To have made DD give back the vending machine freebie?

DH thinks I am.

I allowed DD to buy some crisps from the vending machine at the swimming pool after her lesson. I paid for one packet. It dispensed two. I made her give the second one back to a nearby member of staff.

The leisure centre staff look after the vending machines and could restock it, so it would have felt dishonest to walk off with both packs. I wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't obvious who to give it to.

Was I right or a right mean mother?

I would have kept it as payback for all the times I've used a vending machine and my item got jammed!!
Meaning I ended up with no food and no money Grin

LubaLuca · 04/05/2021 19:59

You get a free thing every now and then to make up for the times when your item gets trapped against the glass and doesn't drop.

gamerchick · 04/05/2021 19:59

You'll remember this when one time the bugger gets stuck Grin

They know me as the trans man who made a great big hoo haa about being validated but intriguingly still has long hair and wears the occasional skirt.

I also arrived with DD in swimming gear when swimming lessons had finished for the term, not just once but two weeks in a row.

And now I'm the mad woman who steals crisps from her children.

Ah! Fabulous! Grin

You’re just getting a jump on the “When I am old I shall wear purple” thing. Wink (Never did understand what was so outre about purple, mind.)

TheCrowening · 04/05/2021 20:00

What flavour were they?

An0n0n0n · 04/05/2021 20:00

Make her give them to her brother....? What? Hmm

BlowDryRat · 04/05/2021 20:01

Walkers Cheese & Onion

Look at this way; When your doppelgänger commits a string of hideous crimes a few miles away, the fact that everyone knows you and your endearing eccentricities will ensure you have a watertight alibi, because they’ll all remember seeing you.

The mistake the suspects always make in crime dramas is being too beige.

Bancha · 04/05/2021 20:03

I can just imagine her celebrating her win, and then being absolutely crushed! Poor button! You owe her crisps for sure.

KevinTheGoat · 04/05/2021 20:04

I'd have kept it as compensation for all the times an item I bought got stuck in a vending machine.

Exactly. I think of this kind of thing as curating myself an eccentric vibe, it feels better than 'I'm bad at remembering dates and social engagement is hard' haha!

Whattt one of the best days of my life was on holiday in Spain, when I put money into the vending machine and it spat out SEVEN Twirls Grin

That was in 2008 and I still think of it fondly...

zzizzer · 04/05/2021 20:07

Was the trans man thing part of the Man Friday movement?

I hope so!
Funkopopper · 04/05/2021 20:10

There's a vending machine for chips?

Where? Why don't we have them here?

Pure raging now.

Lovemusic33 · 04/05/2021 20:12

I would have kept it. The amount of times I have had things get stuck in those things and lost my money, it’s about time they paid out. Wouldn’t have thought twice about taking the extra packet 🤣

Sallyandsam · 04/05/2021 20:14

I would have given it back too.

Yes! They are very confused about me.

I always give back change if I am given too much, and similar mistakes. But vending machines are a separate species and you don't have to apply the laws of honesty to them.

Mainly because given half a chance a vending machine will eat your money refuse to give you your item and there will be no one around to report it to. They are vicious buggers and should be given no lee way whatsoever.

Also I'm not sure that the staff do restock them - I think that job may well be outsourced, or done by the vending machine company (at least it used to be because it was my BIL's job) maybe different these days.
But regardless obviously the staff will have eaten them. Free cheese and onion crisps? - fuck honesty, scarf them down.

fourquenelles · 04/05/2021 20:18

@steff13

I consider myself a pretty honest person - if I accidentally walk out of the store with something without paying, I always go back; if Amazon sends me two of something I only paid for one of, I always call; etc. But I think vending machine freebies are just karma for all the times I put my money in and the stuff gets stuck on the way down. I don't usually keep it myself, because I don't need two Snickers or whatever, but I will give it to a passerby.
Me too but in my world that extra packet is what is known as "A RESULT!"
WhoIsH · 04/05/2021 20:18

YAB so U.

fizzycokezero · 04/05/2021 20:19

God I would probably have said to my dd "ooo how exciting - lucky us"

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 04/05/2021 20:20

@BlowDryRat

Don't worry about my DD, I can assure you she is allowed plentiful amounts of food and fun and isn't force-fed olives or hand-knitted lentils or required to read from Debrett's guide.

Have your grip back babe.

It wasn’t the possibility that she’s fed lentils or olives that made me think ‘ah, mate - you embarrassed your kid’.

It was the act of handing back a single pack of crisps and making a Holier Than Thou tit of yourself in the process that made my toes curl on your / her behalf.
