As the title says is it wrong for an almost 4 year old to use the word crap?

You really shouldn't be saying crap in front of a small child. It's not ideal.
It sounds like your DP is pretty crap though.

georgarina · 03/05/2021 12:04

Def wouldn't want my 3yo saying it

ZoeMaye · 03/05/2021 12:04

My 4y DC was making some art out of bits found around the house.
I said "you didn't ask to use that"
"Sorry Mummy, I didn't think you mind it's just a load of old crap"
Made me laugh, didn't expect it. It's not a nice word but I can't get upset about it either IYSWIM?
Although my 4y and 7y DC have both used worse words than that, the older likes to teach the younger one all the new swear words they've learned.

Chocolatekrispy · 03/05/2021 12:05

I get it's wrong for a child to say it but kids do pick up a lot worse

It does sound wrong when small children swear, but I’d rather they swore (not cunt and the like) and spoke grammatically correct, than not swear but say things like “would of...”, “ain’t nobody”, “of a morning” etc. If for some odd reason I had to choose between the two.

Although, I didn’t even know crap was considered a swear word up until recently. I thought it was interchangeable with rubbish.

Only if you expose them to a lot worse.
starbrightstarlight8888 · 03/05/2021 13:10

I'd be horrified to hear a child say it tbh. I've never sworn in my whole life, I just don't like it.

Wanderlusto · 03/05/2021 13:14

Father in law said what to your 4 year old!?
Yeah well I wouldnt be taking my 4 year old anywhere near him in future for a start.

Chocolatekrispy · 03/05/2021 14:02

@Wanderlusto he said it in a joking way but I wasn't happy about it x

My 4yo called someone a silly bastard at my parents house. That was my dad's fault apparently.

I said something to her the other day and ended up swearing so she said "don't say that mummy" so she knows they are bad words and I'm much more careful.

I wouldn't say crap is too bad. But she says rubbish. She also says "what the hell/heck" a lot but that's apparently from a show on YouTube that's aimed at children but American.

Coldwine75 · 03/05/2021 14:42

Its not 'that' bad but i would discourage it

Coldwine75 · 03/05/2021 14:43

My ds said wanker once when he was 5, we were so shocked as we dont swear , we both told him off and he burst into tears , bless him i dont think he realised what he was saying! Must have picked it up at school maybe x

ToTheLetterOfTheLaw · 03/05/2021 14:51

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

Football here is watched as a family I took smallest to her first match ( league 1) at 9 months as was bf (with ear defenders) it's definitely not crap.

FunTimes2020 · 03/05/2021 14:53

Yes. It sounds chavvy.

Ericaequites · 03/05/2021 14:54

Yes

Snorkelface · 03/05/2021 14:57

OMG - I remember going to see Kramer v Kramer at the cinema (age alert!) and the little boy Billy says 'What is this crap?' in the film when picking at his food. My sister and I said it jokingly when we opened a bag of crisps in the car on the way home. Our dad was furious with us! I was about 10. Could have been worse, we could have chosen to say it when sitting down for our tea at home.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/05/2021 15:02

They say what they hear. Aged two ds started saying randomly "you wanker". I connected he said I when he heard a car hooter and traced it back to his very respectable father.

Aged three he came home and said he was going to piss on his shit. I raised it gently with nursery and was told "well he didn't pick it up here". He did.

At about 7 he started saying swear words like F, Bloody, etc, picked up at his nice, leafy cofe primary. DH sat him down with the dictionary and made him write them out, learn to spell them and learn the definitions. The only word he felt he couldn't do that with was the usually regarded as less serious, bugger. It took the mischief and naughtiness out of bad words.

Aged 12, he let "fuck" slip and I reprimanded and he eloquently told me "oh mummy, it's only Anglo Saxon for copulation".

He hasn't grown up using a swear word in every sentence.

ZednotZee · 03/05/2021 15:05

@FunTimes2020

It only sounds 'chavvy' if other things in your demeanour allude to the fact that you may actually be chavvy on the whole.

Its amazing what you can get away with saying when you are well spoken, well groomed and well mannered Smile

Bul21ia · 03/05/2021 15:07

It’s not the worst. But if I heard DS saying crap I would tell him not to!

I don’t think it’s considered a swear word across the pond. It gets said in Ice Age 2!
jellybe · 03/05/2021 15:32

They'd get told off for saying it when school age so I would try to stop them saying it now.

Personally I wouldn't like it but it's up to the parents.

Cryalot2 · 03/05/2021 15:42

I think in nurseries or schools this will be frowned upon .
I personally hate to hear adults let alone children use bad language.

Agree with this! Plenty of posh sweaters about.

picturesandpickles · 03/05/2021 15:48

SWEARERS not sweaters!

Chocolatekrispy · 03/05/2021 15:49

Can I just say I've not encouraged it she's said it once I said it and told her grandad who then said well mummy's crap, it's not something she says all the time lol
