To think I'm weird, as DD doesn't sleep in sleepsuits?

rainybow18 · 03/05/2021 12:33

DD sleeps in sleeping bags, and they have always stated on the packaging what the suggestion is for baby to wear in different temperatures. It rarely suggests a sleepsuit, only if it's really cold, like 16 or 18 degrees I think.

Everyone I know seems to use sleepsuits in sleeping bags though. DD was summer born so I was very worried about overheating early on, but I'm wondering if I'm alone in not using sleepsuits for sleep?

Do those of you who use sleepsuits put a vest underneath too?

YABU - nah not weird, we don't use sleepsuits for sleep either
YANBU - the clue is in the name, why wouldn't you use them for sleep?

Do you have your heating on all night?

If not, the temperature is likely to drop to below that sort of level.

RedHelenB · 03/05/2021 12:35

No sleeping bags in my day, so vests, sleepsuits and cellular blankets for my 3. Youngest is now 14.

Seeline · 03/05/2021 12:38

Mine are 16 and 19 and had sleeping bags, but always had vest and sleepsuit on too. The youngest felt the cold and sometimes had a jumper on as well. Our house gets pretty chilly at night.

SacramentoQueen · 03/05/2021 12:38

It depends how thick the sleeping bag is - the advice on what to wear under a 1.0tog bag at 19/20 degrees is quite different on the advice for what to wear under a 2.5tog bag

Heyha · 03/05/2021 12:40

We used sleeping bags and sleepsuits because 16-18 is a really good temperature for a baby's room (definitely not 'really cold' the judgy Groegg doesn't go blue until 15.9 degrees 😂) and that's the clothes combo suggested by most of the sleeping bag guides.

Long sleeve vest and sleeping bag when it's nearer 20 all night but that's only a few months of the year, whenever summer decides to be.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 03/05/2021 12:47

Ours had grobags and they’re 17 and 18, I followed the advice from the company and they wore either a nappy, vest or sleep suit depending on the room temp in the thermometer and time of year

They even had the summer 1 tog bag for going on holiday

SunshineLollipopsRainbow · 03/05/2021 12:52

Mine wears a vest, sleepsuit, sleeping bag and crochet blanket!

Hankunamatata · 03/05/2021 12:55

Depends. In summer sometimes just a nappy or a vest.

Lemonelderflower · 03/05/2021 12:57

Same!

We use sleepsuits, but the house is kept at about 16 degrees (we did knock it up to 20 when we had a very tiny newborn). If we had a hotter house, she'd wear less, so I don't think you're BU at all.

AhaShakeHeartbreak12 · 03/05/2021 12:59

I use a vest, sleepsuit and then sleeping bag. I have various sleeping bags with different togs for the weather.

We had the heating on low overnight through winter but now we don't have the heating on and he sleeps comfortable in his sleepsuit and sleeping bag.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 03/05/2021 13:00

Unless it was cold I used to put mine in a long sleeved vest under the grobag. I think they were warmer bags though.

Chocolatefordinner · 03/05/2021 13:02

YABU to scrape the barrel for this AIBU topic.

You’ve answered your own question, read the label on the sleepsuit.

FlowerTink · 03/05/2021 13:03

My eldest never wore a sleepsuit to sleep in, and I currently have a 14mo DD who just wears a vest (long/short sleeve depending on temperature) with the sleeping bag and sleeps absolutely fine. I was always conscious about overheating and followed the guidance on the packaging.

NavigatingAdolescence · 03/05/2021 13:04

I’m 43 and was put to sleep in sleeping bags (apparently tied to the cot to prevent rolling/standing Shock).
Ihaveoflate · 03/05/2021 13:04

I follow chart that the grobags/similar suggest, e.g. vest, sleepsuit under bag for 16-18 degrees. I know the temp in my house drops by a few degrees overnight so I dress her accordingly.

Sally872 · 03/05/2021 13:07

Mine generally wore vest, sleepsuit and sleeping bag. If it was very hot I would not bother with babygrow but not often.

If your baby was cold they would he uncomfortable and wake up so I expect what you are doing is fine.

inappropriateraspberry · 03/05/2021 13:07

16-18 isn't that cold, it's a comfortable sleeping temperature. Please bare in mind that it gets cooler overnight as well. Unless you have the heating up really high (23+) or on all night, you need to put another layer on your baby.

shouldistop · 03/05/2021 13:10

Can't really answer unless you can tell us what temperature your house gets to overnight.

16 is on the cool side but 18 is just average. In fact in our house we'd need the heating on the get to 18 most of the year.

Baby ds wears a vest, sleep suit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag overnight and in the winter there we also had an oil heater in our room overnight. Don't think it got any warmer than 19 even with the heater.

WalkingMeAway · 03/05/2021 13:12

So just a nappy and a sleeping bag?!

I've always used sleepsuits along with a sleeping bag. In the colder months also a vest under the sleep suit.

In the summer a nappy and a short sleeve vest.

otterbaby · 03/05/2021 13:18

My daughter (7 months) wears a long sleeved vest and 1.0 tog sleeping bag. She is always toasty warm. She wore sleepsuits when she was a newborn but she doesn't need the extra layers now. House is normally around 18 at night.

Abouttimemum · 03/05/2021 13:26

Yes to the sleepsuit. I wouldn’t sleep with my arms bare at 16 degrees, they’d be tucked under the duvet. So I always cover DS arms, even now and he’s 2.

withsexypantsandasausagedog · 03/05/2021 13:38

Our house can get down to 14 degrees in the winter, so baby wears 3.5 tog bag. Long sleeves vest and pjs (used to be sleep suit until she wouldn't lie still long enough to pop it up!) Will switch to a 2.5 bag in the next few weeks when it hopefully warms up!

I followed the guide when she was newborn as I was so worried about SIDS but it seems like they err on the cold side!

apalledandshocked · 03/05/2021 13:43

Mine would always wear a sleepsuit because he liked to claw his face with his incredibly long nails as he slept and sleep suits had the little mits on. But then just covered with a crotched blanket as sleepsuit+sleeping bag meant he would be all sweaty and cross. So I think you are right. Anyway, you would know by now if they were too cold!

Now he is bigger he always throws the covers off his bed anyway. He looks cold to me but he says hes fine so...

FolkyFoxFace · 03/05/2021 13:50

Our house is warm, and DS gets sweaty if I have him in the sleepsuit and sleeping bag. He's toasty but comfortable in a long sleeved vest and a sleeping bag.

The first few weeks I really struggled with this because I was so anxious (he was a very small baby), but now he's chunkier and I've got to know him, he's fine like this. He cries if he's cold, which is very rare and usually of a morning when we've gone downstairs to a chilly morning room!
