Nanny dilema

Chelsea2021 · 29/04/2021 19:17

I work as an after school nanny in Clapham. The boys I look after have started an after school club, which means I have nothing to do whilst they are there. (There is only so much tidying the playroom that can be done!) The boys mum wants me to stay an hour and a half later, as there is nothing for me to do whilst they are at the club. I have explained that I agreed to xxx hours, and I expect to finish at my usual time, and still be paid whilst the children are at the club, as I am willing to work, and it is not my fault if she has booked them an after school activity.

I further explained that after my usual finish time, I either go home to my own family, or babysit for other people, so staying later for her, prevents me from earning extra money, whether that be from her (if she needs me to babysit) or another family.

Am I being unreasonable?

What does it say in your contract about what your hours are?

EverdeRose · 29/04/2021 19:21

Its unfair for your workday to be extended by that amount of time for free.
As you've said she didn't have to put them in the club. Although I'd be worried about losing the job altogether or being told my hours were being cut and having to take a hit financially.

honeylulu · 29/04/2021 19:22

Is she proposing you stay the extra hours for no additional pay? If so she IBVU.

Angelica789 · 29/04/2021 19:22

No you should not make up the hours. You are there and available in case the children are ill or the club is cancelled, both of which can happen at the last minute. If she doesn’t want to pay you for this time then that is time you are not working.

AmandaHoldensLips · 29/04/2021 19:22

She's taking the piss.

Merryoldgoat · 29/04/2021 19:23

I have a childminder rather than a nanny but occasionally I pick up early, don’t send him etc. and expect to pay the same.

Shelby2010 · 29/04/2021 19:23

Do you collect them from school & take them to the club?

Sunshin388 · 29/04/2021 19:24

YANBU at all, she's taking the piss

PenguindreamsofDraco · 29/04/2021 19:25

I dont know why the location of the job is relevant and yet somehow it explains everything Grin
Of course YANBU

minipie · 29/04/2021 19:26

Obviously YANBU. She can’t just change your hours.

She can ask you to stay later and pay you extra for the extra time or she can ask you to keep the same number of hours and change to a later start time/later finish time for the same money. You can say no to this.

adagio · 29/04/2021 19:27

My nanny used to ferry the kids round activities after school - she still got paid the usual amount to sit around waiting for them/collect them if they happen take ill or need the ‘parent’ role. Still finish usual time. Any extension to normal hours negotiated as babysitting rates, and any time I had a day off or something it was a holiday for her at usual holiday pay allowance.
I miss my nanny so much! She was amazing. (Can’t justify it now we wfh and both kids are in school).

MrsSprogett · 29/04/2021 19:28

She's being very cheeky

mygee · 29/04/2021 19:28

She can ask you to stay later but she would have to pay you, and you don't have to agree to it! Unless of course it's in your contract but it doesn't sound that way.

Stichintime · 29/04/2021 19:29

Hope this mums not on mumsnet, you've been pretty outing.

eurochick · 29/04/2021 19:31

I'm a nanny employer. She's taking the piss.

RandomMess · 29/04/2021 19:31

If she expects you to work for free beyond your contracted hours then she is being ridiculous.

eatsleepread · 29/04/2021 19:32

You would be the one to have to pick them up from said club, if for example they were feeling unwell. So you should get paid for it and not have to work later.

Puntastic · 29/04/2021 19:36

YANBU.

JADS · 29/04/2021 19:37

No, that's ridiculous. I say that as a nanny employer. Good after school nannies are hard to find. I'm sure you could get another job.

Maryann1975 · 29/04/2021 19:40

she can ask you to change your hours/terms of employment, but you are allowed to say no. I guess then She is able to terminate the contract/make you redundant as the job role/hours have changed and you can’t accommodate them.
Do you take them to the club and are you on call if there’s an issue? If so, I think she is being extra cheeky!
I took a job as an after school nanny (When I was young and naive). The parents had an agreement with their previous nanny that if the child had an after school club, the hours would be banked to use during school holidays And I ended up owing hours back in the first couple of weeks. I only stayed for 6 weeks until I found something better. It doesn’t matter what you are doing after work, if you aren’t willing to change your hours, you don’t have to (as long as you are prepared to join the job hunt).

billy1966 · 29/04/2021 19:42

She is a CF.

I think you should keep an eye open for other positions.

@Stichintime

Hope this mums not on mumsnet, you've been pretty outing.
Indeed!
Pinkpaisley · 29/04/2021 19:48

You do not stay later!!

As kids get older, sometimes nanny positions evolve into household manager positions. If you are amenable, I would suggest that you use the down time to pick up some other duties. The most likely would starting dinner prep or doing laundry. You could also take over some of their errands. I would not agree to take on heavy cleaning because that typically pays at a higher rate.

Chelsea2021 · 29/04/2021 19:54

Thank you all for your comments. The club is at the boys school. I drive to the school and have to leave 40 mins to get there, park and wait for them to finish to take them home.

Their mum wants me to stay the extra hour and a half, for no extra pay, because she is paying me whilst they're at the club and I have nothing to do.

That's even more ridiculous reading the update
