To think this is the wine?

Every second weekend when my son goes to his dads I have a bottle to a bottle and a half of white wine on the Friday night. I am always sleeping relatively early and then on Saturday I chill as I feel pretty tender. It's now Sunday night and I still feel really tired, down in the dumps, bloated etc. It happens every second week. Surely it can't just be a bottle of wine doing this? I don't drink the two weeks when he is with me and I am fine and very productive but I have literally lay on the sofa eating all day yesterday and today.

Yeah sounds like it must be? I couldn't handle a bottle and a half of wine esp if not drinking any other time

coodawoodashooda · 02/05/2021 17:04

I'd say it's the wine.

MissyB1 · 02/05/2021 17:05

That’s a lot to drink in one go. You are effectively binge drinking. I’m not surprised you feel rough.

Keepyourdistance000 · 02/05/2021 17:05

Try not having the wine one weekend - if you feel better, it's probably the wine.

Bluntness100 · 02/05/2021 17:05

Yup you’ve a hangover.Which is what happens when you down a bottle and a half of wine op.

hotpatooties1 · 02/05/2021 17:06

I'd say it's the wine. I get really down when I drank that much, then would feel even worse because I've spent a day or two doing nothing and eating shite. Wine gives me the worst hangover!

RickJames · 02/05/2021 17:07

A bottle and a half of wine is a lot - I drink about 3 bottles a week which is rather a lot but I wouldn't drink so much at once. Also red is much worse for me the next day than white. What are you drinking and how much food/ water are you consuming during drinking?

millenialblush · 02/05/2021 17:08

That's quite a lot of wine to drink in one night. My limit is 2 glasses before I feel shit the next day.

actiongirl1978 · 02/05/2021 17:08

When I lived on my own in my 20s I did this and felt the same.

Try and stop at 2 glasses. Then lots of water, early to bed and get up and be productive on the Saturday.

That's exactly it, I feel like I've just wasted my weekend lying about doing nothing and eating crap and I feel guilty for it.

Have you ever not done this? So you can look back and recall how you felt

Or better yet... don’t do it next weekend and see how you go

I drink white wine - on the Friday I had a spicy bean wrap and packet of crisps all day. Didn't drink any water whilst drinking either Blush

@Egghead81 yeah I took a 6 month break from drinking last year, just got fed up of feeling like shit but you easily forget the feeling after a few months. I just struggle to think a bottle of wine/bottle and a half can have a two day effect.

OP posts:
PlanDeRaccordement · 02/05/2021 17:13

Yes it’s the wine....and age. Guessing you are not in your 20s anymore so can no longer get away with binge drinking anymore.
1.5 bottles of wine in a single evening is a lot. NHS guidelines are to drink no more than 14 units per week preferably spread evenly over 3 days. So that means should stay under 5 units in a single evening. A bottle of wine is at least 9 units. A bottle and a half of wine means you drank at least 13.5 units....or more than twice what NHS guidelines recommend in a single sitting.

hotpatooties1 · 02/05/2021 17:15

@andymoan it can definitely leave you feeling low for a while. I used to get bad beer fear aswell, I figured it's just not worth it anymore 🤦🏼‍♀️

It would destroy me!

There’s no black and white
There’s your proof. You felt better. Give it up

Bluedeblue · 02/05/2021 17:18

I think it's cos you're not used to it. I can sink 2 bottles and get up at 6am with no hangover. Not great, I know!

ghostyslovesheets · 02/05/2021 17:20

at 51 I just can't drink lots any more without feeling pants - in fact a normal wild night out now leaves me puking - I stick to vodka and soda (water!) which helps but if I drank that much in one sitting I'd feel crap most of the weekend

Janaih · 02/05/2021 17:22

Classic hangxiety I'm afraid :(

Noirdesir · 02/05/2021 17:23

Of course it’s the wine- are you aware of the chemical processes alcohol puts your brain through? Alcohol is a depressant. It decreases the effects of anxiety/ and activity of the central nervous system. The problem is- your brain is always seeking equilibrium and balance so to counter effect this suppression of the central nervous system your brain cranks it up- far more than it would normally. This is all fine when you have a bottle of wine in you but what happens when your body has metabolised the alcohol? That’s right- your brain is left with an excess of stimulating chemicals which cause you to feel anxious, sad, paranoid, guilty restless yet tired at the same time and generally “off”.
Google the effects of alcohol on the brain if you don’t want to take my word for it. In terms of psychological health- alcohol damages it, just like it damages our physical body.

andymoan · 02/05/2021 17:23

Okay I need to lay off the wine then...

OP posts:
andymoan · 02/05/2021 17:24

@Janaih hangxiety even if I've not done anything anxiety inducing?

OP posts:
Mamamamasaurus · 02/05/2021 17:27

I've noticed that it's taking me longer to come round from a hangover, the older I get. I also find that I feel 'down' for a few days after too.

It's the wine.

HugeAckmansWife · 02/05/2021 17:31

Umm. Yes I'd say it is. A bottle and a half in one evening is a fair bit.. And I say that as someone who could drink that, I'm not a pearl clutching, thimble of sherry = alcoholic. Sounds like a fairly standard hangover to me.

Sciurus83 · 02/05/2021 17:32

It's definitely the wine. I've stopped drinking in lockdown because anything more than 2 glasses sent anxiety through the roof. It doesn't have to be related to an anxiety inducing event, it is a feeling and the depressive effects of drinking that much wine can induce anxiety alone. I live wine, she doesn't love me any more so we had to break up.
