months worth of grime left behind.

I once cleared an Air bnb perfectly. The guy thanks me and off I go. Four hours later, he calls me CRYING. Really. His wife was crying in the background, too. My DD2 had been sick in his knicker drawer. He wanted me to drive back.
I had to pay 60 € fine.

I think I'd have cried too. I came home once after letting my house for the night and found someone had puked in the bathroom and 'cleaned' it with a towel. I binned the towel but charged them for a new toilet seat mostly from spite but there was sick in the crevices that I refused to clean.
The annoying thing was that I'd let to a group of friends once and they left a mess so I resolved never to do that again. This was a family going to a wedding but it turned out there were two teens and I assume one of them had drunk too much. Could have been one of the parents though I guess!! Dirty bastards whoever they were.

I once got a bad review on Airbnb for leaving crumbs on the countertop, I had paid a €60 cleaning fee for a tiny studio apartment.

I agree to clean to the same standard you would expect in a self catering stay. Bins emptied, beds stripped, washing up done and generally tidy - but I wouldn’t be scrubbing the place to within an inch of its life.

Have you paid a hefty deposit for the property?

froggy is correct, a cleaning charge can be applied on Airbnb too.

You haven’t got an AirBnB though, you’ve made a private rental agreement with the owners - a short term tenancy effectively. Have you paid a cleaning fee in your rental agreement? If not, I would certainly expect you to leave it as you found it. If a cleaning fee, as is usual in an AirBnB, has been paid then I would leave it tidy but I certainly wouldn’t be giving it a deep clean.
