To wonder why the packet tells you to boil it?

If you buy gnocchi, the packet will tell you to cook them by boiling them in salted water until they rise to the surface.

But having now tried them fried them in a tiny amount of oil instead (a tip-off from a friend), they are SOOOO much nicer; crispy, edged, soft little pillows with none of the stodginess of boiled (It certainly works for fresh gnocchi from the chiller; haven't tried it with long-life yet).

Anyone else fry their gnocchi?

AIBU to think that the accepted cooking instructions are simply wrong?

Nigella does.
Didn't she call them rapid rostini or similar?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/05/2021 23:32

They are simply the most common. They can't possibly have all options, imagine the packaging 😂 IT would be a short read compared to ot😂

steff13 · 02/05/2021 23:33

I boil then fry.

DotsandCo · 02/05/2021 23:37

I started frying after my Gousto recipe told me to...transformed my culinary experience no end! 👍🤣🥰

milinhas · 02/05/2021 23:39

I recommend roasting them on a tray with vegetables! Excellent.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/05/2021 23:41

@steff13

I boil then fry.
Same. The fry has to be on super hot pan then but they are delicious
Larryslockdownlunch · 02/05/2021 23:42

Love a bit of fried gnocchi. Yum

DartmoorChef · 02/05/2021 23:43

I simmer them then saute in garlic butter.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 02/05/2021 23:45

I put them in the oven with a very little oil. Crispy outside, soft II side. Often used as emergency roast potatoes!

TheHateIsNotGood · 02/05/2021 23:46

I had no idea about this and will give it a try. Thanks.

AdaColeman · 02/05/2021 23:50

I like them roasted with some garlic cloves tucked around them.

legalseagull · 02/05/2021 23:54

I had no idea you could fry them!!!! Thanks OP

Yes friend gnocchi is amazing - especially if you try it with spinach, pine nuts, tomato and creme fraiche

lighteincastlewindow · 03/05/2021 00:12

Gnocchi... fry them, boil them but really bin them, disgusting balls of stodge

mrsbyers · 03/05/2021 00:17

Boil , cool then fry in brown butter and sage leaves

ZenNudist · 03/05/2021 00:25

I fry them in salted butter, with sage if I have it.

themalamander · 03/05/2021 00:30

It's like ravioli. So much better fried or baked.

steff13 · 03/05/2021 00:39

When I finish them, I toss them in a little herbes de provence olive oil. It's the only way my kids will eat them. I like them with pesto.

Wow, I can feel my waistline growing already.

Wouldn't have occurred to me try this but I will now!

Me too, so much nicer fried, thanks Gousto! Lol

The Times recipe section on Saturday said to BBQ them with peppers and vegan pesto as it was in a vegan BBQ feature, so I'd imagine if not catering for vegans, the addition of halloumi, or even meat would also be good.

But cooking instructions are often wrong so feel free to ignore. I don't think anyone with a fairly recent oven needs to switch it on until far later than the first instruction and the cooking times for microwave meals and many fish, seafood and meat are far too long.

Classic being the likes of tuna and scallops, which are much nicer served charred on the outside and more or less raw in the middle so only need a minute or two on each side, not the 3-4 minutes a side the instructions suggest. OTOH, just about every frozen potato product needs at least 50% more time than the instructions say.

I bet a lot of people who think they 'can't cook' are following cooking instructions to the letter and then wondering why the food is not very good.

KatherineJaneway · 03/05/2021 05:48

I thought the standard way to cook them was to boil then fry.

RebelByLight · 03/05/2021 05:53

I've never seen a packet that doesn't give both as a cooking instruction.

MassDebate · 03/05/2021 08:18

Boiled: disgusting balls of stodge
Fried in butter: crispy, fluffy food of the Gods

YANBU!
