AIBU?

To pick at my dinner over a long period of time

Anyone else the same? I'm never able to sit and have a big meal in one sitting but I could finish it over the course of the night by just picking at it even if it's cold. I've even seen myself not being able to finish it that night and having the rest for breakfast/lunch the next day. Anyone else?

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Just cook and serve yourself portion you can eat. That's a problem sorted?
Obviously the portions are big for you. Everyone has different appetite

Agree, no need for the drawn outness of making a 'normal' portion meal lasting 3 meals I've even seen myself not being able to finish it that night and having the rest for breakfast/lunch the next day.
MrsTophamHat · 02/05/2021 19:20

I was a little big like this when pregnant. I'd be ravenous, then could barely finish half a plate. There was a reason for that though.

Assuming no other health issues I would just find it strange that you were routinely making portions that you couldn't finish. It just seems a bit wasteful really.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 02/05/2021 19:20

Mother of God at all of you "I can't eat it" - just serve yourself and serve yourself what you can eat.

Annabellerina · 02/05/2021 19:20

I have a small appetite and get full very quickly too. Now that I know myself and my eating habits better I have stopped trying to force myself to eat 3 square meals a day just because everyone else does. I eat as and when I'm hungry and I eat as much as I need to. Sometimes this ends up being 6 small meals a day, sometimes 2 bigger ones. All humans are not the same, and even we are not the same every day!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/05/2021 19:21

Also. Many people have no idea what "normal" portion looks like now. It's really skewed. I am sure mine are still bigger than what shpuld be "normal" so it's quite possible you have normal-ish appetite and just think large portion is normal. Or you have small appetite.

Either way it's weird to cook portions bigger than you know you can eat

Ellieboolou33 · 02/05/2021 19:23

If it's normal for you then that's fine, just don't expect a dinner invite from me 🤣

Viviennemary · 02/05/2021 19:23

Sounds more like somebody with an eating disorder. No it isn't usual.

How is it wasteful just because she eats it over a few hours and not a few minutes??

Why do you ask if YABU? who has said you are?

Yep.
QueenPaw · 02/05/2021 19:25

I would just plate up (a lot) less and go back for more if you want
Then you can keep leftovers in the fridge. I usually cook my standard type portion and if I'm hungrier then add more salad/veg/piece of bread or have yoghurt and fruit after

NeverTrustaRabbit · 02/05/2021 19:26

If, as a PP infers, you have a disordered relationship with alcohol, this can affect your appetite.

You need to be honest with yourself.....are you using these posts as a way of reaching out for help? Do you want help with your drinking and eating habits?

You acknowledge that your way of eating an evening meal is unusual. People have made suggestions such as serving a much smaller helping. Whatever you choose to do, set yourself a daily goal and take small steps to achieve it. So if you k ow you'll eat a sandwich have that for dinner but have something more substantial for lunch. If you have children, you need to sort this out otherwise you will be setting them up with bad eating/drinking habits

AlwaysLatte · 02/05/2021 19:26

I would find it a bit odd - either you end up sitting at the table when everyone has left or they have sit forever waiting for you. Could you have a very small meal then a grazing plate later on in the eve?

andymoan · 02/05/2021 19:27

@BestOption no ones said it but I just know it's a bit strange as for instance when eating with other people at their house it stresses me because I feel under pressure to finish it but I can barely manage half the portion and they always ask was everything ok? Same in restaurants it's awkward. Everyone can finish their plates and I can barely manage half. Whereas if I had that same plate at home as what was served in the restaurant I could finish it, but only over a few hours.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/05/2021 19:29

Omg, I do this.
Everyone thinks it odd, but I often just don't want to eat it all at once, I also don't mind cold food.

romany4 · 02/05/2021 19:30

I'm the same. I have IBS.
It usually takes me up to 45 minutes to eat a meal.
I eat really slowly

It’s really poor manners and must be so unpleasant for anyone you live with. I don’t know why you’re making such a fuss about this - either you’re truly worried so go to the GP or you’re boasting about disordered eating. Just serve yourself smaller portions and if this has been going on for more than a few weeks and this is a change for you, go to the GP.

andymoan · 02/05/2021 19:34

I live with my children who are in bed when I have my dinner most nights, not sure who it's bad manners to when I do the cooking @VanillaSpiceCandle

Chitaufree · 02/05/2021 19:34

I also do this

Howyoudoingirl · 02/05/2021 19:38

I can't see how this would have any effect on others in the house. Unless you Do it when you go out to eat?. If you're at home then crack on & eat how you like. One of the best things about being an adult is you get to choose when, what & how you eat. Happy grazing

FuckyouCovid21 · 02/05/2021 19:41

I'm just not understanding why you wouldn't serve yourself a smaller more manageable portion...surely that's the answer?

4PawsGood · 02/05/2021 19:41

Are you the same for other meals or is it just dinner? I’m just curious, not going anywhere with it. Smile

In definitely more of a small and often eater, but not to quite the same extent. I can see it’s more healthy for you to eat a bit more dinner later in the evening rather than snacking on shit.

andymoan · 02/05/2021 19:42

Yes when I'm with others or out for dinner I will eat what I can manage and leave the rest. I don't sit there for three hours trying to finish it.

OP posts:
andymoan · 02/05/2021 19:43

@4PawsGood just for dinner, can manage my lunch fine and most of time don't eat breakfast.

I’ve been told I eat like a sparrow since childhood, I’m 48 and still this way, I have had IBS for 25 years which doesn’t help but I have never been someone with a huge appetite, it’s always been a source of amusement to family and friends. I eat everything on a much smaller plate now which has really helped. It hasn’t affected my dc, they are 15 and 13. 15 year old ds eats like a horse. So don’t worry about it op, if you have always been this way and it’s not a new thing why give a toss what anyone else thinks, I don’t.

MegaBeach · 02/05/2021 19:49

If you’re all happy to chastise the OP for rudely picking at coooold food, would it more polite to guzzle it down like a hog at a trough?
