To ask gym goers about their hair?

I need / want to go to the gym as much as I can. The problem is my hair!! It's thick and heavy and takes forever to wash and dry and style. I can't do this daily (wash it every other day) as I don't have the time but I do need to go to the gym daily which means I get sweaty smelly hair. I've tried dry hair shampoo and it's awful!!
What do people do in between when you can't wash it?

@Twilightstarbright

I try to coincide cardio workouts on hair wash day and weights on one day hair, then it gets tied up.
Came here to say exactly this. I try to wash it only twice a week. Monday weight training, tuesday tabata/cardio then wash hair, break on a weds, weight training thursday, wash Friday.

Just hairdry the sweat off after? I use Ouai dry shampoo - expensive but amazing!

Mellonsprite · 01/05/2021 19:54

I cut mine shorter and just wash it more (but font style it). I can’t stand the feeling of a sweaty scalp. Batiste is not good for my hair, no matter how little I use it always leave a white powder all over it.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 01/05/2021 20:01

This is the bane of my life, I have to wash my hair after a workout, I have no choice, the sweat goes from root to the ends of my hair, I would like to workout everyday but I am just sick of the hair situation , if I didn’t exercise I would only have to wash my hair 3 times a week maximum, and to make matters worse I don’t have the type of hair that you can leave to dry naturally either as it looks completely shit, so on top of the washing I have to blow dry and straighten my hair for it to look decent. Exercise is so much more than an hour in the gym, really wish short hair suited me, life would be so much easier.

AOwlAOwlAOwl · 01/05/2021 20:05

Get an undercut - it stops the back of your head getting sweaty and really cuts down on the sweat penetrating the rest of your hair. Mine mostly stays dry now except for some bits round the edge.

bigbluebus · 01/05/2021 20:08

I used to wash mine every time I exercised but now my hair is quite dry I just put it in a high pony tail when working out then rinse the sweat off my neck in the shower and maybe wash/wet my fringe. Then I blow dry the damp bits which only takes a couple of minutes. I only wash it properly twice a week now.

shouldistop · 01/05/2021 20:10

You can't put the dry shampoo on sweaty hair so blast your hair dry with a cold hairdryer then put the dry shampoo in.

Dozer · 01/05/2021 20:11

Wash daily and don’t dry or style it: health over beauty!

Dozer · 01/05/2021 20:11

(My personal choice)

CovidCorvid · 01/05/2021 20:12

I have thick hair nearly to my waist. Go to the gym most days and wash it every other day, or more if I’ve had a really sweaty session. I just have it up all the time, gym, work, day to day....always up. So no styling at all.

CovidCorvid · 01/05/2021 20:13

@Twilightstarbright

I try to coincide cardio workouts on hair wash day and weights on one day hair, then it gets tied up.
And yes I also alternate weights and cardio to help with the alternate hair washing days.
CuriousSeal · 01/05/2021 20:14

I had the same problem. In the end I just did 2 or 3 'bun' days in the week. So I'd just wash my hair and scrape it into a bun while it was still damp as it was more manageable wet. I'm on mat leave now and only get out for a run a couple of times a week. Problem solved 😂

Ednadidit · 01/05/2021 20:16

I know you said you’ve tried it but I use dry shampoo before heading into the gym, rather than after, so it’s sort of there to absorb the sweat as I’m working out. Seems to do the trick!

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 01/05/2021 20:17

If I use dry shampoo I put it on before bed, don't rub it in, sleep on it, then in the morning give it a quick brush to get rid of the residue. Dry shampoo needs a good amount of time to soak up oil. Probably doesn't help if you work out in the mornings though!

If I work out in the morning I tend to just wash and go. Washing my hair only adds 5 minutes onto a shower, then I leave it down while driving to work with the air vents on full blast and by the time I get there the roots are fairly dry, so I just pop in back in a ponytail or bun.

redcandlelight · 01/05/2021 20:17

I rinse my hair under the shower after a run and just put it in a pony tail.

FoxgloveBee · 01/05/2021 20:19

After high intensity exercise I always wash my (very thick) hair. However I don't use a hair drier and just let it dry naturally (it goes wavy unlike using a hairdryer where it's a frizz bomb). I used to have really long hair and now it's shoulder length - I use the same method regardless of length.

AllThatisSolid · 01/05/2021 20:36

I have waist length thick-ish straight hair. I train about 6 days a week - 2 of them very hard sessions, the ret lighter - My hair is in plaits or a bun (I hate having it flapping around on the back of my neck). I wash it after the heavy sessions & the rest of the time pull it back & up for work.

Covetthee · 01/05/2021 20:41

Dry shampoo the roots and blast with thehairdryer, makes it look freshly washed everytime!

bjjgirl · 01/05/2021 20:53

I workout twice a day but my hair always needs washing as it drips with sweat at the end of training, I wash it and just constantly have wet hair

Haudyourwheesht · 01/05/2021 22:36

I run in the morning before I shower so I don't have to do it twice. Lots of dry shampoo if I don't have time to wash it.

thenightsky · 01/05/2021 22:39

I just wash it with minimal shampoo and loads of conditioner. Then blast with the dryer and plait.

tecatea · 01/05/2021 22:59

My hair is long, thick & wavy & I always just let it dry naturally. Just tie it up for gym but my head doesn't sweat that much & I only wash every 2-3 days.

TaraR2020 · 01/05/2021 23:26

As another pp said, dry your hair using cold air from the hairdryer and then dry shampoo. I'm not a fan of baptiste, there are much better ones out there.

In a pinch I dust a little talc on my hands and ruffle them through the roots, I do this a few times and applying to hands first means you don't end up with grey patches.

You could also take a towel to towel dry your hair as soon as you hit the changing rooms, use a high absorbancy one (microfibre or tshirt).

sittingonacornflake · 02/05/2021 15:17

Tie it up to exercise. Body wash in the shower. Take it down and then dry my sweaty hair with my dyson air wrap. I know, I'm delightful.

StardewMelons · 03/05/2021 01:47

I have hair (just past my bra strap) thick. .. I would put my hair in a high ponytail, the twist that ponytail around on itself and make a tight bun with a 2nd bobble
