To be obsessed with listing for peoples old sofas

So you feel you need a new sofa, but instead of paying to get the council to take your old sofa away or a waste company you think I'll sell it on FB marketplace instead for nearly as much as you bought it for.

Personal favourites include photos of stains, where cats have scratched it. Listing must contain, just needs a clean then clean you dirty animal , plenty of life left.

The ones I find interesting are the ones that say they are only a few weeks old, colour doesn't suit or is too big for the room etc etc.

Who can replace a sofa that soon? Who is that daft to buy the wrong size and colour?

Are they stolen?

I've never thought of any ulterior motives, I've always just thought it's people with money but no common sense! (But there seems quite a few of them!)

Aprilshowersandhail · 07/05/2021 20:56

What else should I have done with it? Council workers had naff all to do here...
Yet my council tax remained the same..

So did mine, but I don't flytip. I take it you were dragged up 🙄

Someone was offering a tub chair free to good home and all that crap and it only had three legs 🙈 it was like they were doing someone a favour

I often wonder about this too. The other day I saw a woman advertising a Dyson Air Wrap hair styler which costs about 450 quid new. It was pink. She wanted 300 for it, said it was only two months old and she was only selling because she was changing it for the purple version.
Hmm

When I commented 'Seriously? You are selling a virtually brand new Air Wrap just because you want a different colour?' she just responded

'Yes.'

Confused
TamzinGrey · 07/05/2021 21:34

I know exactly what you mean. My local FB pages are flooded with crap sofas that people are trying to get rid of. Here's a recent example.

@Aprilshowersandhail

During lockdown our tip was shut.. Shoved ours outside the back gate and told the council it had been dumped.. They came the same day. Wasn't technically a lie!!
Well done you!

Fly-tipping costs hundreds of thousands of pounds in clearance charges each year - money that ultimately comes out of council tax payers' pockets

We've just bought one like that. Mahoosive 'snuggle chair' from Next. Current line. £1000 new. Pale grey velvet. We paid £200 quid! Too good to be true? Well we looked for the catch but there wasn't one.

It's absolutely spotless. I mean pristine . Supposed to be a year old, in a tiny new build property ...

maybe it was nicked! Shock didn't think of that!
@threeteenstaximum Read again. It’s people’s old sofas, not old people’s sofas!
🤣 🤣

StoneofDestiny · 07/05/2021 22:28

Yes Laiste, I suspect all sorts is stolen on Marketplace that sounds too good to be true, but I couldn't see how you steal a sofa (unless some finance swindle or to dodge the bailiffs getting it). There does seem to be a lot of them.

CirclesWithinCircles · 08/05/2021 00:13

I personally think its regional. Newcastle residents seem to replace their perfectly nice, modern, glossy kitchens quite frequently and sell off the old units and items cheaply.

Where I live, sofas are replaced often and some real bargains are to had. This week, I've seen a beautiful striped Barker and Stonehouse sofa in great condition and very clean advertised for free, along with a very fine DFS footstool, also free. Both went quickly, and although I was tempted, I already have a second hand Duresta sofa in my living room and another one which was kindly wrapped in plastic for me by the seller in an outbuilding as a spare. I was still tempted though.

When I lived abroad, second hand sofas were expensive and rare, and you often had to have quite a poor one that you shell out 400 euros for second hand.

I dream of running a second hand sofa store, but it wouldn't work in this country.

What a scummy thing to do. What if the council hadnt come to collect it? It's fly tipping pure and simple. And you act like its something to be proud of. Just wow.
sofan · 08/05/2021 03:16

Maybe if you have lots of money the sofa would be binned. But my 'new sofa' was one a friend was getting rid of amd was used so not really sellable but I've had for a while now and love it because it was my only option of nee furniture. Others even free I couldn't afford the delivery. No one has to buy it but some times someone will appreciate things like that

Fly tipping causes so much misery on our local Nextdoor. So many complaints. My council tax is £2k+ but wouldn't dream of doing this. Not clever, sly.

I don't think anyone has said all sofas should be binned, it's more about unrealistic selling prices for old sofas.
Asherline · 12/05/2021 01:41

@StoneofDestiny I don't know how you steal a sofa. But brand new beds, sofas, BBQs etc are bought from the back of a van. Absolute bargain but you can't question where it's from.

Peridotty · 12/05/2021 01:51

How about this beauty I saw today on FB. It is listed as ‘good’ and ‘lightly used. This is a very comfortable chair. The upholstery flakes, but if you put a blanket over it, it looks fine’

Fuck me. Lightly used 😂
BathwaterBaby · 14/06/2021 13:16

John Lewis Sofa stunning, very good condition!. No Seat cushion, can be made easily by purchasing foam. Tiny speckles on back cushion- have no negative effect!

@threeteenstaximum

Whaaat?? Are you shaming someone who is trying to sell their elderly parent's sofa? If might not be a bargain as much as they think but really?

Post it on Reddit as shaming older people really isn't a MN thing

Is that the sweat stain of someone’s bollocks on that gaming chair?! 😦
