joystir59 · 07/05/2021 04:10

They are all over MN at the moment and making me feel nauseous tbh. Anyone else wish they'd stop being mentioned?
Yes= buttered parsnips should stop being mentioned on MN
No= buttered parsnips are delicious, even on mn

Never had them. We’ve only ever used olive oil and honey and roasted them.

Onesnowynight · 07/05/2021 05:00

Never had them only with honey, black pepper and olive oil. I may have to look them up though!

chaosrabbitland · 07/05/2021 05:03

i love buttered parsnips ,but why they would be getting mentioned a lot on here is a bit mad , i do agree its awful if a food that makes you feel sick is getting written about contantly though , id feel the same way if it were steaks for example

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 07/05/2021 05:23

if you don't like them, don't eat them? Hmm
first time I've seen them mentioned

UCOinanOCG · 07/05/2021 05:40

I am a prolific MN user and this is the first time I have seen buttered parsnips mentioned.

tobee · 07/05/2021 05:46

Yeah you're right op. Buttered parsnips have been mentioned a lot. Fine words.

It's an old fashioned saying so it's well weird that it's cropped up a couple of times that I've seen at least.

greyspottedgoose · 07/05/2021 05:51

they make me think of joe lycett and his parking ticket sketch, which I believe everyone should see 😂

I was thinking exactly the same thing GrinGrin
ZaraW · 07/05/2021 05:59

Never heard of them. YABU who cares?

I announced to my family that fine words butter no parsnips just last week and they had no idea what I was talking about. I tried to explain it and then gave up because they obviously thought I was making it up.
SaltAndVinegarSandwiches · 07/05/2021 07:16

Is this an in joke or innuendo I've missed? I've never seen buttered parsnips mentioned anywhere. I'd prefer them roasted personally.

TroysMammy · 07/05/2021 07:22

Are they on the Feminisim and Coronovirus boards which I've hidden because this is the first time I've seen buttered parsnips mentioned?

3scape · 07/05/2021 07:23

Fine words butter no parsnips op

User6587324 · 07/05/2021 07:24

I've seen it on the CV boards but it could be just one poster as it is the same posters on there a lot of the time

Heatherjayne1972 · 07/05/2021 07:24

The only reference I’ve seen was from joe lycett
The parking ticket sketch - very funny

RampantIvy · 07/05/2021 07:28

Funnily enough I have hidden those boards and haven't seen them mentioned either.

YANBU. I loathe parsnips. IMO they should be cattle fodder.

Me too! Parsnips and butter sound awful. I love parsnips roasted or boiled and served plain. Not sure why you would add butter to plain parsnips... they would be slimy?

I’m thinking the same now! 😳
x2boys · 07/05/2021 07:36

Yeah have seen it on the covid board,no idea of the reference
Aunt Bessie's Honey roasted parsnips are to die for.

Heatingsystemwoes · 07/05/2021 07:36

Just searched and other than recipes - nothing.
I want to know what the OP is on about. 😡

Heatingsystemwoes · 07/05/2021 07:45

Ok. Found it. On the Covid boards.
People are using the saying ‘Butter no parsnips’ re restrictions, jabs, testing etc.

The proverb 'Fine words butter no parsnips' means that nothing concrete is achieved by empty words or flattery.

The full expression is ‘fine words butter no parsnips’ meaning that words alone are useless, especially flattering phrases or fine promises, and you should judge people by what they do rather than by what they say.

Heatingsystemwoes · 07/05/2021 07:46

Irritating expression IMO.

Scarby9 · 07/05/2021 07:48

It reminds me of John Major - first time I, or anyone I knew, had ever heard the phrase.

Scarby9 · 07/05/2021 07:52
3:30 for the parsnip buttering. Enjoy.
Bimblybomeyelash · 07/05/2021 07:55

Hmmm I did see it once yesterday and thought it sounded Hastingsy. But I didn’t realise it was a ‘thing’.
