Reed want to see my husband's bank statements 😩

Desperate to get back into the workplace after 10 years out being a SAHM. Plucked up the courage to go for a Reed interview for a teaching assistant job (no qualifications required even though I have a BSc). Was told I had too much of a gap in my CV and they would need to see my husbands bank statements to “prove that I had been supported by him during this time”. I feel this is a total invasion of our privacy, what has my husbands finances got to do with whether or not I am capability of being a teaching assistant?? Am I being completely unreasonable refusing to provide this? They said they can’t give me a job unless I show his bank statements 😩

It's because it's a pointless check that proves nothing. They are wanting information that is irrelevant

TSSDNCOP · 08/05/2021 11:59

My correction. It was @moynomore

User6587324 · 08/05/2021 12:00

Probably Reeds box ticking exercise, people are sometimes so desperate for a job they will just hand anything over.

Sweak · 08/05/2021 12:01

I'm a sahm (until this Sept). I have been at home with my children since 2017. I had an interview for a teaching job two weeks ago. I got the job, at interview they simply asked to me explain the gap so they could write it on the paperwork. I obviously have to do an enhanced DBS. No one asked me anything about bank statements. I know my gap is smaller than yours but I think someone at Reed has the wrong end of the stick. I think you should speak to a manager. I don't see how your husband's bank statements prove anything other than he's been working.

On a side note reed is not a great place to look for a TA job. Contact the local teaching supply agencies, look on eteach and tes jobs

Viviennemary · 08/05/2021 12:01

Its cheeky. I bet they are in violation of data protection. Tell them your DH is unwilling to share the information. Its discrimination I'd say. Thry are on dodgy ground.

StaffRepFeistyClub · 08/05/2021 12:02

What a load of bollocks! Reeds can’t give jobs as they are a middle man. Schools hate using agencies because of the cost - agencies are a drain on our budgets and whenever possible we avoid agencies.

If you want a school job the best bet is to keep visiting school websites as they post jobs there plus school fb and Twitter feeds. Also look on the TES for non teaching school based jobs.

@AccidentallyOnPurpose

It's scary how many people are so happy to provide all kinds of private documents based purely on an assumption that it is reasonable and a flimsy excuse.
I've been thinking the same! I'm actually shocked at the number of people who seem to think this is in any way ok!

I don't think I mentioned money laundering?
TSSDNCOP · 08/05/2021 12:03

Agh apologies again this time for @Ohnomoreno

TurquoiseDragon · 08/05/2021 12:04

@purpleclaire

Just go on your local council website and search for School Vacancies. You should see a choice of jobs that you can apply for, directly through the schools themselves.
If you're in Nottinghamshire or Leicestershire, then you need to register with "East Midlands Shared Services". That's where you'll find the school jobs (and other council jobs).

dementedpixie · 08/05/2021 12:05

It was Ohnomoreno that mentioned money laundering

GravityFalls · 08/05/2021 12:06

Right, @AccidentallyOnPurpose. Just because a lot of people ask for Thai stuff doesn’t mean you should just smile and hand it over, and it’s because someone else did it happily doesn’t mean you can’t question it!

I’ve had many many DBS checks and applied for many teaching jobs and bank statements have never entered into it anywhere. I’m divorced and my exH lives in another country - I can just imagine asking him for 10 years worth of bank statements! In that time I’ve worked full time, part time, done supply, been on income support, found another partner...someone else’s bank statements would tell you fuck all about my life. God knows how some untrained admin person in a recruitment agency is supposed to do forensic accountancy on these documents.

GlitteryDickBomb · 08/05/2021 12:07

Absolutely wrong. Go to another agency.

Why on earth do they need to know how you've supported yourself over the last 10 years! You ve been open about the gap on your CV, they don't need to know anything else. There will be background checks to make sure you haven't spent 10 years in prison but the DBS will deal with that paperwork, not Reed.

Reed are not a a good agency. They pay their consultants minimum wage, therefore they don't attract good recruitment consultants.

TSSDNCOP · 08/05/2021 12:07

You can also register with TES.

TurquoiseDragon · 08/05/2021 12:07

@OhWhyNot

TurquoiseDragon

That’s your choice. I work with very vulnerable people. I understand that as much background checks need to be carried out as possible.

I’m not sure why others find that so scary Hmm

I used to work in the MOD, security cleared and all that. Still didn't have to hand over my ex's bank statements.
TSSDNCOP · 08/05/2021 12:08

Thank you @dementedpixie third time's charm Wink

It's a Saturday and she has DC, might be all sorts of reasons why she isn't instantly available just because you want answers right now.
callmeadoctor · 08/05/2021 12:09

Is this true though? (OP hasn't come back?)

OhWhyNot · 08/05/2021 12:10

Ok I shall mention that to my NHS Trust HR department

Ohnomoreno · 08/05/2021 12:12

@TSSDNCOP not RTFT sorry, so not quite sure what the issue is, but I was screened by Reed for a job with a global bank. They went through all the same checks, and I suspect whoever outsourced the betting to them just opted in to whatever Reed says is "enhanced vetting", which includes AML checks and now also includes tax checks. They are checking for any undeclared income, including for example types of employment people may omit from their CV for whatever reason.
When I started work I had to declare any non fund share trades performed by any family member, and there didn't seem to be any GDPR issues with that. When they asked for my kids birth certificates I told them I would redact the names and just provide the certificate with the DOB. They were ok with that.

TSSDNCOP · 08/05/2021 12:15

@Ohnomoreno so a completely different field. Having worked in finance I agree those checks are absolutely common and annually declared.

The OP is applying for a TA post and others are NHS. AML and share dealing declarations absolutely not required.

Jaxhog · 08/05/2021 12:16

It isn't required for a full DBS check. (I have one and have never been asked even for employment details).

I would also agree that this would be violating your DH's privacy.

TSSDNCOP · 08/05/2021 12:18

Although I have had to declare no outstanding VAT to apply as an overseas sponsor to Immigration (which you'd think they'd be able to check quite easily). Maybe they've outsourced too Grin

If you work with very vulnerable people I'd much rather want to know that you are someone capable of rational thought, questioning things and the legality of them , common sense etc. Your ability to jump with no concern when someone half official says so, it's frankly a lot more concerning .
