What time do you have your roast dinner?

I’ve just put the pork in the oven, aiming for about 3pm.

When I first met DH it used to drive him nuts that we’d go to my parents for a big family roast mid afternoon. His dinner time was always very firmly midday or evening.

But roast dinners have always been a mid afternoon thing in my family. He got used to it and now it’s just standard.

Is it weird though?

AIBU to always have a mid afternoon Sunday lunch?

1pm or 6.30pm. Used to always be lunchtime when the kids were younger but now mostly evening.

Parker231 · 09/05/2021 10:31

We go out for brunch on Sunday’s and then have a snack at about 7 or 8pm when we get home. We’re always out over the weekend so wouldn’t want a meal at home in the middle of the afternoon.

KaleJuicer · 09/05/2021 10:32

6pm

Strugglingtodomybest · 09/05/2021 10:35

I've voted yabu only because it sounds very inflexible. YANBU to have it at 3pm but yabu to think it always has to be at 3pm.

We eat ours at whatever time is convenient for that day.

5.30pm, as it's teatime? I'm curious to people who eat it at 2/3 ish? Is this classed as lunch or tea? Do you eat lunch at the normal time (12/1ish) or wait until your roast is ready and be super hungry? So many questions Grin

Sacreblue · 09/05/2021 10:42

Depends on other activities during the day. Mostly mid afternoon (as a hang over from childhood church Sundays) but I’ve also shared a plate of slow cooked roast beef with a little bit of salt at midnight on occasion 😋

Anytime between 1pm-3pm don't like to eat late and we have time for seconds !

OnceUponAThread · 09/05/2021 10:45

I tend to do a roast between 3-4pm usually as a sort of hybrid lunch / dinner (like brunch but for the afternoons).

I find with an enormous meal like a roast I'm eating enough food / calories for lunch and dinner and so I just need the one meal.

If I have it for lunch I'll be greedy and snack at about 8pm / 9pm (even though I don't need the food).

I can't last with no lunch until 8pm if I plan one for supper, and with a proper lunch I'm then not hungry enough for the roast later.

So we normally have breakfast at 10ish. And then I cook for 3/4pm, eat a leisurely, long, big roast, and then don't need an extra evening meal.

Works well for us.

It is flexible! I just prefer it.

Sometimes when I’m working DH will cook it and we’ll eat at 6pm. Or I’ll have a roast at work.

But mid afternoon is my go to.

If we go to family for a big roast it would be 1pm
If having a roast at home we would have it 5ish.

But mid afternoon is my go to

What and when do you eat between your 3pm roast and bed time?

cricketmum84 · 09/05/2021 10:55

Usually between 5-6 here. Although my mum and my in-laws will always serve around 2pm. Pre covid I would find it so stressful if they were coming round on a Sunday to have everything ready for their referred time.

(Yes I know I'm a walkover but sometimes it's easier just to go along with it 😂)

Beachhuts90 · 09/05/2021 11:03

7 or 8pm like a normal dinner for us. I prefer to eat lighter during the day and have the biggest meal at the end.

Roodicus21 · 09/05/2021 11:07

Having mine at around 3pm today

dementedpixie · 09/05/2021 11:11

7ish probably
Couldn't eat a big meal earlier in the day

teenagetantrums · 09/05/2021 11:12

3pm is my preferred time. Up late on a Sunday late breakfast then lunch about 3pm. Later leftover meat sandwiches.
When kids where little it would be about 5.30 to fit in with sports activities and birthday parties ect.
Now it's just me and DP mid afternoon suits us.

D afternoon here

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/05/2021 11:14

Growing up Sunday lunch was always 12 on the dot
We used to do a lunch roast but it never was ready before about two
Gave up on that and now we have it for dinner about 6.30ish
Suits us much better

ivfbabymomma1 · 09/05/2021 11:14

I keep to the 3 standard meals times on a Sunday but the roast could be for either lunch or dinner it doesn't matter!

Vetyveriohohoh · 09/05/2021 11:15

Sorry, mid afternoon

Vetyveriohohoh · 09/05/2021 11:16

2 meals on Sunday if doing a roast, brunch mid morning then roast around 3pm

CoastAlong · 09/05/2021 11:16

1-2pm would be about the latest for Sunday lunch here on the rare occasion we would eat a large meal at lunchtime. We would usually have a Sunday roast in the evening, at around 7-8pm. I don't think I'd want to eat it at 3pm as it would break up the afternoon too much.

Parker231 · 09/05/2021 11:18

Trying to work out when we last had a roast - think it was Christmas

Bewareoftherabbits · 09/05/2021 11:19

I really dislike Sundays and like to be out all day to distract myself from them, so the thought of being at home and eating a huge meal any time before 7 is not something I could do

I just can't eat big meals during the day time, it has to be evening.

But I'm glad others enjoy the tradition 😊

AnUnoriginalUsername · 09/05/2021 11:20

2-3ish. Big dinner doesn't work earlier or later. You're either cooking another meal later or over full still by bedtime.
