AIBU?

Reed want to see my husband's bank statements 😩

Desperate to get back into the workplace after 10 years out being a SAHM. Plucked up the courage to go for a Reed interview for a teaching assistant job (no qualifications required even though I have a BSc). Was told I had too much of a gap in my CV and they would need to see my husbands bank statements to “prove that I had been supported by him during this time”. I feel this is a total invasion of our privacy, what has my husbands finances got to do with whether or not I am capability of being a teaching assistant?? Am I being completely unreasonable refusing to provide this? They said they can’t give me a job unless I show his bank statements 😩

@Bythemillpond

I am amazed how many people would hand over financial records and documentation to a random stranger because they asked for it.
Just because someone said they might find you work.

You need to bear in mind the OP was talking about handing over someone elses data too.

Well, who did that?

MrMuckersaid they did, a couple of pages back. Somebody else said they provided ten years of bank statements to another employment agency. And another poster said she thought that was normal for recruitment to NHS posts to ensure employee’s husbands aren’t secretly in gangs (it isn’t). So at least three people just on this thread.

And lots more people said they thought it was totally fine and a normal part of recruitment, and OP’s DH was being previous objecting to it.

I haven't RTFT, but OP, if you are still looking at this. There aren't many posts advertised directly by the schools for TAs. Try and find out which agency the local schools use and join them. (Not agencies like Reed etc, but a specific school staff agency).

This is flat out insanity for them to ask for this. There is no logical reason to have his bank statement at all. None of their business and not relevant to YOUR job application.
If they want to pay you into an account they just need a name and account number, NOT a statement. This is dodgy as hell.
Complain to the highest level you can and then stay the F away from that company/organisation.

Years ago, I had a six month career break to go travelling

Upon return, I was offered a job. Was told my employment references were insufficient and that I had to get a lawyer or doctor to verify my gap

I did provide character references - a board member of my previous job - but the person was not professional enough. Could I ask my GP? I don't think I even had one at the time

I told them no, withdraw the offer if they want to

They soon changed their mind

I wouldn’t say well done to the person on here from Reed. Yet again things are offered to be put right once there’s people complaining about it and slating the company. Pity they couldn’t work properly in the first place. All they want to do is make some money out of you.

Obviously it shouldn't have gone wrong in the first place but the next best thing is surely to put it right as soon as you find out about it? Why is that not a good thing by @AmyDavisReed ?

@YouLando

I'm glad this has been resolved, because the request from Reed was so utterly batshit wrong.
When I had a temporary Civil Service job through Brook Street I was asked to supply bank statements to Brook Street to 'prove' I'd been a SAHM for the period I said I had been out of the job market. I did think it was weird, but embarrassingly I just complied...wish I'd challenged it.

It’s not been resolved at all.

Hi *@Weepingwillowtree*,

I am the Content Marketing Manager at Reed and have just come across your post. I am slightly concerned about what you have posted on here, as this is NOT Reed's normal process. Please do NOT give anyone your husband's bank statements until we can get to the bottom of this for you. Please contact me directly [email protected] and I will investigate this further. Best wishes, Amy

You're only slightly concerned? Get more concerned, fast. Hmm

They need to ensure you aren’t hiding any employment during that time.They will be checking that there isn’t another income being hidden. They really don’t care about anything else on the statements.

Bollocks! How would her husbands bank statements show if she had a job? They wouldn't./

I said I was asked for 10 years of bank statements for a civil service job.... I'm now thinking i might have got it wrong in my head. I've just gone back to check - it was 6 years (the total time I've been self employed). So 72 statements in total which I downloaded from online banking.

To the person who asked, it was a 3 month job in the Civil Service (on a Civil Service contract), recruited through Adecco.

Given you only have to keep records for 6 years I can’t see how you could provide 10 years of bank statements unless you are a hoarder.

Or an immigrant...Blush
I have 13 years of paperwork... Including some psyslips from like 2008🙈

This whole page is nuts. People being asked for, and supplying (!) their children's birth certificates!! 10 years' of bank statements! And thinking all this is perfectly normal! There is no legal obligation to record criminal offences, still less to actively investigate and report them. The world has gone mad.

No do not show them your DH/P bank statements .Have they asked in writing? If not tell them too. I would then put in a complaint to head office . The questions they asked you too . Why not apply to schools directly for a job? Even if they are not advertising get a clear non waffley cv together. Include a brief resume if you 8 sentences and bullet point your skills so it’s easy to read no more than 2 A4 sheets. being a mum gives you lots more relevant experience too. Then once you sent cv’s off follow up with phone calls two weeks later approx . Ask to pop in for a chat for them to see your suitability for the role abd say you’d love a look around the school etc . Good luck, you can do it x
