So, apparently the day your state pension is paid usually depends on the last two digits of your National Insurance number.

Between 00 and 19, Monday.
20-39 is Tuesday.
40-59 is Wednesday.
60 to 79 is Thursday.
80 - 99 is Friday.

AIBU to think most people (under pension age) did not know that?!

I'm Friday and DH is Wednesday Grin

But then why do all the pensioners come out to the post office to get their money one day a week then go shopping? I need answers

carolinesbaby · 30/04/2021 22:48

All Legacy benefits (JSA, income support and ESA) are paid like that too.
It's a fortnightly cycle based on the last two digits of your national insurance number. So the first week, the odd numbers are paid, the second week the event numbers.
So if your NINO ends 99A for example, you would be paid on the Friday of the first week in the cycle, if it ends 02B, you'd be paid the Monday of the second week.

CoRhona · 30/04/2021 23:29

I am nearly 50 and didn't know that and nor did DH! Looks like I will be paid on the last day of the last week though...

I'm with @Catswithflamingos....

I avoid both towns around me on a Thurs as its pension day, huge queues for the cashpoints and then head to all the various shops. Its the only time I see the towns busy in this covid era.

Twinkie01 · 30/04/2021 23:46

Thursday round here judging by the queue at the PO

Merryoldgoat · 30/04/2021 23:52

Do people still get their pension out in cash?! I assumed it was all electronic now!

Ohh! I didn't know this. Mine ends in 87 and my ESA is paid on a Friday.
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/05/2021 00:00

Mine ends 87 too!

RevolutionRadio · 01/05/2021 00:01

It was the same for JSA when I claimed it for a bit, I remember talking about it with the man in the job centre.

Mine is 93 and I was paid on a Tuesday.

I think they do it that way to make sure that all pensioners have got enough money to buy a packet of fresh crisps before Saturday. (If you are thinking What on earth is this idiot talking about, take a look at the Best Before date on the nearest packet of crisps, what day of the week is it?)

When i found that out i checked every packet in the house. Mind blown. Thanks for reminding me 😂
Peregrina · 01/05/2021 00:34

Well I checked DH's and my pension payments, and yes it does hold for us.

Slippy78 · 01/05/2021 00:42

The last digit of my NI number is a letter....

Mollymalone123 · 01/05/2021 00:48

My dad calls Thursday ‘shuffle day’ st the post office 😂

He says we all join the queue and shuffle along to the counter .

fairydustandpixies · 01/05/2021 00:48

Wow!!

Kentuki · 01/05/2021 00:49

Does it correspond to your birth day? Because I was born on a Thursday and my number means I would get it on a Thursday?

Kentuki · 01/05/2021 00:51

Also, my younger brother and I have almost identical NI numbers. Is there a family connection?

Autocreateusername123 · 01/05/2021 00:58

Even weirder, mine and DHs are almost identical. NI numbers are assigned at birth aren't they? and we were born 4 years apart in completely different areas.
Freecuthbert · 01/05/2021 01:04

People saying that one day of the week in particular seems to be pension day. I'm not sure how NI numbers are assigned, but could it be that most pensioners at the moment have NI numbers ending in the same number group? And people older or younger by so many years their NI number falls into a different group? I'm curious.

Freecuthbert · 01/05/2021 01:05

@Autocreateusername123 I'm sure when I saw my partner's NI card the number was quite similar to mine. He is one year older than me

StayingHere · 01/05/2021 12:37

@Kentuki

Me and my siblings too. For example the endings for my sister is 1X, my brother 2Y and me 3Z but the rest of the number the same. (These are faux numbers btw but that kind of pattern!)
CoRhona · 01/05/2021 16:57

@Kentuki oooh I was born on a Friday too so possibly that is true as well...

GrandTheftWalrus · 01/05/2021 18:42

I was born on a Thursday and my NI number meant I got my jsa on a Friday.

Pottedpalm · 01/05/2021 19:24

I always assumed Thursday was pension day. Certainly was growing up and now I qualify I get mine on a Thursday too.
