To want people to calm my baby by his actual name?

SimGuruRu · 07/05/2021 07:59

Name change as outing. To avoid the inevitable “what’s his name” replies ... he’s called Brian, hence outing.
He’s 6 weeks old and friends and family seem unable to call him by his actual name. They make up stupid names for him “baby Bobo” for example, I’ve had people literally snigger when I say his name. MIL has outright told us it’s an awful name for a baby and she can’t say it without laughing.
I’ve told DH I’m getting to the point where I feel if people can’t call him by his name maybe they shouldn’t be seeing him?! He thinks this is an overreaction and that I’m being too dramatic. They are going to make him grow up hating his own name.

My husbands name is Brian he was born in 1940 so old as someone else said. I was reading out your post OP to him last night and he said there is nothing wrong with the name you made a good chose. His older sister was called Dorothy and has always been called Dolly which seems to be coming popular. I am afraid I would be saying if they can't say a nice thing about his name they won't be seeing him.

Quincie · 08/05/2021 16:05

for our DD - ferret, chicken, the dowager countess, c-lo, Beryl.

Sounds awful

eggandonion · 08/05/2021 16:40

I want to be called Dolly Maude, the name of Zara Phillips friend who delivered the baby in the bathroom.

Dh has a Scottish friend whose dd is called WeeMaud, twenty years ago Maud was a great aunt name.
Dd1 has just told me that the Brian's she knows are called Bazzer and Buddy. She has known Buddy since preschool, I thought his name was Bernard.

Nicolastuffedone · 08/05/2021 16:44

Have to admit, the only Brian I know is 76.....

Veryverycalmnow · 08/05/2021 16:45

I know a couple of Brians. One is in his 30s and one is 8. It might be fashionable soon. People are weird about names. It's fine.

RachelRaven · 08/05/2021 16:49

I went yo high school with a Martha in the 90’s. Awful, old fashioned name then.

Feather12 · 08/05/2021 16:53

I like it OP. My daughter’s best friend when she was little was Ryan, but she called him Bryan which is a far cuter name!

CliffsofMohair · 08/05/2021 16:56

@SoupDragon

I wonder if the old lady names such as Mavis, Ethel and Deirdre will be next?

"Old lady names" are already back. Violet, Mabel, Edith...

I live in Ireland and Deirdre (2 x r) is definitely not an old lady name.
eggandonion · 08/05/2021 17:08

I only know one Deirdre, in her late fifties. Multiple Fiadh around me, my boss's dd is 15,went to gaelscoil, but only knows one Fiadh.

mooonstone · 08/05/2021 17:31

Yeah there’s a popular singer called Mabel (songs such as fine lines, finder’s keepers) and her name hasn’t held her back. Probably helped to make her stand out, if anything

mooonstone · 08/05/2021 17:32

She’s 25 and British

HaveringWavering · 08/05/2021 17:34

And her Mum was a pop star (Neneh Cherry).
EasterEggBelly · 08/05/2021 17:55

At least he won’t have to worry about being ID’d.

PhannyPharts · 08/05/2021 18:00

The more I say Brian in my head the more I like how it sounds.

Congratulations on your baby and I think it's lovely you've named him after your grandad.

shouldistop · 08/05/2021 18:00

At least he won’t have to worry about being ID’d.

Sure.... because bouncers and shop keepers know your name without seeing your ID.
You were obviously trying to be clever at the expense of a new mother and her baby but you just made yourself look stupid.

Friedasunibrow · 08/05/2021 18:02

Brian is very unusual.

Wallabyone · 08/05/2021 18:15

People are very rude. I might think 'ooh, that's unusual for now', but why do people think they have the right to comment rudely? Also, Brian is very similar to Ryan, which is very popular. I've named my daughter after my mum (four letter name, old fashioned, starts with M), and I couldn't care less what people think. I like the fact that my children have family names.

Cactuslove · 08/05/2021 18:16

I love the names I picked but I still shorten them to Lulu and Maximoomoo!

Friedasunibrow · 08/05/2021 18:17

Is Ryan still popular, it was when I was in school in the 80’s but don’t see it much anymore, but yes whatever someone calls their baby the only appropriate response is ‘That’s nice’ even if you are thinking WTAF.

I’m 38. 5 x Deirdre in my primary school class. I think the name came to an abrupt stop around 1983. Wall to wall Fiadh round these parts too 😂 (Clare)

What could Maximoomoo be short for 🤣
Friedasunibrow · 08/05/2021 18:18

My DC had a Barbara in her class

HaveringWavering · 08/05/2021 18:18

Barbara is the name of David and Victoria Coren Mitchell’s daughter, who is 5.

Serpenta · 08/05/2021 18:21

Names like Barbara and Pamela, and Raymond and Stuart will be the next vintage naming trend. All the fashionable people will be looking for something different from all the Elsie/Stan names.

GappyValley · 08/05/2021 18:24

Her uncle is called Eagle-Eye, so it’s a safe guess that her family doesn’t feel bound by the top 100 baby name list

And her mum is Neneh Cherry, the famous pop star, and her dad is Cameron McVey, the famous record producer and songwriter, so I think we can probably assume it wasn’t her name that gave her a leg up into the industry...
